This Year's Model Updates:

A six-speed SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) transmission is now optional on select 3 Series models, while a five-speed Steptronic automatic is now offered with the 330i Performance Package. Rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and hands-free wireless cell phone capability are now standard features on the sedan and wagon. There are new alloy wheel designs for the 325i, 325xi and 330xi Sport Package. All 330i sedans get a revised grille -- a new black grille instead of silver, with a lower grille combination of body color and black. All 3 Series coupes and convertibles receive a revised front fascia, plus new front and rear bumper contours, Adaptive headlamps and taillights and new designs for both the standard and optional wheels. Interior changes are limited to a revised climate control panel. Finally, Sirius Satellite Radio is now available as an accessory on all 3 Series models.

Pros:
  • Available all-wheel drive for sedan and wagon.
  • Luxurious, powerful, exceptional road manners
Cons:
  • Pricey for its market segment, limited rear-seat space and cargo capacity.

  • I wanted to love this car. - 2004 BMW 3-Series

My first BMW was a 1987 325e and it ran perfect for 280,000 miles other than normal maintenance. At 280k the coil burned out, I put a new one in and 2 weeks later and the same thing happened. I tried one more time and the same problem so I sold it DOA. I bought a 2004 BMW 330Xi with 59,000 miles on it. My car now has 99,000 miles on it and here are all of the items I replaced. Complete CCV cold weather kit, Crankcase Vent Valve, Oil Separator Hose, Breather Hose. Valve cover gasket, valve cover, power steering pump, spark plugs and coil pack, rear springs, cv joints, DISA, multiple alignments because of pulling, brakes, and now it has mustard color under the oil cap.

  • Looks Great, but looks can be deceiving. - 2004 BMW 3-Series

I purchased this car used with 60k on it. At first it drove wonderfully. Then old age set in. After 25k miles, it started to break down. It seems like all the things in the engine that broke down, were plastic. Water pump, coolant reservoir, etc..... Not cheap to fix. Power steering pump went out quick and every mechanic, including BMW Mechanics, knew this was a major problem. $750 just to fix the pump. I decided it was time to part ways when I needed to make a 2k mile trip and I found out I had an oil leak, the window motor went out and the ac blower motor was going out. These are great cars if youre Bill Gates, but Im not. So I bought a Charger.

The drivers set is cramped. The ride is poor. The reliability is poor. I have had it in the shop twice in the last two months with problems. German engineering is no longer the best. I plan to trade it as soon as possible and look for a Japanese engineered and designed car.

  • Its Okay - 2004 BMW 3-Series

Cool car to drive because its BMW. Like the radio with the RDS and steering controls. The Seats suck. they are so uncomfortable.. no cushion just hard leather. Dont like it at all. Rain sensor does not always work that great. steptronic pointless. Too much money for a car with hardly no options. I have replaced all 4 tires within 6 mos. the slighest hard bump will make the tire blow and the rim bend

  • Nice, but not well built - 2004 BMW 3-Series

Fun to drive when its willing to work. Many trips to dealership. All problems were fixed at free of cost. but what will happen after warranty expires? Ill be doomed... power window failed twice. Trunk opens on its own(dealer thoght I was crazy but later they found the problem and fixed)small but annoying rattle coming from the dash board. Brake pad squeaks but dealer says its supposed to do that.. auto headlight is on day and night. if you really want a BMW then go for it.. but dont buy it. lease it.

  • Steptronic recall is a must - 2004 BMW 3-Series

New 325Ci, steptronic loaded. Less than 2,000 miles car hesitates on acceleration. The car revs wildly then slowly lurches forward. Dealer and BMW of NA played DUMB. I produced documentation found on message boards. A safety bulletin SIB 2407 03. BMW tells dealers to "replace the transmission on a customer complaint basis only"? Not how makers of "The Ultimate Driving Machine" should treat customers. NHTSA defect investigation underway as of Feb 04. I have lost all confidence in my dealer and BMW for not contacting me.

  • UDM no - be careful selecting a dealer - 2004 BMW 3-Series

Its always being a dream of mine to own a BMW. I guess the moral of the story is be careful what you wish for... it might come true. It is a nice car to drive, good handling, performance is somewhat lacking with the manual transmission, but Ive brought it back to the shop almost every month since it was 3months old with one problem or another. Tulley BMW of Nashua are terrible, guess their a known problem in BMW circles. BMW have put me in touch with another dealer who hopefully resolve the problems you wouldnt expect in a car that costs this much.

  • DONT CRY--DONT TELL - 2004 BMW 3-Series

I BOUGHT THE 2004 325CI WITH 16 MILES ON IT 3 WEEKS AGO. 2WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE THE TRANSMISSION BEGINS MALFUNCTIONING BETWEEN REVERSE AND DRIVE.I AM TOLD BY THE SALESMAN THAT THE CAR IS A CAR THAT NEEDS TO WARMED BEFORE DRIVING. I DECIDE TO TAKE IT IN FOR SERVICE AND I COME TO FIND THAT THERE IS A SILENT RECALL ON THE TRANSMISSION. I AM GIVEN DOCUMENTS STATING , FROM BMW, THAT IF A CUSTOMER COMPLAINS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION FAILING BETWEEN PARK AND DRIVE HE OR SHE IS A CANDIDATE FOR A UPGRADE REPLACEMENT. OTHERWISE IF THE CUSTOMER DOES NOT COMPLAIN DO NOT SAY A THING

  • Stalling out problem & other problems - 2004 BMW 3-Series
    By -

Ever since I purchased my 2004 330CI 6 speed manual, I was the service shop almost every week during the first 3 months of ownership. I had speaker rattle noises coming from the passenger door. Insulation between the speaker and door panel fixed it. Equiped with BMW 18" rims that constantly pulled to the right. BMW ended up replacing 1 tire and tweeked alignment to improve it. Worst problem encountered was the sporadic stalling problem when car was at an idle at a stop light. Engine would just cut out. BMW claims it is a software problem and no current fix at this time and had to temporarily increase my idle speed by 50. I got rid of this car!!
