Ouch! - 1996 Volvo 850
By mkirkland - January 19 - 2:00 amI am a single mom with a three year old and know nothing about cars but sure am learning with this one! I have spent so much money on repairs I am told are normal. It is nickle and diming me to death. Love it for the safety and all, but come on - $600 here, $800 there. Im going broke. Its cool looking but I think Ill go to something with lower repair costs.

Sorry I bought it - 1996 Volvo 850
By kbarry - July 27 - 2:00 amThe 1996 850 has been a mechanical nightmare for me. Rear Main seals, alternator, A/C problems, blower motor, radiator fan, cooling leaks, engine mounts, ABS module failure, bad antenna, leaky sunroof, peeling paint. I bought this car due to Volvos legenday durability and high resale. Today, the car isnt worth squat on trade and needs about $2k worth of further reapirs to return it back to normal.

False Advertising - 1996 Volvo 850
By No Volvo for You - July 4 - 2:00 amI bought a Volvo because of what I believed they had a reputation for producing safe, trouble-free, cars that would last many years. After 6+ years, Ive had to spend over $13,000 on repairs to the car -- whats kept me going is the thought that nothing else could happen....well Ive been wrong every time. Im going to get through this winter, sell it or give it away and will steer clear of Volvo (horrendous service and warranty replacement policies BTW) as I suggest you or anyone considering a Volvo do as well.

At least its safe - 1996 Volvo 850
By Not pleased - June 8 - 12:33 pmI just bought this car three months ago. In that time frame, the gas tank was replaced, the ABS failed, check engine light has been on twice, brake master cylinder has failed, FM radio died, and the catalytic converter failed. I love the interior, but the plastic on the doors seems to be falling apart. The car is slow and safe, but what would you expect from a Volvo? Needless to say, I wont buy another.

Love affair is fading - 1996 Volvo 850
By Jim Pribbeno - May 14 - 10:00 am96 850 turbo is fun to drive with its sporty suspension, 16 low profile tires, & 222 HP performance. Unfortunately its also the most expensive Volvo weve owned (4 others) in terms of upkeep. Compared to our other Volvo, a 92 960 wagon, the 850 is a cash cow!!! Ive put on new tires every 23k miles. Ive replaced the transmission (dealer only repair, $2400) at 90k miles, why? A new air mass sensor unit ($250). Ive refilled a/c several times because the evaporator leaks & costs over $1000 to replace. The TRAC & ABS lights are always on & the braking system occasionally freaks out requiring a new computer module costing over $300. Why?

Not A Good Idea - 1996 Volvo 850
By kittycrabbs - January 9 - 5:56 amPeople like to say Ford screwed up Volvo, but the 850 was made long before Ford took over and its a dog. Constant front alignment problems, tire wear, abs problems, shifter wouldnt move, glove box decided not to open. I got rid of the car when the seat belt wouldnt pull away from the door post- wanted $650 to fix it. Never left me stranded, but the smallest repair job cost a fortune. I thought Id have it a lot longer than 130k miles.

Need a Second Job Just to Keep Going - 1996 Volvo 850
By Joe-Unhappy Owner - January 24 - 2:00 amAs with others, I have foudn this car a disappointment. It works very well, but I need to work two jobs to keep it in good working order. Also, quality of dealer servicing is variant. I had a dealer mess up a belt replacement, which caused engine failure on highway, destroying original engine. I have spent approx. $13K servicing this car since buying it new. I am looking for a new Japanese compact...

Volvo didnt stand behind the car - 1996 Volvo 850
By CraigJ - May 30 - 2:00 amAC died while still under warranty, they "fixed" and it died again after two months use. Turned out to be a design flaw due to new refrigerants, evap rotted from inside out. Dealer and Volvo refused to defray any cost whatsoever, cost me $1300. NEVER AGAIN...

Sad car - 1996 Volvo 850
By pickaxpete - March 5 - 2:00 amI think this is the worst used car I have ever owned. After having the car inspected pre sale, all kinds of problems have cost me thousands and I have only driven it 3000 miles. From emission control problems to sensors to brakes this car continues to go bad. I spent over a thousand on emission repairs and hundreds more on brakes and recently the sensor that controls traction, ABS and cruise went bad. The dealer I am going to says that many of these problems are not common at my mileage of 100,000 but this car seems to have alot of problems. If you buy one, do it from a dealer and get a good, written warranty which includes passing state emission tests.
