This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

This is simply a finely engineered vehicle. The ride and handle of a luxury vehicle, space of an SUV, interiors like that of a custom cabin cruiser. There’s a lot to like here. The exterior could use a better shape, however, the available colors do make for a great looking vehicle. The placement of interior components is well thought out and standard features were generous.

  • Its a Lemon - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I loved this truck when I test drove it. Thats when the love ended. From day one of driving it off the lot it has been in the shop for 50+ days for everything from brakes to electrical problems to a dangerous swirving that occurs when going from 1st to 2nd gear. The interior is cheaply made as buttons wear down after only a year. Ive applied for the lemon law. Make sure you get all problems documented. VW gave me hassle. Do not buy this vehicle! It is the worst buy Ive ever made.

The first week I had the SUV the electronic instruments went out. It took VW a week to get the new computer in. Since then they had to replace the stepper motor to control the 4 wheel drive. The stepper motor had to be ordered and that took a week. All tires had to be replace because of alignment problems. Door handles had to be replaced. The horn had to be replaces. The rear window wipers did not work.

Owned since Jan 2004. New off ship. Just had to replace engine at 43k. Cost $15k. VW of America and Germany no help. Constant electrical issues with car. (think that was the reason for the blown engine--faulty warning system). Poor gas mileage, tire wear, dealerships will admit they are a problem. Check VW LEMONS on the net to see how many problems with the Touareg. Springfield Imports in Missouri were zero help. I have had 4 VWs but never ever again. I think the people that say how great the car is want to convince themselves they made a good decision. I admit it. I made a dumb mistake paying about $50,000 for the Touareg.

I have owned my 2004 Volkswagen Touareg V6 for 18 months. I am looking for a way out due to being stuck on the side of the road 6 times with my small children. It is not reliable at all!! The Touareg is great to drive, when it drives, which isnt often. It has been in for service for sooo much stuff and I have had very bad service experiences! Unbelievable experiences! I am afraid to drive it with my kids. I dont trust this vehicle.

Just got back from a 5,000 mile trip with parts of it through the Arizona desert. This car with the V8 will keep up with any traffic. None of the "gee I wish this trip was over." The car was so much fun to drive I wished we could keep going!!!!!

  • LOVE IT! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I loved it from the first time I saw it and knew I had to have it. Its classy and has so many standard features. No others can compare. We got lots of snow this year and I am so impressed with its competency in all weather conditions. I have a very steep driveway and it walked right up, no problem.

Ive had the vehicle since January 04 and love to drive it. I have the V8 with nav and adjustable suspension. Great acceleration, great styling. Tows my 18 foot Ranger boat with no problem. Drawbacks are gas mileage (I get 13 city tops, and 17 or 18 highway), higher wind noise with sun roof open than I am used to, and a tendency to be abrupt when accelerating.
