Make Overview:

Volkswagen is an automaker based in Germany. Its products typically command a higher price than those of competing models, but the return is a more upscale driving and ownership experience.

In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to build a small, inexpensive car at the request of Adolph Hitler. His answer -- a beetle-shaped sedan that was called a Volkswagen (German for "people's car") -- debuted two years later. Hitler had a town built near the plant for factory workers; he named it Kraft durch Freude Stadt (derived from the Nazi party's motto, "Joy through Strength"), and soon decided that Porsche's creation should be named the KdF-wagen (short for the "Joy through Strength" car). This upset Porsche, who was not political.

World War II delayed production of the vehicle; the factory suffered extensive damage during combat, and was ultimately taken over by the British Army. The company was renamed Volkswagen, and the town at the factory was renamed Wolfsburg (after Werner von Schulenberg of Wolfsburg, who had been forced to surrender his land for the construction of the town and factory). By the end of the 1940s, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle had begun. The model made its first appearance on U.S. shores in 1949.

The 1950s saw Volkswagen broadening its product range, adding the Bus (Type 2) to its lineup. The Bus, especially, proved quite popular due to its versatility. And the Beetle, which went on to become the best-selling car of all time, quickly showed signs of being an enduring favorite, with more than 1 million models produced at the Wolfsburg factory by 1955. This decade also saw the debut of the Karmann Ghia sports car, which featured a sleek, Italian-designed two-seater body atop a Beetle platform.

Volkswagen's star rose during the 1960s, its success fueled largely by the breakout success of the Beetle. The car benefited from an effective advertising campaign and from an appearance in a popular Disney movie. By the close of the decade, Volkswagen's yearly output of Beetles topped the 1 million mark.

In 1972, with more than 15 million units assembled, the Beetle topped the world production record set by Ford's Model T. Mid-decade saw the launch of a new era of Volkswagens that had front-mounted, water-cooled engines driving the front wheels. The Passat (Dasher in the U.S.) was the first of the new breed and was built using standardized components that could be used interchangeably among other models in the manufacturer's lineup. The Passat was soon joined by the Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.), which met with immediate success. By the end of the decade, the manufacturer's lineup had grown to include the Scirocco sport coupe and the performance-oriented Golf/Rabbit GTI. The Beetle, however, was discontinued for the U.S. market.

The Golf grew in popularity during the '80s, becoming Volkswagen's most popular model. When a second generation of the car was built in 1983, it was crafted in a mostly automated process using robots -- marking the first time robots had been used in vehicle manufacture. By the mid-'80s, the U.S. version traded the Rabbit name for "Golf." The higher-performance Golf GTI helped the manufacturer make waves on the rally circuit. In 1986, Volkswagen Motorsport nabbed the title of Group A World Rally Champions.

Volkswagen saw its sales in the North American market tumble during the early '90s, but by the end of the decade, refocused marketing efforts and an increased emphasis on new products had brought about a turnaround in the company's fortunes. The popular New Beetle helped put the company back on the radar in the United States (though it fared less successfully in European markets). The body style was based on the classic Beetle, and it struck a chord with consumers who still had a place in their hearts for the iconic, cheerful-looking "love bug."

The new millennium saw Volkswagen moving into the luxury segment with the launch of the pricey Phaeton sedan and Touareg SUV. Though well-designed and executed, the Phaeton was a disappointment sales-wise, perhaps signaling unwillingness on the part of consumers to shell out premium dollars for a brand that lacks the cachet of established upscale names like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Luckily, Volkswagen has seen success with other vehicles in its lineup, which currently includes everything from family-oriented sedans to roomy SUVs. Today, the automaker enjoys a reputation for crafting vehicles that offer refined handling and upscale accommodations.

  • Best Real!!! SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

The best SUV for the price. Real off road capability, with good on road ability. Fit and finish is first class. Needs a bit more power, but V-6 is enough for every day use. Great looks, much better looking then a x5. Look no further!!!

  • Great Wagen for an amazing price - 2009 Volkswagen Jetta

Love this Wagon, and have found new features while using it on a road trip. One BIG problem is that the seats hug your back and dont let your lower back rest normally onto the seat. It almost squeezes your upper back and doesnt allow for proper breathing. Besides that, very happy with the my VW and would recommend it to anyone.

