This Year's Model Updates:

The Volvo V70 has been redesigned for 2001. Major changes include a new body structure, fresh styling, a revised interior and upgraded feature content. Safety figures prominently with the new V70 (as usual), but it is also more sporting than before, especially in T5 trim.

Pros:
  • Superb comfort, plenty of safety equipment, solid construction and amazing braking ability.
Cons:
  • High price, odd control placement.

This is undoubtedly the best car Ive ever owned (including other Volvos, Audis, BMWs, etc.). It blends comfort , style, functionality, and responsiveness in just the right measure. Ive had no problem to speak of in over two years. By picking the car up in Sweden (a great deal), I was able to get a stick shift, which only enhances its sports car feel.

  • Update on T5 - 2001 Volvo V70

Update of prior 01 T5 review after almost 2 years. Still love car, except for minor problems faced by others. "Upgraded" Pirelli tires SUCK - tire performance average and durability terrible - replaced three tires that developed "bulges", repaired many leaks and they are almost worn out after 27K miles. Mechanical dash cupholder broke. Finally, thanks to "daytime running lights" that leave all the lights on all the time, bulbs burn out often - replaced a headlight, turn signal and brake light. Still, these problems minor and tire issue will go away after Pirellis replaced once and for all. Positives of this excellent car completely outweigh negatives.

  • excellent all around vehicle - 2001 Volvo V70

We now have 65K miles on our black V-70 T-5, and appreciate more and more each day. With the optional sport seats, we can drive for 5 hours pain free. The car drives like a luxury car on the freeway, but handles like a well-tuned sports sedan on the back roads. It has incredible mid-range passing capabilities. If driven under 80 mph on long road trips it will cover 525 miles per tank. The only down side of owning this car, is the tire life on the optional 17" wheels (20-25K), and they arent cheap. It is a kick in the pants to drive, can hold 5 people and their luggage, or fold the seats down and it can swallow an antique side- board. Its a sleeper hot rod, family hauler & truck!

  • good car - 2001 Volvo V70

Bought used in Sept 2008 with 27000 miles, now is 37000. I change the oil and maintain myself. Fairly easy to work on, best to have code reader, but have not needed yet. Light bulbs here and there needing replacement, pretty easy to do. Japanese Aisen Warner transmission requires special mobil synthetic oil and dipstick should be checked regularly, it is in an awkward location, way low on drivers side. Only use Full synthetic oils, including brake fluid. If you do I would expect 200000 miles of good value, as our 25 year old volvo 240s. We love this car. Have not added any as trans. fluid is pink. Very good highway car.

I have owned this car since purchased new in August of 2000. I love driving the car, handling is crisp. I have got over 30 mpg on several occasions. It is so comfortable to drive and ride in, the seats are perfect for almost every body type. I had the same transmission problem that people mention on this website.

  • XC is a big improvement over SUV - 2001 Volvo V70

After 2 small SUVs I bought the XC. With the interior capacity, roof rack with cross rails and roof storage container, I can carry more than when I had an SUV. The ride is much smoother and the power of the turbo helps getting on the highway. I get about 18mpg around town and 28mpg on the highway. I have kept up with maintenance and only had a problem with a leaky angle drive. I have to drive farther for work, so I am putting more highway mileage on it. Very comfortable to drive long distance.

  • soooooo fun to drive - 2001 Volvo V70

I bought my T5 from a woman that ordered her car and picked it up in sweden. when she returned to the states she decided to sell her car. My volvo is a 5 speed manual trans. It is so fun to drive! No real mechanical problems, a turbo boost sensor went out, but replaced under warranty. Just returned from a 1200 mile road trip to Yosemite. I loved driving through the mountains. I cant wait to test drive a new AWD T5. The 2001 stereo is lacking, radio signal pick-up is moderate at best & I had to have the CD changer replaced twice (warranty). San Diego Volvo is very good to deal with.

  • Mikes V70 Review - 2001 Volvo V70

Overall, this is an excellent car; probably the most comfortable of any car Ive ever driven. It has a few reliability problems (since I bought it in July 2000, Ive had to replace the alternator, right electric door lock, brake booster, both headlight bulbs, one tail light bulb, and some air conditioning work - cant remember exactly, but it wasnt blowing cold air). Visibility out of the rear side windows is hampered a little by the front seat headrests. Very peppy, wonderful ride, and fun to drive.
