Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen is an automaker based in Germany. Its products typically command a higher price than those of competing models, but the return is a more upscale driving and ownership experience.
In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to build a small, inexpensive car at the request of Adolph Hitler. His answer -- a beetle-shaped sedan that was called a Volkswagen (German for "people's car") -- debuted two years later. Hitler had a town built near the plant for factory workers; he named it Kraft durch Freude Stadt (derived from the Nazi party's motto, "Joy through Strength"), and soon decided that Porsche's creation should be named the KdF-wagen (short for the "Joy through Strength" car). This upset Porsche, who was not political.
World War II delayed production of the vehicle; the factory suffered extensive damage during combat, and was ultimately taken over by the British Army. The company was renamed Volkswagen, and the town at the factory was renamed Wolfsburg (after Werner von Schulenberg of Wolfsburg, who had been forced to surrender his land for the construction of the town and factory). By the end of the 1940s, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle had begun. The model made its first appearance on U.S. shores in 1949.
The 1950s saw Volkswagen broadening its product range, adding the Bus (Type 2) to its lineup. The Bus, especially, proved quite popular due to its versatility. And the Beetle, which went on to become the best-selling car of all time, quickly showed signs of being an enduring favorite, with more than 1 million models produced at the Wolfsburg factory by 1955. This decade also saw the debut of the Karmann Ghia sports car, which featured a sleek, Italian-designed two-seater body atop a Beetle platform.
Volkswagen's star rose during the 1960s, its success fueled largely by the breakout success of the Beetle. The car benefited from an effective advertising campaign and from an appearance in a popular Disney movie. By the close of the decade, Volkswagen's yearly output of Beetles topped the 1 million mark.
In 1972, with more than 15 million units assembled, the Beetle topped the world production record set by Ford's Model T. Mid-decade saw the launch of a new era of Volkswagens that had front-mounted, water-cooled engines driving the front wheels. The Passat (Dasher in the U.S.) was the first of the new breed and was built using standardized components that could be used interchangeably among other models in the manufacturer's lineup. The Passat was soon joined by the Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.), which met with immediate success. By the end of the decade, the manufacturer's lineup had grown to include the Scirocco sport coupe and the performance-oriented Golf/Rabbit GTI. The Beetle, however, was discontinued for the U.S. market.
The Golf grew in popularity during the '80s, becoming Volkswagen's most popular model. When a second generation of the car was built in 1983, it was crafted in a mostly automated process using robots -- marking the first time robots had been used in vehicle manufacture. By the mid-'80s, the U.S. version traded the Rabbit name for "Golf." The higher-performance Golf GTI helped the manufacturer make waves on the rally circuit. In 1986, Volkswagen Motorsport nabbed the title of Group A World Rally Champions.
Volkswagen saw its sales in the North American market tumble during the early '90s, but by the end of the decade, refocused marketing efforts and an increased emphasis on new products had brought about a turnaround in the company's fortunes. The popular New Beetle helped put the company back on the radar in the United States (though it fared less successfully in European markets). The body style was based on the classic Beetle, and it struck a chord with consumers who still had a place in their hearts for the iconic, cheerful-looking "love bug."
The new millennium saw Volkswagen moving into the luxury segment with the launch of the pricey Phaeton sedan and Touareg SUV. Though well-designed and executed, the Phaeton was a disappointment sales-wise, perhaps signaling unwillingness on the part of consumers to shell out premium dollars for a brand that lacks the cachet of established upscale names like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Luckily, Volkswagen has seen success with other vehicles in its lineup, which currently includes everything from family-oriented sedans to roomy SUVs. Today, the automaker enjoys a reputation for crafting vehicles that offer refined handling and upscale accommodations.

Very impressive - 2003 Volkswagen Passat
By blue25 - April 2 - 4:43 pmRecently bought this car to replace our Volvo V70 wagon which broke down. Wow, is this car great. In hindsight I wish I would have never bought the Volvo. The feel and drive of this car is great. It seems to be well designed and engineered. The interior is luxurious, and the car handles great. The 4Motion system which is really the Audi Quattro system is very responsive. I look forward to many great years with this car.