  • 2002 GLX Cabrio - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

I have wanted one of these since the cabriolet (when I was in college)came out in the 80s. This is a "play car" (3rd vehicle)for our family. After lugging around in a Yukon XL all day with kids this car is treat to drive.

  • Jetta TDI - 2000 Volkswagen Jetta

My only bad experiences have been due to a faulty air flow sensor and the dealer sold me on a bad extended warranty. Other than that the car has been mostly great. I do however have some reservations about the automatic transmission mated to the TDI because occasionally it does seem to really hunt for the proper gear.

  • reliability issues but great car besides that - 2009 Volkswagen Passat

The Edmunds review is spot on. The car is fun to drive, sporty and yet very comfortable. I love this car, but within two months it has broke down on me twice to include a fuel pressure regulator and a water pump. Luckily it was certified pre owned so out of pocket costs were minimal. I take great care of this car and maintenance it myself every 5000 miles with synthetic oil and have already replaced air cleaner. Hard to enjoy the car if it will keep breaking down and im only at 55000 miles. Plenty of room in the back with 2 kids and the trunk is huge. I can fit large strollers among other things.

  • So far so good - 2016 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Recently bought a new 2016 Passat SE with Tech and Lighting Packages. I test drove many other vehicles before deciding on the Passat. The only factors causing any hesitation are the current resales values and VWs reputation of average (at best) reliability. The Passat drove and fit my needs much better than an Accord or Mazda 6. It really seems to fit between the BMW/Audi/Lexus level and the CamCord level. Great ride, incredible usable space, excellent infotainment features and functionality, strong MPG and decent engine/transmission performance. I was consistently disappointed in the Accord (interior and ride), Mazda 6 (noisy, rear seat space), Subaru Outback (power) with each test drive and was pleasantly surprised each time I drove the Passat. Either many auto critics really dont know cars or they dont appreciate the real-world transportation needs of most drivers. All cars have a few flaws so a couple criticisms - would be nice with a bit more torque in first and second gears. Seats are quite comfortable as is but throw in the seat from a CC and it would be magnificent. Yes, styling is a bit bland but I prefer a car with a bit more understated design. Put together, this car should be much higher on recommended lists.

  • An excellent value - 1999 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

Ive had my 99 passat now for almost 2 years and have clocked about 40k miles on it (odometer currently reads a little over 90k) the only problems ive had with it are a failed catalytic converter(totally my fault, i drove the car till gas was empty, still VW replaced for free), leaking engine seal (covered under warranty) and heated side mirrors(this i had to pay for), right now, it seems my cruise control is starting to act up. otherwsie, car is very reliable, considering the mileage , id say this was a really good record. i think some ppl have just been stuck with lemons. too bad we dont hear from more satisfied drivers.

  • Faster Than It Looks - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
    By -

Our 2001 Turbo Beetle has been a real hoot since day one! Ours has special limited-edition Vortex Blue paint, which seems to get noticed a little more and looks great with its black leather seats. The 150 hp 1.8 liter turbo motor and 5-speed manual really gives the car some punch, to the point that it seems to surprise some other drivers with its quickness. Its especially responsive while at highway speeds and the need to pass or speed up for a traffic opening happens. Response is "right now" in any gear. There no real turbo lag. Its been reliable and is now at 40,000 miles with no major troubles. My wife drives it most and she loves it, too.

  • Extensive Repairs - 2005 Volkswagen Passat
    By -

I purchased a used 2005 Volkswagen Passat in 2011. In less then 4 years of owning this car, I have spent over 5K in car repairs. Its one thing to fix normal wear and tear, such as replacing breaks, and worn out tires, but to replace the engine mounts, hinges on the trunk, the window panel, screws on the door which somehow fell off, replaced the air pump which had water in it, had work done on the sunroof which seemed to have issues closing and lastly, have a ongoing loud engine sound at the start of the car.

  • Headliner - 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Im surprised no one else has mentioned, at least not that Ive seen, the headliner falling down. My car, granted has 65,000 miles on it, but the headliner started falling down already. Of course its out of warranty and they wanted to charge me a thousand dollars to fix it. Needless to say I was/am not happy about that. No cars headliner should fall down after 4 years. I know people with cars older than 10 years and their headliners are still in tact. Otherwise the car is pretty decent. I dont think Id be another Volkswagen. I had the same problem with the finish coming off my buttons, luckily that was covered under warranty at the time.
