This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • taureg reliability very poor - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

We purchased this vehicle because we wanted an excellent SUV for the hilly terrain of Southern Vermont. While it handles well in the flats, it is underpowered for steep hills and has had many many electrical problems. It is very complex and VW has not handled these issues well and the dealers do not have trained technicians to support the complex systems onboard. The tires were shot at 20,000 miles, the car spent many many days in the shop working out electrical problems. I reccomend that if you must have the Taureg, then buy the V8 as it has sufficient power and seems to have had less issues thn the six. I would not buy it again. The GPS does not perform well in back roads or off road.

  • An other week without my Touareg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I would not take this vehicle further than 10 miles from home because of reliability problems. Number of ignition coils, air bag, tire pressure, faulty gas cap, door locking problems, just to name a few. Last VW I will ever own!!

  • Think twice about the Touareg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

We bought the VW T, 8c, primarily looking for an SUV with the weight benefit for tax purposes (greater than 6k lbs.) The Touareg is great fun to drive, but the problems we have had with it, to date (9 months) have been RIDICULOUS. Started from day 1, when things were broken after getting back from the dealership. 3 different recall issues having to visit the service dealership. Dozens of little things, that are annoying and need to be fixed with service visits. Id advise against the Touareg at least until the 2005 model year... too many things wrong with the first model year here in the US. memo to VW.. work on service if you want to compete

  • Never again! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I like this car. Great features, good looks, good performance. What i hate is vw service. I do not think that vw was ready for the luxury level clientel. My car has been in the shop for more than a month in the 15 months ive owned it. Although there is full warranty but most items are not paid for. There have been numerous recalls. Going for a service is worse than going to a dentist. In conclusion although i like this car and enjoy driving it, the pains that i have been through with 4 different vw dealerships in los angeles area has made me vow to never again buy another vw, no matter how good the car might be.

  • Touareg LEMON - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I purchased a V6 Touareg last October and have had MULTIPLE problems with it. The keyless entry system does not always work. The homelink has been replaced, the computer board for the convenience menu failed. The brakes sound like an 18 wheeler. I had $400. mudflaps put on that are now stained from the bolts that hold them on that have rusted. The radio has a software problem that I am told that VW has no answers for and the CD player freezes at various tomes and you cannot get the cd out. I have contacted VW many times with no response. DO NOT BUY A VW, THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR LEMONS

  • Too Much for too Little - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

This truck is supposedly built on the Porsche Cayenne platform. It is okay, but it came from the factory with alignment problems that VW knew about, ignored, and refused to pay for. This ate up the crappy tires it came equipped with. It also has crappy brakes with poor stopping power despite ABS - Ive had many near misses. Buy a car the manufacturer stays behind. There are better options out there for the money.

  • Fisrt & Last VW - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

My VW experience has been horrible. I have finally given up on taking it back to the dealer for warranty issues because the problems are always there after the visit. Their response when I asked if they got everything taken care of was "couldnt duplicate the problem" or "onboard computer didnt show any issues." Well, let me tell you something, Im surprised that someone hasnt been killed (maybe they have and Im not aware) due to driving these defective vehicles. Specifically, I refer to pulling / merging into traffic and having it "fall on its nose" when you try to accelerate! This is my biggest issue with the vehicle, however I have also had all the malfunctioning warning signals, etc.

My car has been in the shop for 64 days now. the 2nd field engineer is being sent out to evaluate the situation. I have been told on 3 separate occasions my car is repaired and ready to pick up and when I get there is does not start. AC has been an issue since day 1. Alignment has also. I am not a happy VW Touareg owner!

  • Engine, Electrical & Tire Problems - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

AVOID ALL TOUAREG VEHICLES. Read the internet on how rotten VW support is. My T is driven gently by my wife. We go through a set of tires every year or so, have had many electrical problems including completely replacing the wiring harness. At 43,000 the engine simply froze. A couple months out of warranty for months owned but within the period for mileage. VW is giving us grief about replacing the engine. I guess they think that it is ok for an engine to blow at 40K. Dealers seem great but you have to deal with VW of America. They are simply terrible. I would look at the internet for VW problems and VWA support before buying ANY VW product. Sorry...I have owned 4 VWs but no more.

  • Not impressed with VW Toureg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

Not really impressed with the SUV for the price tag Acura MDX sounds much better. Brakes touchy, interior too complicated(Control Panel), Not enough storage space, Back seating is not specious as it should be, Trunk is tricky to open, due to its shape and the way of openning. Driving it is comfy but due to brakes being so tuchy it could be less fun on a big stop and go trafic. Not really satisfied with the vehicle
