This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control that was previously available on V8 models only is now available on all models, except the XLS and XLS Sport and all AWD models. The NBX version now comes standard with the off-road package and "NBX" tailgate badging, and can be ordered with a moonroof. Limited and Eddie Bauer models get a quad bucket seating option when equipped with the third-row bench, which adds second-row buckets and a floor console. Family buyers of the 2004 Ford Explorer should note that the optional rear air conditioner no longer requires the purchase of the third-row seat. Finally, a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLS Sport and higher trim levels, and a rear cargo shade is optional on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.

Pros:
  • Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout and seating for up to seven, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Dull cabin design with some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, lousy fuel economy.

  • Excellent Value - Great Car! - 2004 Ford Explorer

Currenty w/ 1500 Miles on the SUV (V8), the truck gets two thumbs up. IT was a great value ($42000 list) that ended up costing $32,000 + Tax. The ride, siz, and power are all great. The only bad thing I have to say about the truck is the Gas Milage is terrible (10 MPG City/13 Highway).

  • Made a great decision! - 2004 Ford Explorer

I love this vehicle. The reliability is great! I get 19 mpg overall and consider that decent for the type of vehicle I am driving. I tow a boat with no problem at all. The ride is complementary and the overall service this vehicle provides makes it a pleasure to own. I did have a transmission recall but that was taken care of immediately and the service dept was quite respectful. The ride is comfortable, the vehicle is easy to drive and control in inclement weather and (With Caution) I feel very safe on the road. I made a great purchasing decision and plan to keep this SUV for some time to come. I would not hesitate to buy another in the future.

Great SUV so far - 47000 miles and still going, I still have the original tires with more miles to go. No problems since day 1.

By far the best riding & handling SUV.....& the cheapest SUV to insure.

Very comfortable, pleasing to the eye, V-6 has more than adequate power for driving and passing, have not had a trailer behind it yet. Third row seat a must for family vehicle. Audio system has very "professional" sound.

  • Gas Hog, but fun! - 2004 Ford Explorer

Had a 2002 with a V6...no pickup whatsoever...but it got 20-22 mpg on the highway. The V8 has lots of pep, but 16mpg highway...

  • Eddie Bauer Explorer - 2004 Ford Explorer

The Eddie Bauer is definetely worth the extra money. Traded in an XLT, loved it, but this one is awesome with all the extras.

  • My First SUV - 2004 Ford Explorer

I am now used to sitting higher. This is a great vehicle. I have 3600 miles on it and no complaints. I have been able to haul things that I couldnt with my car. I am averaging 20mpg.

  • Nice, but not my bag. - 2004 Ford Explorer
    By -

I rented on for a week long trip. It was what I expected in an American SUV. Bland exterior and interior, underpowered engine, but it its defence. It did swalow all my cargo and make it from Orlando to Key West on one tank of gas. For my 30K Ide look to an Audi Wagon or an Infinity FX 35/45

  • Bad Transmission - 2004 Ford Explorer
    By -

My explorer is 3 years old and has 48K miles. The transmission went out - totally. The cab is cramped, there is little leg room for a 5"10" man, and your feet freeze on the passenger side. There is too much engine noise on the passenger side. The gas mileage is poor. Did I mention the transmission burnt up - totally ruined? From now on I am sticking with reliable ole GMC!
