This Year's Model Updates:

The Touareg's standard V6 engine goes from 220 hp to 240 hp. The optional navigation system will change from CD-based to DVD-based later in the model year. The formerly standard tire-pressure monitoring system is now optional, and satellite radio is available across the board. A self-dimming rearview mirror debuts this year, along with newly styled 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Awesome SUV - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

We did much research before buying our Toureg.... After looking at a lot of different SUVs this was by far the best choice for towing and a luxury vehicle. We have been so happy with this car and have recommended it to so many other people. Our friends even bought a Touareg off our recommendation and have also been very happy. Yes the gas mileage is not the best, but we didnt expect to get the best gas mileage for this car, if we wanted that, we would have looked at a high bread vehicle instead. The power in this car is great and makes a great tow vehicle. It is very comfortable and we have not had any issues with it at all expect to take it in to fix the radio, (re-boot it).

In the past 16 months we have had too many electrical problems to count; not to mention off the top of my head: 6 radio changes, many wood panel replacements (they crack in the heat & cold - go figure) a leaking moon roof, the power windows have no power at the moment, a squeak in the wheel that the service department "cant figure out", the computer system for the car reads one thing and the service department says another. We have had no luck or help from VW USA - they have "been reviewing the case" for months, no one ever calls us back after promising to do so. Dont not buy this car - i am trading it in tonight for a Ford Explorer - at least at Ford they call me back. Good riddance!

  • Love it, but... - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I purchased my VW new with only 13 miles on it. I have to say, I love this car, I like how it drives and the pure power. The only down side are the brakes and tires. I had the first set of tires replaced at 8700 miles under the tire warranty, I still had to pay $220.00. Then the brakes at 15000 miles, that was $600.00. Now at 27000 miles I need another set of tires. For some reason the car loves to wear out the tires. I take it to the VW dealer every 5000 miles for its oil change and tire rotation. So a car that is two years old with 27000 miles has a new set of brakes and rotors, and on its third set of tires. Be prepared to spend some money!

  • Buy new or used, its awesome! - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

Bought this SUV 10/05 after looking at MB500. VW is so much quieter. No problems in 18k miles! I love this vehicle and its durability, wear and tear. Everyone who has sat in it wants to borrow it when additional space is needed - theyd buy but cant afford it. Great family car - whether you have kids or just a dog like me! So much fun in the winter and summer! Definitely will buy another after this hits higher miles.

The bug was fun, but the SUV is luxury. All the bells and whistles, plus towing at 7,500 lbs! Great on the highway and in town. Fuel cost is the ONLY drawback. The rain sensitive wipers are really nice. Buy one.

The car went back to dealer two times; one time was the oil change, the other was to ask the question of the restrictor in the fuel tank neck. I havent experienced any scary stuff that have been post on this review. Except the clock gain one minute a day and the dealer doesnt know how to fix it.

We are very happy with our SUV. It not only does it do well off-road, it is exceptional in the city. We park it on the street and are confident in its safety and reliabilty.

I like the Touareg. It has been very reliable and has lots of luxury items that would have cost an extra $20,000 in a BMW or a MercedesBenz.

I like the way the touareg handles and looks. My main problem is all the things that have been going wrong with it.It has been back at dealership a total of 4 times already(for a total of 13 days),and Ive only had it for just under 5 months. Everything from electrical problems to the door handle becoming stuck and unable to be opened. Not what you would expect from a $.45,000 vehicle

  • From an A6 to a Touareg - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I have to admit, the wife and I stuggled with the idea of going from an A6 to a Touareg. To me, an SUV has always been the equivalent to owning a mini-van, but with a house and a dog (who destroyed the backseat of our A6 - - he didnt know any better), we decided to give an SUV a try. After looking at all of the options we decided to give the Touareg a try and aside from the HORRIBLE fuel economy, weve been quite impressed. Great looking, comfortable, head-turning, and a spot for Mickey (the dog) to hang out without worry.
