Overview & Reviews
The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.
- Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
- Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

Great family car! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By TomS - May 13 - 10:00 amWe bought this car a week before our twins arrived. We needed room for 3 young children and our 99 Volvo XC had no good 3rd row option(Volvo only offers a rear-facing 3rd row seat). The EB Explorer we bought is loaded (V8, 4WD, 3rd row seat, side airbags, reverse sensing system, auxilary climate control) and cost about $34K. It handles well, doesnt ride like a truck, has great power, tons of room, and has gotten excellent safety ratings. A comparably equipped Benz M30 wouldve cost me $44K. The Acura MDX has a tiny 3rd row seat and a 6- month waiting list. If youre outgrowing a wagon or a smaller SUV, I highly recommend the Explorer.

totally diggin it - 2002 Ford Explorer
By quartertone - May 7 - 10:00 amThis SUV handles great compared with most everything we ever test drove. The seats in the xlt are the way to go. Way more comfortable than XLS. Very happy with performance of the V6 with no reportable problems. Really enjoy all amenities and so many that are standard. Will recommend to anyone who is interested in a vehicle of this type.

Ford Explorer - 2002 Ford Explorer
By elrehs - March 17 - 5:53 amVery powerful V8 engine. Excellent high quality interior, excellent handling. Wanted a real SUV, but a smooth ride so purchased Ford Explorer instead of Toyota Highlander. Thought Toyota Sequoia is too over-priced! Still love Toyota, but Ford Explorer gives Toyota SUVs a run for their money.....

buy it! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By ricohmon - September 12 - 10:00 amI am very pleased with the performance, ride, and quality of this vehicle. The cargo space is a huge plus against other SUVs in its class. The turning radius and handling are superb for an SUV. Adequate power and acceleration. Make sure you add the Sport Package for added comfort and design.

I LOVE my truck! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Queen - September 1 - 10:00 amI bought my 2002 Explorer XLT in January of this year (03). I have had nothing but pleasure out of it ever since. I love to drive it but it could get better mileage.

The best selling SUV for a reason - 2002 Ford Explorer
By defiant254 - August 24 - 10:00 amThis vehicle is wonderful. The V8 has a lot of power for a vehicle the size of an Explorer.. Could get better gas mileage.. The interior trim is much nicer than previous EB models. The ride is spectacular.. The new suspension is all that I read about and more.. Havnt taken it offroad yet, but Im looking forward to it..

2002 Explorer Pros/Cons - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Wayne - May 30 - 2:00 amFord did a great job on the 2002 Explorer Limited. I made a mistake and ordered it without the running boards. It is difficult for shorter people to get in and out of. The other poor feature is the seats. The lumbar support is wimpy. When I sat in it at the dealership, I believed the lumbar support to be adequate, however after driving it on a long car trip Ford should have increased the amount of lumbar support. Other than these two minor items, it is a great vehicle with no defects of any kind.

evaluation of 02 explorer - 2002 Ford Explorer
By barbara a kreuzer - April 19 - 2:00 amI love this car. I feel safe and I have confidence that it will get me through the back roads to work. I like the seat controls for the driver, intermitent wipers, climate control and all the cargo space. The third seat is a real nice feature. The pick-up is great and it holds the road fine when next to passing trucks.

lovin it - 2002 Ford Explorer
By cardio75 - April 17 - 2:00 amPurchased a new 2002 explorer and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Since it now has a 3rd row seat, i was able to use this as my family car and avoid the minivan club. no problems or regrets at 750 miles.
