This Year's Model Updates:

The Odyssey gains an intermittent rear window wiper this year, as well as an auto up-and-down driver-side window.

Pros:
  • Excellent crash test scores, huge interior, fold-flat third-row seat, powerful V6, optional navigation and entertainment system.
Cons:
  • Quality of some interior materials could be better, high demand limits negotiating possibilities.

  • Bottom Line on the Ody - 2003 Honda Odyssey

Researched extensively then bought 02 model in late 01. Overrated. Left us stranded twice. Problems with American Honda honoring warranty. Good fuel mpg, smooth engine, fold down seat, but...big wind noise, transmission hunts excessively (reliability issues are real) controls not backlit, sliding doors slow and unreliable, shifter has unnatural throw-hits wiper stalk, drivers seat uncomfortable for long rides, front Power point located on floor difficult to use with no auto- off, fuel sloshes in tank excessively, re-sale not as advertised-

  • A little disappointed - 2003 Honda Odyssey

I had trouble with the tranny but they fixed it, but when backing up then putting on the breaks, I hear a lot of clatter. ??? The idle revs a lot so into the shop it goes. (twice now) The light on the clock went out so that means drop the van off at the dealer for one full day, again. The check engine light is annoying and I hate to have to put the van in park to open the side doors. Milage is horrible but I like the large vehicle so thats the price you pay. I probably wont buy Honda again because of the hassle in the repairs. After the 36,000 mile warrenty, I almost have to purchase the extension. Cant wait for that expense!

  • Theyre better out there (Chrysler) - 2003 Honda Odyssey
    By -

The Honda is totally outclassed in luxury, road noise, smooth ride. The Chrysler is much better is these regards. Hondas interior is plain stark compared to its competition. Features that Honda has going for it are a 5 speed tranny and the fold-away third seat. But Id rather have a full sized spare, personally. Chrysler stands behind their powertrain. Honda does not (3-36 is the worst in the industry). Sorry Honda, the Chrysler wins big time here. Ive owned 4 minivans and I cant sacrifice plain interiors and lousy ride for a supposed reliability advantage that Honda themselves wont back up.

left dealer lot and got on highway, van shakes at 60mph,so much for pre delivery inspection.seat heater marginal at best, radio controls in steering wheel and window switches on doors are not back lite at night.have to fumble around to use.also seat heater switches are in terrible location and do not cycle off with key each time used.acc power plug on front dash in terible location on floor.first time import car owner was told honda is #1,well i guess they still have a lot of homework to do on the odyessy. not worth the money for level of trim and features.

  • Our Odyssey Journey - 2003 Honda Odyssey

We were on the market for a minivan (replace 97 Mercury Villager) in 2003, and set to Odyssey since Sienna was redesigned and hot (months of waiting just like Odyssey few months ago). We got good price on the LX ($300 below invoice). The first month the van was back to dealership twice for both front struts. Few months later, the AC was broken, then the clock light. Last month, the engine speed went up and down (between 2000 to 4000) while idling. The dealer replaced the idle control unit. The rear brakes always make noise, but the dealer says it is normal. We now have 23k m on the van, it has been in shop SEVEN(7) times. We have never had any problem with our Toyotas and the Villager.

  • Doesnt live up to Honda quality - 2003 Honda Odyssey

Traded in a Dodge Minvan and wish I hadnt. Found that this vehicle is very noisy. Unhappy with transmission dropping the gear due to recalled problem. Have gotten no help from several dealerships that dont think I know what Im talking about and since theyve installed the Honda "fix" they say that there isnt a problem. Husband drives a Pilot - thats very nice. Will be trading in soon (and cant wait). Will never buy and Odyssey again.

  • Looking for a transmission? - 2003 Honda Odyssey
    By -

I would never recommend this vehicle to anyone. Ive already gone through one transmission (less than 1000 miles!!). Seems like this is a standard problem with the Honda. It got all these great reviews and suckered me into buying. Stick with Toyota or Kia if you want a minivan.

Its just a Honda thats it. Sliding door, transmission problems are some of the flaws.

  • Learning the hard way - 2003 Honda Odyssey

Our transmission died at 26,000 miles. We were also told that we would not be provided a loaner or rental car because that is not HONDA policy. It was over two weeks before we got our van back because transmissions are back ordered. Honda has extended over 1.2 million transmission warranties in the past couple of years. Why dont they just recall the transmissions? Oh yeah, then edmunds would not keep them as an editors choice.
