This Year's Model Updates:

The big news is the arrival of the S60 2.4T AWD and its slick electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, all S60 models get Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA), enhanced traction control performance and improved throttle management, resulting in quicker response in everyday driving situations. Volvo's Dynamic Stability Traction Control (DSTC) system is now standard in T5 models and optional for the 2.4T AWD (starting in December 2001). Other model-specific changes include satellite controls on the steering wheel and rear cupholders for the base 2.4 model and a memory function for the power seats and mirrors in 2.4T and T5 models. The entire lineup gets revised rear headrests, ISO-FIX child restraint attachment points and an emergency trunk release handle.

Pros:
  • Long list of standard safety features, luxurious interior, powerful turbocharged engine in top-line T5 model, deceptively quick 2.4T powerplant, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Handling lacks true sport-sedan precision, expensive optional equipment, torque steer in the T5 model.

I bought my S60AWD 7 months ago with 10000 on it Ive put 8000 miles on it so far, and it has been perfect. I lowered it and it transformed the car into a handling fool. The ride is as good or better than before and it handles like a slot car. Comfortable, roomy in front. No complaints whatsoever. Could have a better (standard) stereo and speakers. I wish it had the optional Volvo radio as that is a wonderful piece J L

This car has been reliable and trouble-free for the first 8000 miles. The base with the 5-spd has plenty of get up and go for most driving situations. Car handles great in the snow and rain, especially with Stability Traction Control. A great car for the money if you take it easy on options. Highly recommend the Volvo Overseas Delivery program unless you can get a great deal off the lot.

Good on open highways, terrible ride on rougher roads. Great engine, but terrible car quality overall. Purchased new with 8K on odometer: * Before 30K miles: - Engine mounts broke - Black smoke from air.cond vents (on inspection Calabasas Volvo reported nothing found.. yeah right) - some air.cond fans no longer work - Radio sporadically changes station - Suspension bushings broke - Defrost broke - only does 1/2 window * Before 60K: - Transmission problems - takes 5+ secs to get in gear - Roof gutter-tracks paint is pealing - Plastic ext. trim is popping off - Plastic ext. trim quickly faded to light gray - Eng. mnts broke a 2nd time * much much more..

  • Not worth it - 2002 Volvo S60

Volvo has a complete lack of customer care concepts. Weve had several mechanical problems and fear the day the warranty runs out. Very difficult to see in order to change lanes. Back seat has NO leg room.

  • Very Good Vehicle - 2002 Volvo S60

Ive had the car about 8 months. So far very reliable. It wants to run. Very, very comfortable car with great front seats. Stereo is excellent, climate controls intuitive. Ive always had 5-speeds in sedans, but this automatic has me converted with its performance. The 5-cylinder is a good compromise of performance and economy. Im getting 28 mpg [25 mile commute, cruising at 70 mph] with ample reserve power when needed.

  • GREAT and Terrible all in one - 2002 Volvo S60

We bought our S60 in 2003 and we have been very happy with the performance of the car. Cosmetically however there is room for a world of improvement. The gas cover doors have a tendency to fall off (Ive seen at least 50 Volvos from 2001-2003 riding around without the cover since ours fell off while traveling on I-95). According to our mechanic (Volvo certified) they replace about 10-15 gas covers per month. The console door likewise has a tendency to become non-functional.

As tradition and loyaty continues, Im now in my 3rd Volvo, a 2002 S-60 2.4T. So far its living up to its reputation. Its by far the most enjoyable model to drive.

  • Beware of Customer Service - 2002 Volvo S60
    By -

We bought this car new coz we loved the look and reputation of Volvo. However, weve had major customer service problems as well as electrical problems. Also, it is very difficult to see to change lanes due to the head rests in the back and the way the car frame is built.