Love this car! - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta
By Gadgetklm - April 2 - 8:06 amI traded a 2005 Avalon Touring for a Sportswagon TDi. I got a good deal on my trade-in and $1300 tax CREDIT for buying a high mileage car! These cars are a little hard to find though. Routine Maintenance is covered for 3 years. I was looking for a car that I loved to drive. This feels like most other German engineered cars..tight, precise handling, good firm ride, and a unique driving experience. The last car I enjoyed driving this much was my CTS. This car broke the Guiness 48 state mileage world record..58.8mpg! Now you wont get this kind of mileage, expect 35-38 general driving, and 45-48 on the interstate. But this little turbo diesel is wonderful! Powerful, quiet and extremely efficient

Great family car - 2011 Volkswagen JETTA SPORTWAGEN
By heather_07hch - April 1 - 11:45 pmI purchased my Sportwagen 2 weeks ago, and love it. We replaced a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid, after a new hybrid battery, and seeing what happens when the hybrid system fails. The car did not feel safe anymore. Averaging about 38 mpg in the hybrid, I wanted a larger car, but did not want to sacrifice fuel economy. I am 510", husband is 6, and kids are ages 5 and 7. We were a bit cramped. When packing up for a day at the lake, or a road trip, we could hardly fit our belongings in the car. So, the Sportwagen has solved all of these issues. Fuel economy is fantastic, there is more than enough room, and the car just looks, feels, and handles like a dream. Very pleased!

Good Mileage Doesnt Have to Be Ugly - 2010 Volkswagen CC
By VW from GA - April 1 - 11:36 pmThe exterior is a head turner! Its a great design thats not going to be seen on every corner. The interior, after the initial shock of the two tone leatherette, grows on you quickly. Fit and finish is above average for this price range. The car is very quiet and the seats are very comfortable, more comfortable than my wifes MB E500 in fact. Stereo is fairly intuitive as are most of the controls. Getting a smooth start takes a bit of practice and remembering to "activate" the Parking Brake every time you park takes some getting used to. Overall, very pleased. Good mileage, great looks, a peppy engine and comfortable seats make it a winner!

By vw4life - March 31 - 6:00 amA great car... The 2.0 liter engine could do with more horses though...the styling is great and handling is superb !!! I have not had any major complaints about the car (the cup holder did break in winter)No electrical problems...no engine problems. the stock tires were horrible (goodyear) replaced them at 36K miles (antenna was stolen once.. I have 45K miles on it now and I still love driving the car... wish I had gone for the vr6... waiting for the 2003 vr6

Nice alternative to Accord/Camry/Altima - 2010 Volkswagen CC
By Smitty - March 30 - 4:43 amI needed a car that could be driven a lot, so I was looking for a car that got 30+ MPG on the highway. Most of the cars on the list ended up being gutless econoboxes that were like appliances to drive and had bare-bones interiors with cheap, hard plastics. The Jetta TDI was on the list and was fine to drive, but when I was able to get a CC for a lower monthly payment, that made it a surprising possibility. It feels like a luxury car, and I look forward to driving it. Fuel mileage has been surprisingly good. If you care enough to be reading this review, do yourself a favor and actually drive one.

My GTI Back in Black - 2007 Volkswagen GTI
By Lollybug - March 30 - 1:00 amSince I was a teenager I drove an 84 VW Scirocco. Later in life, for work related reasons I needed a 4X4 so I got a Liberty (mistake!) and parked my VW for restoration. Ive missed it ever since. Nothing drives like a VW and never more has this been true than with their new 2007 GTI. In the short time Ive had it, its earned the title of "Car of the Year" to me. Performance is top-notch, the styling and interior is beautiful; it has the feel of a much more expensive auto. Its solid on the road and sticks to it when taking corners. You feel safe, secure, and you know youre getting value for your money. The 2007 GTI gets fabulous gas mileage and has actually brought fun back to the daily commute.

Loads of Fun - Great Value - 2007 Volkswagen EOS
By Old&Crazy - March 29 - 3:46 pmMy Eos is optioned with the sports package, 18 inch wheels/Pirelli P-6s and 6 speed auto. It is great fun to drive. The cabin is quiet with the top up or down. It feels a bit quicker than the stated 0-60 times. It has a nice punch above 40 mph. It also has a nice balance between handling and ride. The handling dynamics are good enough to make the car fun, but not equal to BMW as some other reviewers have written. The engine/transmission set-up very responsive. The leather sports seats are well bolstered and very comfortable. I am taller and larger than average guy and the interior is very comfortable. I also looked at Volvo C70 and the VW is more fun and about $8,000 less expensive when optioned out. The Eos is a great car, great value, and loads of fun to drive.

3rd Diesel/7th VW - 2003 Volkswagen Golf
By TDIBabs - March 27 - 10:00 amThis is the 3rd Diesel in our family (also had a Rabbit and currently an 18- year old Jetta that still runs fine). I picked up my TDI the other day and so far have been very impressed. It doesnt have the same zoom as my Subie, but since its mostly for city traffic, its perfect. It may be the best commuter/city driving car ever--maybe thats why its so popular in Europe. BTW, they seem to have revised the cupholder placement on the later 2003s, or maybe its because mine has Monsoon. Theyre down between the seats, and can even hold Big Gulps.
