This Year's Model Updates:

Air conditioning becomes standard equipment on GS and GL models. Otherwise, Hyundai's bargain-basement car soldiers on to 2002 with no changes in store.

Pros:
  • Smooth ride, low price, impressive powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Unrefined demeanor, lack of standard equipment and amenities.

  • At least they are cheap. - 2002 Hyundai Accent

Pros: Cheap. Lots of interior space and head room. Good on gas. Actually did well in a freeway accident with a dump-truck. Cons: Very small and poor breaks (never balanced properly between front a rear causing rear breaks to lock up way before the fronts) Really scary in slippery conditions. poor handling (both body roll, and the suspension wore out quickly). Transmission (manual) would clunk or grind into gears between 1st and 2nd gear. Water leak into trunk which was found under warranty but they failed to fix it twice. Then the warranty expired and they said that I would have to pay for it. They did end up fixing it for free, but not without a fight.

  • Cheap for a reason - 2002 Hyundai Accent

Basics: No standard features. Cheaply built. Poor visual sight when driving. No back seat room. No front seat room. Low head clearence. No power in the engine. Rattle noises when I accelerate. Cheap feel. No pride in owning one. I can only hope when people see the "H" they think it is a Honda. Cheap price for a Cheap car. Not recomended unless you cannot afford anything else. If you want a Hatchback get a VW Golf, like I will be in 2 months.

  • Wish Id shopped around more - 2002 Hyundai Accent

What a disappointment! I bought this car brand new with only a few miles on it from the test drive. In August 2008, Id have owned the car for 6 years and have only put about 48,000 miles on it. As of last week, it sits dead in front of my house. One year after purchase, the Power Relay went (covered by warranty) in 2006 the engine was really loud, turned out to have a hole in the exhaust and needed to replace some sensors over the next several months- more than once! Had to replace the e-brake and have work done on other brakes in 8/06 as well. By 7/08, need e-brake again, check engine light on, timing belt broke while driving and wrecked the engine. Cheaper to buy another than fix this!

  • More than I could afford - 2002 Hyundai Accent

Got car used w/11k miles on it, have had nothing but problems with it.I dont know how many sensors this thing had but I think I have replaced them all. Also, transmission went at 77k mi after I brought it in several times for the same problem (over a couple of yrs), either that or the dealership got tired of trying to fix it, it was not covered by the warranty. Horrible to drive in the snow, its like rubbing crisco on the tires then driving in the snow. I spent more time getting it fixed and money on this car (seemed to be something every 3 months)than what it was worth. Traded it in w/the check engine, brake & battery lights on got $1400 for it, though I would have paid them to take it.

  • Dont buy hyundai - 2002 Hyundai Accent

I have had this car for about half a year and am not pleased at all. Ride quality is poor along with power, and looks. I figured that hey! It was alot cheaper than other cars but I dont like it. Sure the warrenty is good but who wants to have a good warrenty with a poor car? I dont. I will never use a better price for an excuse to buy a car again!

  • Unreliable - 2002 Hyundai Accent

Bought used, dont do that! 65K warranty used for transmission at 32K. Out of warranty transmission replaced at 82K. Owned 3 years with 6 breakdowns requiring towing. I have never had this much trouble with any other car. Rapid loss of value. Intermittent poor shifting even after dealer service. I cant recommend this car in any way.

The clutch needs to be replaced with only 19,500 miles

  • Be forwarned - 2002 Hyundai Accent

I bought this car because I needed reliable transportation with a low cost. The warranty was what suckered me in. The check engine light came on at 400mi. and has stayed on. I now have 28,000mi. Ive taken it in to be looked at, and the dealership cant seem to figure out what is wrong. My dealership tried to charge me to look at the car. I had to call Hyundai to get a refund, and I still have the problem. Mechanically, otherwise, it has been fine...I have yet to be left stranded. I do plan to replace this car with another Toyota in a few months. I was hoping for similar quality, but sadly mistaken.
