This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

  • A Fun to Drive and Satisfying Ride - 2002 Ford Explorer

I have owned my Explorer for almost two years now and I absolutely love to drive it! My Explorer has the 4.6 liter V-8 and I would definitely say that it is powerful as well as useful for passing slow cars. Some of the reasons why I bought my Explorer were that I liked the plush leather interior, the two tone paint oxford white (body) and silver (trim), and the premium sound system that included a subwoofer. I am very satisfied with my Ford Explorer and would recommend it to anyone looking to buy a midsize SUV.

I just purchased my 5th Ford Explorer, I now am the proud owner of a 2002 Eddie Bauer edition Explorer. The Quality is exactly what I expect from FORD and again I am not dissapointed, The redesign of the vehicle is beautiful and the ride leaves me without words. I have not had to bring any of my vehicles in to Ford for any major reasons and do not expect to see any problems with this one either.

I just bought it and cant believe all the negative feedback here. I think it is an excellent car and an excellent value. I love driving it and think that Ford has done an excellent job with the 2002.

Traded 2007 Mustang GT for a 2002 Ford Explorer. I live in Kansas so I need a SUV for the snow! I am really amazed by the Eddie Bauer 4x4!

One of the deciding factors when choosing this car was the 3rd back seat. Although it does not offer a lot of leg room and requires a bit of climbing to get into, it is perfect for kids. The kids can easily climb in the back and the adults can sit in the rear seat confortably. This vehicle has proven to be very reliable. I have experienced a couple of hiccups thoough, in the past 27 months or so. I had to replace a switch for the passenger side window (it fell in the door), the a/c adaptor plugs arent working but I have not fixed yet, things like this. But nothing major.

I really like this vehicle. Its very comfortable, has good power, and is sharp to look at. I had a problem with the transmission shifting "hard", but took it in for a look and they replaced some parts and it runs fine. I would recommend this vehicle as the best bang for your buck as far as size and usefullness go among its competitors.

  • BEST EXPLORER IVE HAD - 2002 Ford Explorer
    By -

THIS IS MY 3RD EXPLORER SINCE 1990, AND ITS THE BEST. THE RIDE, THE QUALITY, THE WHOLE PACKAGE IS SO IMPROVED. BEFORE I BOUGHT MY EXPLORER, I CHECKED OUT THE CHEVY TRAILBLAZER. AFTER THE TEST RIDE AND CHECKING OVER THE VEHICLE, I RAN BACK TO FORD AND ORDERED MY EDDIE BAUER, WITH THE V-8. IM VERY PLEASED THAT I DID. THE TRAILBLAZER WAS SMALLER AND JUST DIDNT HAVE THE QUALITY OF THE EXPLORER. IF YOU ARE AN OWNER OF AN OLDER EXPLORER, TAKE THE TIME AND CHECK THE NEW ONE OUT.

  • Solid SUV - 2002 Ford Explorer

Has a nice ride with decent acceleration for an SUV. Good interior space - the third row seat is a nice feature although it doesnt fold completely flat which is a little annoying. Is a good tow vehicle and has been reliable.

  • Great Value - 2002 Ford Explorer

Weve had our 2002 Explorer 4x4 with the 4.6l V8 for a bit over two years and almost 40,000 miles. It has wonderful steering, is very stable under all conditions, is totally reliable, and very quiet. The truck is easy to drive with a very small turning circle. Two years on I still love this car.

This is my 3rd Explorer and "what a difference"!! My previous two were trouble free; however, this 2002 is a "GEM" to drive. Recently had to drive in a torrential rainstorm & this Explorer handled extremely well. Looking forward to taking some trips in this newly redesigned Explorer, as I know Im going to throughly enjo them
