This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control that was previously available on V8 models only is now available on all models, except the XLS and XLS Sport and all AWD models. The NBX version now comes standard with the off-road package and "NBX" tailgate badging, and can be ordered with a moonroof. Limited and Eddie Bauer models get a quad bucket seating option when equipped with the third-row bench, which adds second-row buckets and a floor console. Family buyers of the 2004 Ford Explorer should note that the optional rear air conditioner no longer requires the purchase of the third-row seat. Finally, a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLS Sport and higher trim levels, and a rear cargo shade is optional on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.

Pros:
  • Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout and seating for up to seven, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Dull cabin design with some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, lousy fuel economy.

  • Love my Explorer! - 2004 Ford Explorer

I purchased my Explorer brand new from the dealership. I was contacted for minimal recalls that did not affect the driving performance. The only problem I ever had was a problem with my back window not wanting to roll up or down. It was out of warranty so I had to pay to fix it. During the warranty period I even had my stearing wheel changed because it started to show some worn spots. I think some of the people who complain about cars dont know how to take care of them. If you change your oil and fluids regulary you shouldnt have many problems.

I own two Explorers. The 96 (used) I loved and subsequently bought used 04. So far on the 04 I have had to relace the hood (pitted and rusting) Tranmission problem corrected under recall Differential and air conditioning just after warranty expired even though the problems were showing before but problems could not be found? I will likely buy Honda or Toyota next purchase

  • Great- But Drinks Gas! - 2004 Ford Explorer

I love this car. Its great for a family of 4. Its very roomy, and has a large storage area in the back. Only 2 bad things is that it drinks gas and I wish I could lock my hatchback opener on the keyless entry pad. Sometimes going down the road, touch it and it flys open..

Overall, I love this vehicle and would purchase it again. There are a few comfort items that could be adjusted.

  • Starting to have small issues - 2004 Ford Explorer

Still drives like new at 63000 miles however had to have the water pump replaced and right after pulling out from the dealer about a week later my engine light went on they claimed it would cost $700 for the repairs but the SUV still ran great! Um I wonder after complaining and basicly stopping short of accusing them for this, I dropped it off at the dealer and after picking it up the light now goes off after starting the vehicle! Ummmm I wonder if I was not mechanically inclined person I would of paid the $700?

My Explorer is a great family car. I have the third seat and its quite roomy I would recommend this car the only downfall is it is a gas guzzler (since Ive owned the truck gas prices have doubled). The other problem I have is the seat belts they dont fully retract all the time. I would highly recommend this car its wonderful in the snow and its very easy to drive.

We brought this new 2004 SUV Sport in white with trim, and let me tell you we are very satisfied. 4.0, 6 cyl. It retailed at $35,000 and walked off the dealership just paying $25,000. (We brought it on New Years Day of 2005) Seats 7. Not a lot of room in the back for groceries but you can get by. Our two toddlers sit in the 2nd row. Ford has put a lot of value into this SUV. We checked other SUVs and they were way too expensive. Ford safety record on this vehicle rated high according to the NHSTA. Not the greatest on gas, but with it being NEW the gas is going B+. The oil filter is easy to get to. I recommend you get it with the Leather seats. Leather seats are the best to buy. My wife loves it!

I bought my Explorer used with 15,000 miles on it. Its a pearl white limited. Its truly the best looking vehicle on the road. Ive had a few problems with it(paint chipped, transmission needed to be rebuilt, seals leaked and rocker arms needed to be replaced) However, my husband and I relate it to the fact that it sat, undriven, for an extended period of time. Ive owned many different types of vehicles (Chevy, Honda, Chrysler) but I always go back to Ford. Ive had problems with the autos but, overall, theyre the best value for the money.

  • Monochrome Black Rocketship Eddie Bauer - 2004 Ford Explorer

Great Truck, great V-8 economy. Its fun to drive, sounds great roaring up to speed, and hits 60 in just about 8 seconds. Factory tires began to dry-rot after 3 years and 35k miles, replaced with Michelins, averaging 18.5 mpg. I wish RSC was available prior to the 05 model. I wish we had rear a/c in the AZ summers. I love the factory sound system in the Eddie Bauer. Im glad I didnt pop for the 4x4. Friend with an 05 4.0 4x4 is only averaging 15 mpg.
