Although the exterior styling may look familiar, Jaguar's historic sales leader, the XJ, has been completely redesigned for 2004.

Pros:
  • Supple ride quality, powerful V8 engines, roomier interior.
Cons:
  • Fussy interior controls, clumsy transmission shifter, CD changer is still in the trunk.

  • Gorgeous car; ugly repairs. - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

Bought this car in January of 2011 with 13k miles on it. Always wanted this model. I knew what I was getting myself into but was stubbornly optimistic. I wanted to believe Jag had improved their reliability over the years but was quickly disappointed. The performance is beyond reproach and I admit I am now spoiled with its power and plush interior. But by 20K, one of the shocks blew. By 30k, the air suspension compressor died. By 40k, another shock blew. By 45k, the car died mid-ride (thank God I wasnt on the freeway). The dreaded "engine systems fault" light illuminated. Dealer couldnt figure out the problem and it magically cured itself; promptly traded it for reliable Lexus.

  • 1 Week Into Jaguar Ownership - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

12k a 40k mile car was a steal. I purchased this car knowing something would break. You have to have that mindset for all Jaguars and plan accordingly. This car was below my budget for a used car, and I put my savings from the purchase into an account for future repairs. Im now very glad I did. 1 week in and the sunroof is broken, air suspension has visible leaks, who knows what else. Just the parts for the sunroof are $800, rear air suspension is $1500 for one shock. If you dont mind working on a car yourself (which I dont) this is a decent buy, also for air suspension issues arnott makes better than factory suspension. 4 shocks for the price of a jag one.

Bought XJ8 VDP used with 60000 reading on the odometer. Love the comfort speed and styling of this big cat but been disappointed with its quality. If you are the type that can fix little things on your own then this wouldn’t be a bad buy. The XJ has not left me stranded but have had little things go wrong. List of problem that I was able to fix myself: 1. All lock mechanism stopped working- found used parts on Ebay for 200 for all 4 doors. New price for each door is 300+. 2. Interior blower motor stop working- found control module on Ebay for 120. New part 300+ 3. Trunk latch stopped working- found trunk latch on Ebay for 50. New part 400+ 4. Radio amp stopped working- found used part on Ebay for 100. New part 1500+ Again, if you don’t have a personal mechanic or you are not able to turn a wrench do yourself a favor stay away…..

  • A real improvement - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

After owning a 99 XJ8 and an 01 XKR, I wanted a different brand of car for my wife. After test driving all models with a bias to NOT buy a Jaguar, I still bought the Jag. THIS CAR IS A VAST IMPROVMENT OVER PAST MODELS and I believe it to be currently the best car on the road. My one complaint is outside appearance. I liked the lower profile Jag. This is taller and more rounded but compensated with better cabin room. Performance is its strength as it is incredibly more responsive. Test this car and you wont be disappointed.

  • great car - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

If you like a big comfort type of ride the XJ Jag is top of the line. Its not as tight or quick as a Bemer, but not nearly as expensive and a whole lot better looking. Gas mileage sucks.

  • Another Jaguar - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

I replaced my 2001 S-Type 4.0 with the XJ8. When I drove it I couldnt believe the differences from the past XJs or even the S-Type. It is fast, smooth and handles incredibly well. In fact, believe it or not, you might even say it is too powerful. If its even a remote thought of a car choice, go drive it and see what you think. The only negatives rest with the brakes being too sensitive and a couple of rattles. It certainly doesnt have the style differentiation of the S-Type, but its a car I will be pleased to drive for three years.

Had it for one year (18,000 - 32,000 miles), solid & responsive car to drive, firm seats stand up to wear from 4th & 5th graders. Unexpected maintenance & problems as follows: 1. Complete failure of battery & remote entry system ($1,800); 2. Worn front tires, replaced all (28,000 miles, $600); 3. Complete brake job (28,000 miles, $800); 4. Car alarm goes off unprovoked at least twice weekly, still uncorrected; 5. Radio jumps to different band on its own; 6. Had minor wrinkle in front fender over wheel, didnt break the paint, est. to repair was $3,000 (aluminum unibody, I think), I had dent guy fix it for $200, looks ok.

  • Owned since new - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series

Ok, Ive owned my Jag since 2004 bought it new in Texas and drove it straight to Arizona. Ive had only a few issues with the big cat in the 8 years Ive had her. Electric issues with the A/C, and the cruise control. Thats all! Once fixed Ive had no other issues with them. My Jag has 58,375miles and is an awesome family car. My kids love the cool factor, my wife loves the way it drives and I love the safety features that it offers. Im not a Jag man but I do love owning it. I also own a 2001 Ferrari 360, 2009 GMC Sierra and a BMW M3. I take care of my rides so they can take care of me.

  • Drives Nicely But Unreliable and Shoddy - 2004 Jaguar XJ-Series
    By -

My 2004 XJR is a lovely car to drive, but it has the most atrocious reliability I have ever experienced. The car has numerous malfunctions and flaws and Jaguar customer service is unconcerned and callous. This car has been in the shop for every problem imagineable. This has been a horrible experience with respect to service and reliability

The performance of this car is incredible. It feels like a Porsche on steroids! It rides very smoothly and handles like a dream, withouth being harsh or jumpy. I dont like the ignition key, I keep blowing the horn when putting it away. The interior is finally the right size and I like the fact that they did not go overboard with the electronic gadgets.
