This Year's Model Updates:

The S-Type gets minor styling revisions in the form of smaller taillights, a tighter-looking deck lid and a restyled front fascia. New exterior panels have tighter fits, while the hood is now made of aluminum. Interior upgrades include new Bronze Madrona trim, a revised instrument panel and an optional aluminum trim package. Eight-cylinder models get a new VDP package that adds premium heated leather seats, burled walnut trim and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

Pros:
  • Elegantly appointed interiors, solid all-around performance, classic British styling, full load of standard safety equipment.
Cons:
  • A few cheap interior bits, high price, fussy J-gate shifter.

  • Good But Could Be Better - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

I used to drive traditional 2-seat convertible sports cars. Now as a grown-up I buy 4-door sedans that have potential to be fun to drive, such as a turbo-charged Audi and a 5-series BMW. The 2005 S-type 4.2 beats those in terms of visual appeal and perceived poshness, but not in actual comfort or roominess and certainly not in handling. Smooth cruising, yes. Handling, no. The reliability is barely good enough to keep me semi-satisfied. Same for the amount of interioor rattling. Unless the 2008 S-type handles much better better, I am not going to be seduced by the sexy spy photos, and when my lease ends, I am going to switch.

  • Performance for those with patience - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

Fast, luxurious, comfortable, and very easy to handle. However, 25 months after I bought it new, during which it was in the shop for warranty work for 38 days, I had to trade it for a car I could depend on. When it runs, it is wonderful. However, everything negative about Jaguars reliability came true. I would only recommend this car to someone who has money, patience, and lives very close to a Jaguar dealer.

  • Triumph of engineering. - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

Designed for those who have enough experience with cars to appreciate all that it offers. Holds the road like glue. Power is more than enough for todays driving. Very comfortable for 2 people. City gas mileage is around 12 to 13 mpg. Highway 21 to 22 mpg. at around 90 mph with a lot of downshifting to pass. No problems of any kind so far. Feels like what it is, a luxury sports sedan, no matter where you drive it. Sound system is as good as I have heard in any car, regardless of price if you set it up right. This car is for the young at heart who like to experience excitement when they drive. One test drive will validate what I just said. Top value for the money. Highly recommended.

  • Nice car, would recommend - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

Great car, fun to drive. Horrible in snow, the worst Ive ever driven. straight line power is great. Stereo system is pathetic for a 60k car. Why they went with Alpine over bose is anyones guess. Bluetooth technology would have been nice. But the looks, ride, the navigation (which is absolutely top notch), are all great features in a car that can certainly hold its own against most sports cars these days in a off the line duel.

  • Jaguar s-type R - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

The Jaguar S-Type R is a very interesting car. Its dynamics and its engineering are very fun and solid. It is an extremely stable and fast car. The exterior styling keeps in line with a fast sleek interesting cat. It is the epitimy of high performance luxury European cars.

  • If you need 4 doors and speed - wow! - 2005 Jaguar S-Type
    By -

I had been missing my fast cars after purchasing a 2001 E320 MBZ, but I needed the room of a sedan. This car with its racing suspension, brakes and supercharged engine is definitely it! I beat our 96 Porsche 911 off the starting line. It is so responsive and quick and does not hesitate when down shifting the automatic. In corners you can feel it completely set down and hug the road - no fishtailing here. Its a sports car in a sedan body style.

  • Disappointed - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

I bought this car b/c Ive always wanted an S type...had the pre-purchase inspection, & all they had to say was it would need upper ball joints in the near future. But the price seemed right, so I bought it. A week later, the battery was dead, then every week after, the battery would die, faithfully. Come to find out, it has a parasitic drain that wasnt disclosed to us & I guess this is a huge problem with these cars. My husband traced it out, & its the GECM. Im disappointed that Jaguar produces such beautiful cars with such ridiculous flaws. I love this car, but hate this car. Other than that, its been great, but I wouldnt buy another Jag.

  • used 05 s - 2005 Jaguar S-Type

Bought the car used 15k miles, former rental car. Very smooth and refined ride, plenty of power. Beautiful interior. So far after 2 months no problem. good car to buy used, significant depreciation. (although significantly more depreciation to come)

  • The big cat, built to cruise, sips gas - 2005 Jaguar S-Type
    By -

30 mpg at 60 mph no a/c. Tires were gone at 50K. Dealer says wear on inside is design so it will handle well, no way to correct. Small leak in coolant system, dealer has tried to correct 3 times, no avail. Passenger window has mind of its own, sometimes wont go up fully, pain in the rain. Dealer has tried to correct twice. Think it will stick this time. Driver seat puts my skinny backside (6, 140#) to sleep after 2 hours, not as comfortable as my Dodge Ram seats, but very smooth quiet ride. Extended warranty has saved my billfold bigtime.
