Overview & Reviews
Volkswagen is an automaker based in Germany. Its products typically command a higher price than those of competing models, but the return is a more upscale driving and ownership experience.
In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche was commissioned to build a small, inexpensive car at the request of Adolph Hitler. His answer -- a beetle-shaped sedan that was called a Volkswagen (German for "people's car") -- debuted two years later. Hitler had a town built near the plant for factory workers; he named it Kraft durch Freude Stadt (derived from the Nazi party's motto, "Joy through Strength"), and soon decided that Porsche's creation should be named the KdF-wagen (short for the "Joy through Strength" car). This upset Porsche, who was not political.
World War II delayed production of the vehicle; the factory suffered extensive damage during combat, and was ultimately taken over by the British Army. The company was renamed Volkswagen, and the town at the factory was renamed Wolfsburg (after Werner von Schulenberg of Wolfsburg, who had been forced to surrender his land for the construction of the town and factory). By the end of the 1940s, mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle had begun. The model made its first appearance on U.S. shores in 1949.
The 1950s saw Volkswagen broadening its product range, adding the Bus (Type 2) to its lineup. The Bus, especially, proved quite popular due to its versatility. And the Beetle, which went on to become the best-selling car of all time, quickly showed signs of being an enduring favorite, with more than 1 million models produced at the Wolfsburg factory by 1955. This decade also saw the debut of the Karmann Ghia sports car, which featured a sleek, Italian-designed two-seater body atop a Beetle platform.
Volkswagen's star rose during the 1960s, its success fueled largely by the breakout success of the Beetle. The car benefited from an effective advertising campaign and from an appearance in a popular Disney movie. By the close of the decade, Volkswagen's yearly output of Beetles topped the 1 million mark.
In 1972, with more than 15 million units assembled, the Beetle topped the world production record set by Ford's Model T. Mid-decade saw the launch of a new era of Volkswagens that had front-mounted, water-cooled engines driving the front wheels. The Passat (Dasher in the U.S.) was the first of the new breed and was built using standardized components that could be used interchangeably among other models in the manufacturer's lineup. The Passat was soon joined by the Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.), which met with immediate success. By the end of the decade, the manufacturer's lineup had grown to include the Scirocco sport coupe and the performance-oriented Golf/Rabbit GTI. The Beetle, however, was discontinued for the U.S. market.
The Golf grew in popularity during the '80s, becoming Volkswagen's most popular model. When a second generation of the car was built in 1983, it was crafted in a mostly automated process using robots -- marking the first time robots had been used in vehicle manufacture. By the mid-'80s, the U.S. version traded the Rabbit name for "Golf." The higher-performance Golf GTI helped the manufacturer make waves on the rally circuit. In 1986, Volkswagen Motorsport nabbed the title of Group A World Rally Champions.
Volkswagen saw its sales in the North American market tumble during the early '90s, but by the end of the decade, refocused marketing efforts and an increased emphasis on new products had brought about a turnaround in the company's fortunes. The popular New Beetle helped put the company back on the radar in the United States (though it fared less successfully in European markets). The body style was based on the classic Beetle, and it struck a chord with consumers who still had a place in their hearts for the iconic, cheerful-looking "love bug."
The new millennium saw Volkswagen moving into the luxury segment with the launch of the pricey Phaeton sedan and Touareg SUV. Though well-designed and executed, the Phaeton was a disappointment sales-wise, perhaps signaling unwillingness on the part of consumers to shell out premium dollars for a brand that lacks the cachet of established upscale names like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Luckily, Volkswagen has seen success with other vehicles in its lineup, which currently includes everything from family-oriented sedans to roomy SUVs. Today, the automaker enjoys a reputation for crafting vehicles that offer refined handling and upscale accommodations.

R32 Review - 2004 Volkswagen R32
By williekatt - May 26 - 10:00 amI was in the market for a fun to drive sports car in the $30k price range. I was going to trade in my 01 Mustang GT which had plenty of after market go fast parts on it. I still wanted a car that accelerated strong but handled better than the Mustang. I test drove the STI and the Mits. Evo, liked them both, although I thought their interiors were cheap and 4 doors doesnÂ’t look sporty. Then I drove the R32 and feel in love. It doesnÂ’t have the acceleration of the Sti or Evo but makes up for it in build quality, refinement and overall style. After 1000 miles I clocked a 0 to 60 run of 6.4 sec (with my Escort G-Timer) and that was without a hard launch.

