This Year's Model Updates:

Volvo's 850 wagon gets a new name, new nose, body-color trim, stronger side-impact protection, more powerful turbo engines, redesigned interior and revised suspension. All-wheel-drive versions arrive to battle luxury SUVs.

Pros:
  • Front and side airbags. Excellent side-impact protection. Superb seats. Solid construction. More cargo volume than many sport-utilities. Available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Oddly placed controls. No all-speed traction control system available.

My wife wants a volvo wagon, so Ive been testing them for two weeks. Leather separates from door panels, bulbs burn out, suspension and brakes wear fast, check engine warnings are common. She wants it, its our 10th anniversary, and I cant buy it. Sucks~!

other than being in the shop every ten minutes, the cross country is a great car. if you got the wallet and dont mind loaner cars. the cross country is your car. you will get to know the service techs real well, and they are even less reliable than the car. consistently horrific service that is hard to beat. stay away from european cars. japanese is the way to go. lexus, honda, toyota all better in the long run.

  • tiny pieces of plastic killed the car! - 1998 Volvo V70

Overall, we put 80,000 miles on a used 1998 Volvo, driving about 100 miles away. There was a lot that was good and reliable about the car. But, you know those tiny plastic clips that hold all the interior trim pieces together? In six months we seemed to lose at least one a week. Inside of the back hatch fell off....trim piece above the drivers knees.... the plastic covering the switch for the power windows.... Then the gasket around the door, and the rubber strips on the roof rack... UGH.

  • Good car, but some parts are non durable - 1998 Volvo V70

This wagon has been very useful and never let me down on the road. I have driven this wagon to different long distance journey and it treated me well. However for a 12 year car with 142,000 miles, I do expect some wear and tear, but for some reason the most critical part of this wagon went out which was the passenger door lock where I couldnt get it to lock and could not get the rear cargo door to lock in its place and I had to get it repaired otherwise there is possible internal theft. Both front driver and passenger door hinges had to be replaced because they broke of old age which was costly. There are a few more minor wear and tear items that went out.

I bought my Volvo V70 as a minivan alternative - with the 3rd seat option it can seat 7. Its wonderful. Its a luxury car with a great sound system, powerful brakes and sits so smoothly on the road that I wonder how Ill ever be able to drive a cheap car again. Best of all, I know that my family is safe.

Purchased used V70 GLT Wagon with 60k miles and I have had nothing but problems. Car even came with all service records. Great to drive, very comfortable and lots of space. BUT car was in the shop FIVE times over an eight month period and I have paid almost $7k in repairs. I am in the process of selling. Volvo (sorry.....Ford) needs to make a more reilable car.

I bought this car new in 1998 for almost $40000 including a third row seat, taxes etc. Im about to trade it in for $5000 (if Im lucky). The repairs that this car has needed are incredible - leaks from everywhere, shot turbocharger, A/C, broker power locks, busted ABS, "Check Engine" light on constantly, failed inspection multiple times, burns lights, brakes and tires very quickly. The car is luxurious and rides well, and handles excellently in bad weather. However, given all the problems, I would never buy a volvo again.

  • Worth every penny - 1998 Volvo V70

Worth every penny I paid for it. As for lowered rating for reliability (9), its due to the window that got stuck and was replaced (for free - it was still under warranty) with the motor, guides, and everything that goes with it. No other problem whatsoever.
