Overview & Reviews
The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.
- Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
- Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

Dont pass up a chance to drive one! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By spockcat - July 12 - 10:00 amThis car is FAR, FAR superior to the 99 ML430 I traded in. The ride is absolutely awesome and smooth with the air suspension in comfort mode or nimble and quick in sport mode. The comfort of the Nappa leather is fantastic. The 310 hp Audi 40 valve V8 makes this a super highway cruiser. This is by far the best value SUV being sold today. These features in an Audi would cost you $10k more, and $20k more in the Porsche Cayenne.

excellent value - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By touaregfan - July 6 - 2:00 amIts been a (happy) month since I got my Touareg. The initial built quality is excellent. It looks much better (inside and out) than X5 and is a real SUV when compared to FX35. No major complaints so far.

All About Style - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By tosram - June 7 - 12:26 amSince I bought this car I have had two problems with it problems and now I need to turn it in for recalls (more than one). Repairs on this model are expensive.

Love this SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By fsonline - June 1 - 8:43 amIts surprising to me to see in a recent magazine that the Touareg is rated as a "vehicle to avoid." I find the build quality, the ride, the power, and the comfort all to be way above par, even over Passats, and Lexus LS400s Ive owned. All issues that I have had with this truck were immediatley handled by the dealership and resolved as expected...and as part of the new model (at the time,) experience. Its a shame that VW, a company with great ideas, is becoming a notch above their "niche" despite the results, which are superb.

Love the v-10....No belts or chains - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By LUKE - May 29 - 7:03 amThis has to be the best S.U.V. That i have ever drove. The fact that it has a fully geared engine is awesome!! To think the only vehicle like it, is a military vehicle. What a car

Its a shame - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By rwm - May 24 - 12:53 pmIts a shame the electronics are so bad. Its a shame the head lamps dont last very long. Its a shame you need a mortgage to pay for and oil change -- not to mention service in general. Its a shame the brakes dont last and require new rotors when changed. Its a shame nothing seems to get a complete fix. Its a shame VW didnt do a much better job on reliability.

Cant keep it running - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By rustyII - May 18 - 2:00 amIts been in the shop more time (almost) than in my garage. QC saddly lacking. Engine quits unexpectedly. 6-cylinder engine hopelessly underpowered, even going uphill at freeway speeds. The goofy transmission hunts and pecks endlessly to find the right gear and has to rev the engine very high to get where it wants to go. Styling doesnt wear well either. Its looking more like a typical bar-of-soap car every time I look at it. Even the leather is showing wear and tear and is beginning to look cheap. And this is only 6-months old!! VW should concentrate on making cheap bugs and stay out of marked segments where it doesnt belong.

Too Much for too Little - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
By JHK - May 16 - 6:53 amThis truck is supposedly built on the Porsche Cayenne platform. It is okay, but it came from the factory with alignment problems that VW knew about, ignored, and refused to pay for. This ate up the crappy tires it came equipped with. It also has crappy brakes with poor stopping power despite ABS - Ive had many near misses. Buy a car the manufacturer stays behind. There are better options out there for the money.
