Fantastic car - 1996 Volvo 850
By I love my Volvo - June 27 - 5:50 amWe bought our 96 Volvo Wagon in 1998 with 30,000 miles on it. We love this car. It now has 106,000 miles on it and is still running like the day we bought it. It is very comfortable, has decent pickup and handles very well. The ride is nice and controlled. Only weak spots are the brakes tend to warp to easy (you just need to upgrade to a higher quality rotor) and the factory A/C unit will only last a few years before you have to spend $1000 to replace it. The A/C in general is not great, but I have never been in a European car with great A/C.

Best overall car - 1996 Volvo 850
By frederick - May 22 - 2:00 amI have driven both the RSX type-S and the Integra GSR but I find that the 850 Turbo is my favorite car. Although it is slower in 0-60 time it is more fun to drive cuz it can easily get to 130. The interior has been pretty good except the radio which needs a little work. Also, I have been in an accident on the highway and NO damage.

Expensive to Own, Expensive to Repair - 1996 Volvo 850
By brokebyvolvo - April 17 - 10:00 amHas only 62000 miles, but AC cost $2200 to fix, including $1500 to replace an evaporator buried in the dashboard,& the ENTIRE dash must be removed to get to this part. Plus ABS sensor $600; new rotors, $1000; starter relay $200 motor mounts $350; rear stabilizer bar $500; power antenna $450. Add in $750 every 10,000 miles for required maintenance, & your insurance plus car payments are zilch compared to the special payments you have to make to a bank account dedicated solely to the 1996 Volvo 850 Repair Fund.

safe and reliable car - 1996 Volvo 850
By kcc - April 8 - 10:00 amI bought this car used for my daughters last year in high school and to take her into the college years. Not one thing has gone wrong with this car. I was lucky to have purchased it from someone who had meticulously taken care of it, taking it to all scheduled maintenance at a volvo service dept., and had always garaged it. I have had previous older volvos, and by far the 850 has been the best and most reliable out of the bunch.

Swedish Tank - 1996 Volvo 850
By gman513 - March 7 - 3:00 amThis is a very safe and reliable car. I will never drive anything else other then a Volvo. I going to drive my 850 until it falls apart (that will never happen). I have not had one problem with this car. It still has a good 200k+ life left on the engine.

Safe, Reliable Car - 1996 Volvo 850
By fusnyphi - December 11 - 2:00 amBought new in 1996 and maintained regularly through the dealership until the warranty expired. Now serviced by a more trustworthy independent import repair shop. Save by buying parts online. A strong, solid, dependable car (150k miles). Excellent brakes, but rotors are not durable. No significant mechanical problems.

Tough times in the last 2 yrs - 1996 Volvo 850
By turbodude99 - October 12 - 2:00 amGreat car to drive, but expensive to keep on the road. It has high mileage, but Volvos are expected to be solid. Replacements over the last couple of years - ABS unit, turbo (expected at 150K), AC compressor, both O2 sensors, shocks and complete brakes (rears twice) water pump, fuel pump,2 ABS sensors, + minor items. It currently is burning / losing oil. Source not found yet. I did a lot of research on this vehicle prior to buying it and unfortunately, was very disapointed in the reliability.
