This Year's Model Updates:

The Volvo V70 has been redesigned for 2001. Major changes include a new body structure, fresh styling, a revised interior and upgraded feature content. Safety figures prominently with the new V70 (as usual), but it is also more sporting than before, especially in T5 trim.

Pros:
  • Superb comfort, plenty of safety equipment, solid construction and amazing braking ability.
Cons:
  • High price, odd control placement.

  • Better Than Average - 2001 Volvo V70

Special ordered thru Diplomat Sales program with 5-Spd MANUAL transmission and cloth interior. Over the last 10 years, Ive replaced only brake pads/rotors, timing belt and one emission component. Obviously having a manual transmission, spared me the universal problems associated with auto transmissions, but the car has been very dependable by any measure. Other than brakes and rotors that I replaced myself, total repairs by dealers and/or privite shops since 2001 total less than $1,000.

This car has ruined our brand loyalty to Volvo (having previously owned and been very happy with an 84 DL wagon, an 84 GL sedan, an 88 740 wagon, a 93 850 sedan, and a 97 850R sedan), and as a result we probably will not be buying another. We have already spent well over 5K replacing items that should never need replacing (the radiator, 4 or 5 control modules, etc.), and now we are facing a 5K transmission replacement at 94K miles. The dealer is sympatheic, as is Volvo of America, but is otherwise totally unresponsive. Its a shame, but its time for us to explore another brand.

  • V70 T5- Not a Bad Car - 2001 Volvo V70

Bought new in 2001 through Volvos Diplomat Sales as special order with cloth interior (vice leather) and 5- Speed MANUAL transmission. Car has been very reliable and aside from usual wear items such as pads and rotors, have not spent more than $1K over last 10 years for repairs that included replacement of a pollution device plus new timing and serpentine belts. Perhaps having the manual transmission thats made the difference, but has been dependable and decent on gas. Would not buy another Volvo because Ford pretty much destroyed the company. Current Volvos are just too expensive for what one gets. Current models offer old technology.

  • Love/hate relationship - 2001 Volvo V70

I bought this car with the intention of keeping it for a long time. With 64,000 mi. this car is the most unreliable (by far) vehicle Ive ever owned! I spent nearly $2000 at 60,000 mi. for service and repairs and 3000 mi. later the service light is on again. I am on the third main computer module (thankfully under warranty), ABS module ($1000), the throttle module left me stranded hundreds of miles from home. Ive replaced a wheel bearing, power steering problems and countless light bulbs repeatedly. Easily over $2000 in repairs alone, not including tires, brakes, regular maintenance, etc. Great when it works, but can no longer trust it! Will be replaced soon, not Volvo.

  • Frustrated! - 2001 Volvo V70

I used to love this car, despite the squishy transmission that my husband has complained about since day one. Then, last week, the o-ring failed causing the car to lose all power steering fluid. I had to have it towed the dealer for repair. Yesterday I had to replace all 4 rotors and brake pads at 48,000. The brake pads were originally replaced around 25,000. They assure me that this is typical?! I thought it was unbelievable. Ive had many of the other problems reported by others, slipping transmission, service light appearing for no apparent reason, etc., but the brakes are my last straw. This is my 2nd and last Volvo!

  • Volvo dropped the ball on the V70 series - 2001 Volvo V70

My family and I have driven Volvos for most of our lives, from the old 240s up to todays V70s. I have to say that (arguably) though looks have improved, quality control has not. Sure my V70 looks top notch, but Ive had multiple issues with the car from the brakes to the ETM to the suspension. All of these problems are not cheap to fix, ranging from $700-1200 a visit. It seems that Volvo dropped the ball on their 2001 line of V70s, and theyre not considering any recalls. Youll find many owners having the same problems: ETM gives out while driving at highway speeds, the clunk felt when starting up from a stopped position, the brake rotors needing replacement every 20K miles, etc.

  • My First and Last Volvo - 2001 Volvo V70

When I was looking for a car, I had four criteria: safety, reliability, longevity, and environmental impact. Volvo rated well in all categories. This car has been nothing but a disappointment and money pit. Just a short list of previous problems: throttle module, fan, fuel system. Now, the heating is out and the transmission needs to be replaced, to the tune of $5K. I cant tell you how disappointed I am. The car was great to drive for the first two years, and then it seemed to fall apart in spite of being well cared for. I resent Volvo. (Thanks, Ford.) By contrast, my 2002 VW has more miles on it and has required no repairs, just maintenance. Its VW for me from now on.

  • Transmission Troubles - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

I love the car but am very disappointed that after only 85k we are getting rid of it quickly due to alleged transmission problems and fuel pump problems. This car has been babied - all services, all maintenance, all done at the dealership. We just cannot justify a new transmission at a cost of over $4k. I really thought the volvo brand would take me much farther than 100k miles. I hate that we are in such a disposable society that we sacrifice quality for profitability. Volvo will not get any more of my money.

  • Afraid what the future may bring - 2001 Volvo V70

I have had my XC for 1 year now. I just took the car in for the 60k mile and was told I also needed to replace inner tie rods, along with some other expensive repair. I noticed one other reviewer also had to replace. I find this to be ridiculous. The worst thing, my car jolts, jumps, throttles off and I had the software replacement on the recall. Last night check engine light on when I just spent $1600 last month at the shop. This is scary. I am a loyal Volvo customer, this is my 2nd wagon (last one was 12 yrs old), but I dont think I will purchase another. The throttle problem is a dangerous one as you dont know when the car is not going to respond?

  • No better wagon for the $ - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

Ive been driving this wagon for almost 3 years and still love it. Its fast, responsive looks great and hauls a bunch of stuff (or 7 people with the 3rd row). Its still a solid ride, never been in the shop for anything other than regular maintenance. Cup holder lost its spring and original 17" tires (too loud) swapped for Michelin Pilots. Its only fair competition is the BMW and MB wagon (at least another $10K more). No mini-van or SUV comes close in terms of value, style, performance. In response to previous comment on 01 wagon being a "jerry-rigged Ford" ...Ford bought Volvo in 99 when the new model was already at the auto shows.
