  • Long Time Owner - 1998 GMC Suburban

Bought vehicle in 11/97, and have driven over 297,000 miles. Original transmission lasted 207,000. Have replaced just about everything (except engine) several times. Worst experience involved the fuel pump... after replacing 3 times in 12 months, discovered the fuel harness underneath vehicle had a nick (from a rock?), and when it bumped metal it would burn the pump up. Needless to say, our family of 5 have loved the Suburban, and would definitely purchase another.

We are orignal owners and have had used this machine to safely and comfortably transport our daughters volleyball and basketball team mates to many competitions. Its been across the country and back, has taken us skiing. The 4WD has been helpful when rains make our dirt roads slippery. Over the 219K miles it has logged, two radiators were replaced and as many mufflers. Its been well maintained, has the original engine and transmission (heads have never been off) and is still going strong.

Good solid truck for the most part. Two issues in the last 57,000 miles, first it lost the 2-3 clutch pack in the transmission at 121,000 but the previous owner had done a lot of towing. Second I lost a fuel pump at 154,000 miles but that was my own fault for not changing the fuel filter as often as required (filter was pluged). It took me longer to drain the tank than it did to replace the pump, which cost $110. I have a 32 travel trailer and 4 kids and overall this has been a good vehicle. Mileage is poor, but there is a limit to what you can expect from a 5300 pound box.

  • If you need one, buy one - 1999 GMC Suburban

Overall these are solid dependable vehicles, this is our 3rd one. We had a 1978 and a 1982. If you buy one with around 90k, expect to do about $3500 in maintenance, as a handful of expensive repairs will be needed between 90k and 120k. I bought mine with about 135k and all those things had been done at the dealership.

  • The Ultimate Hauler - 1992 GMC Suburban
    By -

Love everything about my 1992 Suburban except putting gas in it. I purchased this truck because I work for a parrot and wild bird rescue on weekends and needed the room. So far, there hasnt been anything I cant fit in it...people, large cages...Ive had it through some trails on our property that our 4x4 Kaboda has trouble with and have yet to be pulled out. Absolutly no reliability issues as of yet...I prefer this engine to the newer Vortec engine with the troublesome intakes. If you dont mind $130.00 fill-ups, its the ultimate hauler!

My 92 Suburban was in my family, a family member gave it to me. It was pretty well taken care of except for the fact he barely drove it, so some rust accumilated. It has the great 5.7 liter, which isnt too good on gas. Also, the 42 gallon tank is very unforgiving. Ill put in $40 in gas, and the needle barely moves, but whatever it is really fun to drive. My exhaust was falling off so I put in a performance LMC truck dual ehaust system, which sounds great, and was only $20 more than a stock style system. I also put in a new stereo, and speakers because the one it came with didnt work. If you take care of this truck, it will work great.

I originally bought a 2wd 88 Suburban for house projects and hauling. I found that this vehicle is actually fun to drive. I looked for the last model year for the best features and settled on this 91 GMC Suburban. The former owner took very good care of it. I love this truck. With the second row folded down, there is almost nothing that I cant haul.

  • 7 years of great service - 1998 GMC Suburban

We bought our 98 Burb in 2000 w/59000 miles, getting out of a poor quality Chrysler minivan. We knew what to expect as far as gas mileage but didnt as far as reliability. After countless trips back and forth to soccer games, school, 2000 mile vacations, this Burbhas never stranded us on the road and has only been in the shop twice for repair work- intake gasket and fuel pump. The only reason were selling it is because one of my children is getting ready to drive, so were downsizing. Except for the 14 mpg around town, this Burb has been as dependable as any Toyota or Honda!

  • Solid SUV - 1998 GMC Suburban

I purchased this vehicle with 114000 miles six months ago. Ive needed to patch the A/C lines and replace two U joints. Other than that, the Suburban has been solid. Great on long trips, comfortable, MPG runs 13-14 city and 15-16 hwy. Usable cargo space is excellent with the third row seats out, and I can pack 8 people in when all the seats are installed. Good substitute for a full sized pickup if you dont want to sacrifice seating space. The Suburbans tend to run a couple of thousand dollars less than comparable pickups on the used market as well. If youre buying a Suburban with over 90,000 miles, look for one that has already had the transmission rebuilt.

  • Strong Over Time - 1990 GMC Suburban

A bulletproof machine that was perfected near the end of its design run. Well mannered and still capable 16 years after I bought it. Suprisingly easy to park. Worlds apart from the passenger vehicles GM was dumping on us back then. Only advice- keep your all your engine gasket seals fresh or they will shrink and leak.
