Overview & Reviews
The 2002 Ford Explorer has been overhauled in an attempt to make it more carlike than ever before. Among the improvements are a 2.5-inch-wider stance and 2-inch-longer wheelbase for improved handling and roominess, a new independent rear suspension that improves ride and handling, while at the same time accommodating an optional third row of seats, larger door openings with a lower step-in height, an optional side curtain airbag system and an optional Reverse Sensing System.
- Available third-row seating, independent rear suspension, powerful engines, attractive new exterior design.
- Everyone and his uncle has one, driving characteristics are still pretty truck-like.

Built Ford....Doh ! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By MLR - January 23 - 1:26 amVaried intermittent problems pointing to poor quality. Radio turns on with no key in ignition. Rear defrost bars in middle of window dont work. Interior is cheap. Plastic around window controls separates from door. Leather is more like pleathor. Brakes/backing plates made with cheap metal. Rusts easily. 4 wheel drive in to be repaired. Replaced transmission at 44,000 miles. Car has had two recalls. blah blah blah blah blah. Maybe I got the only bad one.

Prepare to spend on repairs - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Kevin - November 15 - 3:07 pmNothing but a money pit to keep rolling down the road. Purcahsed it with 19000 miles and have spent way too much to keep it running. Most problems are major expenses. Major drive train problems $$$$.

Big Ol Lemon - 2002 Ford Explorer
By michigander - November 4 - 10:00 amBought the 02 XLT used and within a month started to experience serious problems. Dealer (Scott McNamara) indicated it went through a detailed inspection. Have replaced both rear wheel bearings, front left wheel bearing. On a long road trip experienced loud noises and two independed dealers found problems with front and rear stabalizer bars, front and rear control arms, serious leak from oil pan and others, car was not drivable. Our cost would have been a total of $3000, over two months. Dealer did not back up this vehicle so we dumped it. Will never buy another Ford product. Quality is not job one with them.

Not So Reliable - 2002 Ford Explorer
By mnmatches - October 23 - 10:00 am- 5 trips to the dealership because of faulty ABS parts. - Flakey transmission (it sometimes does not pull into neutral when stopping and nearly kills the engine) - Good inital braking ability but VERY poor lifespan for roters (second pair in as many years of ownership)

Problems - 2002 Ford Explorer
By William Mitchell - March 10 - 10:00 amSince I brought this vechicle, I had to replace the transmission twice (It needs replacing again), I had to replace the struts and brushing twice (It needs replacing again). I only put around 20 somthing thousand miles on it since I had, and it has been the worst vehicle I had ever brought.

Buy a chevy !!! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By nick from nj - August 6 - 1:36 pmI thought I was the only person with transmission problems. The dealer acts that way !! Has been back 3 times for trans slamming and shuddering, still not fixed !! I am glad I purchased the extended warranty, even with 0 % financing you can not keep up with depreciation so you can trade them in. I will bite the bullet and lose money so I can trade it in before warranty runs out.

Worst New car that Ive owned - 2002 Ford Explorer
By gmack - August 2 - 2:00 amThe car has spent almost as much time in the shop as it has spent in my garage I have the 4.6L V8 which in my opinion is a POS. The motor knocks and ticks and Ford is refusing to fix it.

Stay Away - 2002 Ford Explorer
By Tim - June 22 - 5:30 pmI purchased this vehicle and have had a lot of issues. Pieces of plastic keep falling off the car in different places. The seal around the doors falls off and leaks. I also had problems with both the CD player and the speaker system. Do not buy the extended warranty it is a joke. I was sold an extended warranty on a vehicle that was 5 years old and had over 40,000 miles and was later told that the warranty expired after one year. The dealership told me I was covered up to 100,000 miles, but it was completely untrue. Also, there is a deductible for everything.

listen to the consumer!!! - 2002 Ford Explorer
By exploderdriver - May 4 - 10:00 amThis vehicle has had numerous problems similar to those mentioned throuhout these consumer reveiws (transmission, rear-end noise, back glass, etc...) Obviously these are common problems; however, Ford or any of their dealerships will admit to any of them, or try to fix them correctly. A few recalls would solve a lot of problems! By the way...if you live in Knoxville, TN....stay away from Lance Cunningham Ford, and Ted Russell Ford! Their service depts. are the pits!!!
