Overview & Reviews
Ford's AdvanceTrac electronic stability control that was previously available on V8 models only is now available on all models, except the XLS and XLS Sport and all AWD models. The NBX version now comes standard with the off-road package and "NBX" tailgate badging, and can be ordered with a moonroof. Limited and Eddie Bauer models get a quad bucket seating option when equipped with the third-row bench, which adds second-row buckets and a floor console. Family buyers of the 2004 Ford Explorer should note that the optional rear air conditioner no longer requires the purchase of the third-row seat. Finally, a tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard on XLS Sport and higher trim levels, and a rear cargo shade is optional on XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited models.
- Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout and seating for up to seven, good crash test scores.
- Dull cabin design with some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on highline models, lousy fuel economy.

Hate! - 2004 Ford Explorer
By David Willams - November 7 - 10:00 amI bought my peace of junk in January. I always had Hondas my whole life. My last Honda lasted 1991-2004 with one problem with it after its first 120,000 miles. I had 202,000 miles on my Honda when it died. This Ford handles terrobly. Get a Honda or a Toyota not a Ford or a Chrysler.

Numbert 3 - 2004 Ford Explorer
By George Holly - October 7 - 2:00 amThis is the third Ford Explorer that we have purchased from the same dealer. The only real complaint is the difficulty in finding the safety belt on the drivers side. It is a perfect vehicle for our use in Upstate NY.

Poor Quality - 2004 Ford Explorer
By Poor Quality - October 1 - 2:00 amI have two New Ford Suvs both with stall issues. Engine shakes a little ruff at times. No more Ford vehicles for me. I do not recommend. Ford should seek help from Honda or Toyota.

Just Right - 2004 Ford Explorer
By Lee D. - September 2 - 6:33 pmThis is just right for most SUV buyers. Overall quality vs cost makes it a good value. Started looking at the Escapes, went up to the Explorer because of the interior noise and less space. Then went to the XLT for the moon roof. Then added the 3rd row seating. Spent a little more, but think its worth it. Look forwar to the 4WD this winter.

A Great SUV - 2004 Ford Explorer
By VLP - August 14 - 10:00 amUnlike those car-based SUVs that are nothing more than glorified station wagons the Explorer combines real truck capabilities (such as off-road and towing) with luxury sedan comforts.

Rear Axle Problem - 2004 Ford Explorer
By Jsapie - June 27 - 10:00 amPurchased this used last week. Heard a whine in the rear end. Took it to the Ford dealer and they are replacing the entire rear end. They told me that a few have come back due to this problem.. Gas mileage is 15 in the city and 20 on the highway. Engine is very quiet. Sometime you need to listen to see if it is running. I think the BF goodrich tires make the ride rough due to the tread design. The front rotors needed turned due to a vibration in the steering wheel between 40 - 6o mph. Purchase a Ford ESP extended warranty over the web from a Ford dealer for a better price. With all the equipment on this I think you will need it!

XLS - Nice - 2004 Ford Explorer
By orrink - May 26 - 2:00 amMuch nicer than expected. I got it for under $17k. Ride is much better than expected. Nothing like my 1999 Sport. Very good radio/CD and very very roomy. Unreal VALUE is the name of this game.
