This Year's Model Updates:

The Freestyle is an all-new crossover wagon from Ford. Built on a Volvo platform, it incorporates the Swedish brand's safety and all-wheel-drive technology, while offering six- to seven-passenger seating capacity.

Pros:
  • Truly roomy seating for six passengers, plenty of cargo space, balanced ride and handling characteristics, lengthy list of safety features.
Cons:
  • So-so acceleration, some low-grade interior materials, no stability control or navigation system.

  • Finally got rid of it! - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Start with the positive - it never broke down, ever. We loved the space allotment and flexibility inside and some of the small touches (keypad entry, lots of storage even with the third row seat in use). But the materials inside were total junk. We had the cloth upholstry and even water left a nasty stain. They really could do better. Under the hood there was way too much electrical tape. Finally, the fuel economy wasnt near what was promised and over 3 years Ford never figured out how to improve it. Lots of highway noise, crappy, staticy radio.

  • Never buying a Ford again. - 2005 Ford Freestyle

When I purchased this thing, I soon realized why Ford is in such a financial slump. People are getting wise and not buying Fords anymore, I unfortunately was one of the few unwise and bought one. After only 15k, a new transmission was needed which Ford had the nerve to blame the failure on me. I had to take them to court the get it fixed under warranty! 5k after that the fuel pump went, leaving me and my family stranded on the side of the road during a trip (Ford refused to pay for the tow) Later my headlights would not turn on, only highbeams worked, which got me a ticket for driving with highbeams on. After 30k, I needed another new fuel pump, washer fluid pump, CD player stopped working.

This car is driven in Germany, so immediately its at a major disadvantage. Its clearly designed for American roads, where Im sure its capable and probably very comfortable. However, on European roads its lacking in acceleration, feels like a tank, doesnt fit into parking spots and feels generally out of its element. It cant keep up with cars that have half as much power on the autobahn, and makes a miserable racket trying. The engine drone under acceleration gets annoying fast. Ours is driven harder than probably any other Freestyle on the road, but it lets us know that it doesnt like it. Minor issues fixed under warranty include brake lights that stayed on and outside temp gauge.

  • Pretty Freestyle - 2005 Ford Freestyle

The Freestyle is a beautiful SUV I purchased the Limited AWD, but it is not very durable. With just 38,000 everything started to break. Ive had cars with over 100,000 miles and nothing broke. The car just was not designed well, especially not for families!

  • Freestyle Problems - 2005 Ford Freestyle

Would own more Freestyles if it were for the interior. The exterior maintainance problems are terrible. Needed new tires at 11,500 miles, and now again at 23,000. Also needs new back brakes now. Also needs new windshield because its scratched by current windshield wipers.

  • Im trading it in for a Honda/Acura - 2005 Ford Freestyle
    By -

Ive owned this for less than two years and Im negotiating a trade-in for an Acura MDX. This car is a great idea, but poorly designed/engineered. Some of my issues include: Seatbelts that constantly tangle (Ive had it into the dealer numerous times), rear brakes that were worn out at 20k miles (dealers were notified about issues, but NOT consumers!), various electrical issues, and a dealer/manufacturer that doesnt stand behind their products. Im tired of the dealers telling me that "its a design issue that were aware of, but Ford is not doing anything about it." Rather than fix the problem, they charge me to repair it!

  • Am I the only one with a problem? - 2005 Ford Freestyle
    By -

The Ford Freestyle has given me nothing but grief beginning 2 weeks after the purchase of my car. I have already had the transmission and electrical wiring replaced within 1 month of the purchase of my vehicle. The car doors dont shut properly, many time the car wont start, or will shut off when placed in gear shortly after start up. Car constantly hesitates. Grinding noises when I cut the wheel.

  • A step down - 2005 Ford Freestyle

We downsized from a Expedition and with four kids we really have not felt an impact. We go on the normal weekend getaways and the only noticeable difference is the gas savings.

We traded in an Excursion for it. Hard to give a 100% unbiased review. I miss my Excursion; this just doesnt compare (I know it isnt apples to apples) but I wish I hadnt made the trade.

  • Many areas for improvement. - 2005 Ford Freestyle

It handles well, is roomy and attractive in appearance. Lacks the quality I am used to in other Ford vehicles I have owned.
