This Year's Model Updates:

The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.

Pros:
  • Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
Cons:
  • Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

we leased a 2002 xlt in june 01. had it in the shop 7 times thru december. finally got dealership to call ford rep & auth exchange of collateral. we have now had this one since dec 01 & it has been much better than the 1st one, but i am still not happy with the quality of this suv. for a $30,000 vehicle, i thought i was getting something & then to see the resale value plumit on top of it all. i am considering a honda on the next go-round. no more fords.

WE have owned this vehicle, with many problems. I noticed that the rear differential was not right from the start, but the dealership told us everything was fine each service. This is a known problem with this model year and warranty coverage is questionable. There are other problems known to Ford with this model and unknown to the consumer! We have 50K miles on it; 4 years old and now they surface after numerous complaints. I am not happy and will NEVER buy Ford again!

I just walked outside last night to find my back hatch cracked in half by the Ford symbol. This is apparently an often occurrence with this model, but Ford will not pay to fix it even though I have the Premium Care Plan. Im on my fourth transmission now (at 56,000 miles) and I forgot to add that the six CD changer broke right after I bought this SUV brand new. Its a pretty, comfortable, fun, lemon of an SUV. Hope others have had better luck because I will never buy a Ford SUV again.

Foggy windows every time it rains (very poor climate control). Third row seat means a sloped cargo floor. Heavy items fall out to the ground when you open the liftgate - watch your feet! No separate fog light switch - you cant use fog lights when using the auto lamp feature. Auto lamps only stay on for 20 sec after vehicle is shut off. Heated seats turn off after 10 minutes. Cheap plastics used throughout interior. Screeching noise from instrument cluster area. Ford is still scratching their head over that one.

Explorer has a weak V-6. The vehicle is unreliable. I have had numerous problems with the drivetrain, the transmission, and the rear end. I cannot trust this vehicle. On top of that it gets poor gas mileage.

I had a 98 Explorer that gave me nothing but heartaches the engine repeatedly stalled. I bought the all new 2002 Explorer and was immediatly impressed on how trouble free it was until I hit 19000 miles. I was driving down a road As the light was turning red I took my foot off the accelerator and at that point the truck accelerated and I was standing on the brake pedal and the vehicle would not stop. I missed another vehicle the explorer did a 360 and I finally could reach the ignition to shut it off. Ford told me the problem was a KINKED accelerator Cable and this is the first time that this has ever happened with this model.

Replaced transmission at 67,000 miles which cost $3,000 at Ford. There were several electrical problems that cost several hundred dollars out of warranty. Spend the extra money and get a foreign made SUV. You will save in the end.

  • Quality is NOT #1 - 2002 Ford Explorer

I have owned mine for almost 3yrs and have had many probs. w/it. They tried fixing the a/c five times before they replaced the entire system. Now I have a rattling noise under the hood and its taken 3 trips to the dealership and it is still not fixed. The seats are horrible in the rear AND front, no comfort what so ever! Storage space is great and good sized SUV. The back window opens up if you dont want to lift the entire rear door, but I have a crack in the plastic that covers the rear window. Some times the rear window requires more force to shut it and it will take 2 or 3 times to close it before it finally closes.

Rear passenger ball joint went at 40,000 miles. 4WD module went at 15,000 miles. Transmission went at 79,000 miles. Gear shifter snapped off column at 79,500 miles. Automatic Idle Control went at 81,000 miles. Power windows sometimes work, sometimes not. Keyless entry key pad works sometimes, not always.

  • Never Again - 2002 Ford Explorer

I thought this would be a great vehicle. Instead, we have had it in the shop at least 10 times. I am on the 4th transmission and it to is going. The back panel has broken numerous times, the dealership has to replace it several times when I take it in because they cant get it on without it cracking. The black paint around the doors is peeling - I was told that isnt covered in the paint warranty that we bought! The ignition had to be replaced twice because it wouldnt turn. We have had to replace numerous other parts on this vehicle. What I had hoped is to have a great vehicle for years - instead Im stuck with a lemon.
