Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen is an automaker based in Germany. Its products typically command a higher price than those of competing models, but the return is a more upscale driving and ownership experience.
In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to build a small, inexpensive car at the request of Adolph Hitler. His answer -- a beetle-shaped sedan that was called a Volkswagen (German for "people's car") -- debuted two years later. Hitler had a town built near the plant for factory workers; he named it Kraft durch Freude Stadt (derived from the Nazi party's motto, "Joy through Strength"), and soon decided that Porsche's creation should be named the KdF-wagen (short for the "Joy through Strength" car). This upset Porsche, who was not political.
World War II delayed production of the vehicle; the factory suffered extensive damage during combat, and was ultimately taken over by the British Army. The company was renamed Volkswagen, and the town at the factory was renamed Wolfsburg (after Werner von Schulenberg of Wolfsburg, who had been forced to surrender his land for the construction of the town and factory). By the end of the 1940s, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle had begun. The model made its first appearance on U.S. shores in 1949.
The 1950s saw Volkswagen broadening its product range, adding the Bus (Type 2) to its lineup. The Bus, especially, proved quite popular due to its versatility. And the Beetle, which went on to become the best-selling car of all time, quickly showed signs of being an enduring favorite, with more than 1 million models produced at the Wolfsburg factory by 1955. This decade also saw the debut of the Karmann Ghia sports car, which featured a sleek, Italian-designed two-seater body atop a Beetle platform.
Volkswagen's star rose during the 1960s, its success fueled largely by the breakout success of the Beetle. The car benefited from an effective advertising campaign and from an appearance in a popular Disney movie. By the close of the decade, Volkswagen's yearly output of Beetles topped the 1 million mark.
In 1972, with more than 15 million units assembled, the Beetle topped the world production record set by Ford's Model T. Mid-decade saw the launch of a new era of Volkswagens that had front-mounted, water-cooled engines driving the front wheels. The Passat (Dasher in the U.S.) was the first of the new breed and was built using standardized components that could be used interchangeably among other models in the manufacturer's lineup. The Passat was soon joined by the Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.), which met with immediate success. By the end of the decade, the manufacturer's lineup had grown to include the Scirocco sport coupe and the performance-oriented Golf/Rabbit GTI. The Beetle, however, was discontinued for the U.S. market.
The Golf grew in popularity during the '80s, becoming Volkswagen's most popular model. When a second generation of the car was built in 1983, it was crafted in a mostly automated process using robots -- marking the first time robots had been used in vehicle manufacture. By the mid-'80s, the U.S. version traded the Rabbit name for "Golf." The higher-performance Golf GTI helped the manufacturer make waves on the rally circuit. In 1986, Volkswagen Motorsport nabbed the title of Group A World Rally Champions.
Volkswagen saw its sales in the North American market tumble during the early '90s, but by the end of the decade, refocused marketing efforts and an increased emphasis on new products had brought about a turnaround in the company's fortunes. The popular New Beetle helped put the company back on the radar in the United States (though it fared less successfully in European markets). The body style was based on the classic Beetle, and it struck a chord with consumers who still had a place in their hearts for the iconic, cheerful-looking "love bug."
The new millennium saw Volkswagen moving into the luxury segment with the launch of the pricey Phaeton sedan and Touareg SUV. Though well-designed and executed, the Phaeton was a disappointment sales-wise, perhaps signaling unwillingness on the part of consumers to shell out premium dollars for a brand that lacks the cachet of established upscale names like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Luckily, Volkswagen has seen success with other vehicles in its lineup, which currently includes everything from family-oriented sedans to roomy SUVs. Today, the automaker enjoys a reputation for crafting vehicles that offer refined handling and upscale accommodations.

One year later, my CC still rocks! - 2009 Volkswagen CC
By Mark - January 6 - 5:00 pmJust a follow up after a year of ownership. Bought the CC new in July 09, and have loved it ever since. I changed jobs, and now commute 50 miles on back roads every day. One thing that I have noticed is that the blind spots are pretty bad on this car. You really have to pay attention to what the other cars around you are doing. Otherwise, this car is very fast and has excellent handling. The low center of gravity means that you go faster without realizing it. The interior has held up well, despite the best efforts of my 2 year old. Ive averaged 30+ mpg on typical drives. No noticeable oil consumption. Overall, it has been the best VW Ive owned (out of 4 since 98)

No regrets - 2010 Volkswagen Golf
By motorstreet - January 5 - 11:50 pmThis is a great car, its roomy, fun to drive, really well built, pretty fast, and incredibly fuel-efficient. I get 43-45 mpg in my commute, mid 50s on the highway (I got 59 mpg recently), and mid 30s in the city. The Golf is surprisingly good in the winter (I put snow tires on it), it got through over foot of snow in my driveway pretty easily last winter. This car constantly surprises me with its talents.

Jetta Wolfsburg, Nice Car! - 2007 Volkswagen Jetta
By JettaDriver - January 5 - 12:10 pmThis is my second VW Jetta that I have purchased. I traded in my 2004 Jetta GL and upgraded to the 2007 Wolfsburg Jetta. I couldnt think of any other car to purchase. It has always been reliable, great on gas, a smooth ride, and held its value very well. So far I am very impressed with the changes on the interior. Since the 2004 model they have added the temperature gauge, arm rest/console, mp3 jack, etc. The safety features are awesome too!

Great Truck - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg
By cknudsen - January 5 - 9:03 amThis has been a great truck. It drives great and very comfortable. Its not like any other SUV. It handles better than most cars. I manage to get about 19-20 mpg on the highway. Its no econo-car, but its not too bad considering. Compare that to a Lincoln Navigator. If you want to drive this vehicle in anything other than gas-miser mode (or pass someone), you need to switch the transmission from "D" to "S" or shift manually.... which is fine for me considering current gas prices.

girlfriend - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
By Nelson - January 5 - 8:16 amThe saleswoman at the dealer compared the TDI to the 1.8t as "Do you want the wife or the girlfriend?". This is definitely the girlfriend. Goes like a scared rabbit-dont want to say what Ive done. It will throw you out the door before it leans anywhere. The sport seats wrap around you and keep you there. I drove from central Ontario to Cape Breton and back in 12 days and never felt bored or uncomfortable.

Volkswagen GTI is Hot for 2006 - 2006 Volkswagen GTI
By scooter j - January 2 - 6:26 pmI test drove the 2005 Volkswagen GTI and the purchased the 2006 model. There is no comparison between the two. The new GTI is twice the car, its a lot smoother, has no no turbo lag, and runs at lower rpm with its 6-speed manual transmission. It is just a great car!

Overkill for USA - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg
By Love it Hate VW - January 2 - 3:56 pmBought new in 05. Drove to work around DC area and on trips up an down the east coast. Hauled a boat trailer with great ease. This thing has torque! AWD is terrific in the snow. After 45000 miles the nav/radio would not turn off. Killed battery. VW replaced at 50,000 no charge but had to wait 6 weeks for the part!?! At 71000 mi noticed rough running intermittently. Dealer had to drop engine ($2500 P&L) and repair timing gear area (another $2500P&L) Serviced only by VW. Cannot guarantee repeat. If I had know of this possibility would not have bought it. VW has no idea how to address the luxury market. Loaner cars during warranty were trade ins not even VW!! VW America no help.
