This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Underrated All The Way. - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Ive had the Touareg for 7 months now but I still feel in awe walking up to it and getting in. Its a beautiful vehicle. It handles really well. Its cornering, breaking, and acceleration (with the Tiptronic transmission) are great. Two things Id like to address: 1. its fuel economy isnt that bad on the V6. If you compare it to other SUVs youre getting just about the same if not better MPG than an Explorer or even a 4Runner. 2. It is agile. The reason why it feels sluggish at times is due to the fact that it goes to the 6th gear almost immediately. I see my car in 5th gear entering the freeway; of course it wont have any torque. Learn to downshift. It has awesome features, apples to apples its the best value ever!

  • Solid performing SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

This has been a great SUV. I read a lot of disgruntled reviews which you would expect to see on this site, but my experience has been satisfying with this truck after driving it for four years. I use it to tow a race car each month and it has great towing power. I havent had any of the electrical or tire issues like others - I regularly rotate and align the vehicle which has definitely helped. Put new tires on at 25K miles. This SUV also performs extremely well in the snow or winter driving conditions with its AWD system. If considering the V6 vs. the V8, stop considering and immediately get the V8. This SUV is way too heavy for the V6 and MPG difference is nominal.

  • Squealing Brakes - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Lemon!!! As unbelievable as it may sound, I am in lemon law arbitration. After four attempts to repair the rear brakes from squealing...not just squeaking....VW wants to analyze the front pads. A stall tactic that has resulted in me hiring an attorney. Just beware!! I was told there are three other consumers at this dealereship experiencing the same problem.

the best suv ive ever owned

This SUV is still great. It handles curves like a sports car, its as quiet and smooth as a Lincoln Town Car (which I used to drive), and has plenty of room in the front (I am 65"). I knew the V6 would lack power going in, and while it is sluggish from a dead stop, this vehicle effortlessly does 100 mph. I routinely drive it at 90 for a 50 mile freeeway stretch and the engine is just purring at 3000 to 3200 rpm. Even at these speeds, I have been getting anywhere from 16.7 to 17.2 mpg between re-fuels. Only maintenance required has been routine oil changes/tire rotations.

As an owner of four previous SUVs, this by far is the best one I have owned (including a Range Rover)! The only beef one can have is with the gas mileage...my F150 actually gets better gas mileage! Other than that, the car is a dream in every respect.

  • Still love it after 10K miles - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

I made myself wait to write a review because I wanted to make sure the initial euphoria had worn off. Its been 10,000 miles in 6 months - and Im still loving this car ! I took it off-road on several occasions in remote areas of SW Texas. I was not only on tough dirt roads - but also literally off-road. The Touaregs ground clearance and low gear gave me plenty of confidence to handle steep hills, ruds and holes - standing water and mud. I just didntdare drive it through thick brush as I am still feeling a bit protective of the nice paint job.