Touareg Review - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By Charm - May 26 - 10:00 amthis is a cool car to own. ive enjoyed driving it all over the place here in california--l.a., santa cruz, san diego-- as well as off-road, through rivers, mud, rocky terrain. it has performed very well. the downside is that it requires premium gas (which does not go very far), and the oil changes are over $100 dollars (every 5000 miles). i would recommend the v8 model because the car is really heavy and the v6 seems to struggle a little b/c of all the weight.

Rattlebox - 2004 Volkswagen Passat
By Lemonbuyer - May 26 - 10:00 amPurchased new.. dashboard started rattling 1 week after we took delivery. Has been in shop 11 times for that problem alone. Trim moldings come unstuck, we just stick them back on. VW couldnt care less. Consulted a lemon lawyer - not defined as a lemon cause rattle is not considered a defect. What a sad joke. We tried to trade this car in on a Toyota and the best trade price we were offered was $13,500. Pathetic resale and now I know why. Its a heap of junk! I dont know how we are going to sell it privately with a loud rattle in the dashboard! Were going to cut our substantial losses and kiss VW goodbye.

Do Not Buy This Car!!!! - 2004 Volkswagen Jetta
By very disapointed - May 26 - 10:00 amI bought my car two months ago and it has been a disaster. In the first month a vibration started in the steering column and the foot pedals, seats and doorsills. Took it in and the dealer said live with it. Then the transmision was having trouble; again they said live with it..vibration still there...then they said the turbo charger had a problem..but they didnt fix it ..just deleted the code from the cpu. I am not gonna live with it...no one should. Finally it was admitted to me that there were three problems..but that was on their final repair attempt. what a coincidence!

e-Golf is an unreliable nightmare - 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf
By John Smith - May 26 - 1:11 amThis car does not charge properly. The range is a complete lie. It might be able to go 50 miles on a charge - nowhere near the range of the lie on the sticker. Acceleration is abysmal. I had a leaf that I traded in and am so sorry I did. VW has been a complete nightmare to deal with. Both the dealership and horrible people at VW customer service. If you want a crappy car that will leave you stranded, from a horrible company, you should immediately get an e-Golf.

Still a Good Car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By TSmith - May 25 - 9:36 amI have owned my Jetta Wagon for 8 years now and have 115k miles on it. This has been a good car. I tend to drive cars into the ground and have completed this mission with several Toyotas... so I know good cars. I have had a few problems with the plastic handles on the glove box and arm rest. They have been replaced. The door seal tends to freeze the door shut when left over night in very cold weather. Other than these small problems this has been a carefree car. I know two other people that own this same wagon and they have had the same luck with their cars that I have with mine. Consumer Reports did a very poor job of reviewing this car. I would recommend this car.

My Cabrio ~ fun without headaches! - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio
By Martha - May 25 - 3:36 amIve had sooo many hours of fun in this zippy little convertible. Love the 5 speed transmission, lots of fun to drive. After 96000 miles, I can honestly say this car has been a dream in that it required only regular routine maintenance (oil changes, scheduled tuneups), & at about 60000 miles it needed a new muffler/pipe, & at 95000 miles two belts showed wear so I replaced them & (preventatively) the timing belt. Other than that, this car has just taken care of itself. :) The seats are a little small for someone with a bigger fanny, but otherwise comfy. The covering on the interior door handles peeled early on and i was not happy with how VW handled that. But that was the only glitch.

You Gotta Get One!! - 2007 Volkswagen EOS
By EosToni - May 24 - 8:00 pmI have never driven a car that has sparked more conversations or more compliments! Anytime I put the top up or down in public I hear "Aww cool" and "Wow!" and "Where can I get one of those!" Its been amazing. Everyone from every walk of life cant help but smile when they see it drive by. My kids love it as well. Its so great that all 3 can sit comfortably and still enjoy a convertible. The back seats are the most spacious of any Ive test driven and believe me thats a lot of cars.
