This Year's Model Updates:

The Volvo V70 has been redesigned for 2001. Major changes include a new body structure, fresh styling, a revised interior and upgraded feature content. Safety figures prominently with the new V70 (as usual), but it is also more sporting than before, especially in T5 trim.

Pros:
  • Superb comfort, plenty of safety equipment, solid construction and amazing braking ability.
Cons:
  • High price, odd control placement.

  • Leaks more than the Gulf - 2001 Volvo V70

This car was a problem child the moment we got it. Transmission computer failed, then the trans blew, engine mounts continually fail, side marker lights fell out several times. dipstick is constantly shot out, spraying oil everywhere, no solution from repair shop. Eats oil and gas like its going out of style. semi-auto shifter broke early, expensive to fix. It is safe though, spends more time in the shop than on the road!

Bought this car new. It was a very comfortable car and drove smoothly for a couple of years. After 2 years and 13k miles, transmission problems arose. Transmission problem temporarily fixed with some software upgrades. However, at 56k miles, the car jolts between gears and it needs an entire new transmission. I have read this is a problem with this model. Volvo NA claims no responsibility and that the car is simply past warranty. The company hung up on me! Transmission failure has resulted in numerous other problems with engine mounts and suspension. This vehicle has serious mechanical problems. Beware.

Dont buy this car! This car had an oil leak at the same spot three times during the first month of me owning it. When you first buy the car, it is fast! Its like a rocket! But after 12,000 miles, the car doesnt accelerate worth anything! The brakes needed to be replaced at 18,000 miles. The tires needed replacing at 20,000. The interior rattles like crazy. And there is a knocking sound whenever you make a left turn (which the dealership says is a "Normal Event.") The fuel pump is noisy! Buy a Toyota Sienna and youll be much happier with it!

  • Buyer Beware! - 2001 Volvo V70

Weve had constant trouble with our V70 T5, including electrical problems, brake problems, transmission software issues, speakers, rattling glovebox, malfunctioning cup holder, and weve had to replace 10 tires on the car. At 15 - 18 average MPG, the 247 HP of this car comes at a pretty steep price. The depreciation on the car in terms of dollars per month or year is VERY HIGH too. Our family has been delighted with Volvo products, (740s, 240s before that) until now. As of this writing, my advise would be to consider an alternative car/ brand.

  • WHAT A LEMON! - 2001 Volvo V70

Bought this car in Sept of 2005 with 50K miles on it. We have had nothing but problems. Full transmission replacement in 08 under warranty, locks failed, seatbelts in back all failed had to be replaced, throttle control module, battery issues. You name it, weve had it with this one. As soon as were able, we are getting rid of this car!

  • Buy this car if you like throwing money in the trash - 2001 Volvo V70

Everything has systematically broken down, cracked, snapped off or ripped on this car. My mechanic even shakes his head at the ridiculously poor quality of this vehicle. I spent well over 10,000 on mechanical repairs in the last 6 years, always thinking that each trip to the mechanic would be the last.....Ha! In addition to that expense- the following have happened: glove compartment hinge broken, electrical door locks and windows dont always work, panel by drive shaft cracked, side view mirror adjuster broken off, most speakers are not working, locking system on back hatch doesnt always close, vent panel for defrost fell off, and more burnt out head and tail lights than imaginable.

  • Biggest Mistake I Ever Made When Buying A Car - 2001 Volvo V70
    By -

I thought when I bought a Volvo I was getting a quality vehicle. While it does have the most comfortable seats , a decent enough stereo system, and other interior features that are very appealing it has become a glorified enclosed couch sitting in my driveway. How I wish I had read the reviews here before purchasing because I would have changed my mind. I went with it because of the reputation of the company that I knew of in the mid-80s. It lasted a total of 6 days from purchase from a private seller. I noticed that the heater wasnt putting out and checked fluid levels and topped off the radiator. It came home on a rollback: overheated+blown head gasket. Never, ever, again. What a waste!!!
