This Year's Model Updates:

After receiving significant upgrades last year, the Sonata receives only minor changes this year. Among these are a battery-saver feature (in the event that any of lights are left on); illuminated window switches; a 12-volt power point in the trunk; and electronic, rather than cable-operated, releases for the trunk lid and fuel door. Additionally, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup in previous years, so the Sonata's four-cylinder is now rated at 138 horsepower (down from 149) and its V6 is rated at 170 (down from 181), though the engines themselves are unchanged.

Pros:
  • Excellent warranty, stylish sheet metal, pleasant highway ride, lots of bang for your family-sedan buck.
Cons:
  • Noisy four-cylinder engine, some cheap interior bits.

  • Great value for the money! - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

I have driven this car since September and there are just a couple things that I am not happy with: Miles per gallon- The sticker idicated 19 City/27 Hwy and I have barely averaged 20 MPG on mostly highway trips the car now has 7,500 miles I took it to the dealer after 1,000 miles was averaging 12.8 MPG. The automatic transmission lags on emergency acceleration - I will have the dealer check it at the next service. The 4 speed transmission is adequate in city traffic, but should have overdrive for higher speeds.

Overall I think Hyundai builds a very nice automobile. For the first year of ownership there were a few minor things that had to be fixed, but nothing major. The major complaint I have is comfort of the front seats. It is not comfortable. I have a 4 cylinder car and it has ample pep and drive even on the highway.I would recommend thia auto to anyone. This car came well equipped as standard equipment and a great warranty.

  • Surprised - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

I couldnt be more surprised at the comfort, styling, and reliability of this car. IF all that doesnt get to you then the warranty should. I feel smarter than everyone else because I have so much for so little. The only crime is not buying this car because youre afraid of the name.

  • More than impressed - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Very happy so far. Bought 03 GLS in Jan w/Pkg 5(moonroof,ABS,Trac Ctrl). Didnt want roof, but wanted TC, so took pkg 5. Very comfortable quiet ride, stereo good (not great), performance good, V6 plenty powerful (not as much as Hond/Toy, but better than their 4cyl and still less $), Shiftronic is fun (and contrary to some opinions, useful). My 1st month got ok gas mileage (20 mpg) in mixed (60% hwy/40% city) driving. Now avg 24 mpg. Best was a 600mi trip in Apr. that netted a very respectable 28 mpg avg (~ 80% hwy/20% city).

We bought the 2003 Sonata LX w/ the "homelink" feature. The "homelink" is a very nice feature. It lets you open your garage door by pressing one of three button on the rear view mirror. It can operate three different doors as well. It comes with the automatic dimmer feature, so at night the mirror cuts down on the glare from the car behind you. Very impresed with the warranty. Probably the biggest selling point of the car. DEFINATELY go for the V-6 over the V-4.(standard the LX)

  • So far, so good! - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Purchased a new 2003 Sonata w/the V6 upgrade and 4AT (no other options). Its great! Interior could use some minor adjustments - like seat comfort - the drivers side certainly doesnt "cradle" you (spoiled by my old Chevy Lumina!) The speaker sound quality is not the best - a little muddy. But overall, a GREAT deal! We were out the door at $15,806 (including a 1000 rebate). Mike and crew at Fitzgerald Auto Mall were upfront and very accommodating. More than I can say for some of the other dealers we visited before buying there.

I love the standard features that are included with purchase.

  • How did I do? - 2003 Hyundai Sonata

2003 Hyundai Sonata Base Model with the V6 Auto upgrade with the moonroof. I think the Edmunds TMC pricing is a bit low, though. Kelleys and NADA prices show the price as higher. Dealer invoice was $16360 for this car. I managed to get it for $16,100 without the rebate. I chose the special financing, instead. Im surely no expert at buying a new car and wonder how the experts here may think I did on the price? $16,100 out the door (no taxes because I will title it in my state).3 or 4 dealers in my entire state; they wont deal; bought car in adjoining state. So far, 2 days, I love the car & the ride. Thanks for any input.

they lied about the horsepower. The blower switch for the fan broke. Rides nice and smooth. Good highway mpg. Good Brakes. Overall this car is great for the price, stylish and looks just as good as a jaguar.
