This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

Handles like a sedan, precise steering, and great power. Drives better than an X5 - love the 4-wheel drive and diff locks; most luxurious interior for the buck. Too much steering wheel real estate taken up by 4 cruise control buttons that are rarely used. Owners manual is poor: some things are at odds with reality and the index is about as useful as LA freeway signs. Few accessories available yet.

The Touareg is a great SUV! The only problem is that VWs maintenance schedule at 40,000 miles requires a tune up ($500). Also about this time the brakes need to be replaced, which means pads, rotors and sensors (again all according to the dealership). That costs about $1,400. New tires about this time about $600 +/- oh yea and the (synthetic) oil change $80 sooo lets see I have to put about $2,500 in to a new SUV...what the heck?! I can buy a used beater for that money! If VW told me I was going to have to pay this price for maintenance..I would have told them to take a long walk off a short pier! I love my VW and have had no problems with it until this 40,000 maintenance but thats just because of the cost.

I am truely enjoying my Touareg. 17 MPG is what I am currently receiving, and I think that that may increase over time. I purchased the basic V6 model without any extras, and for a work vehicle, I can say that it is more than I expected. I am amazed about how many other drivers in Houston, are stopping to look at the vehicle. If VW would advertise more, I think that you would see additional Touaregs on the road.

Couldnt be happier. It also helps to have the worlds best VW dealer, "Sterling VW".

  • 2004 Volkswagen Touareg is $ out-of-control - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Purchased thinking I bought a $60000 car with 60000 miles. It should hold up till 100000 miles. Not even close. I had $4580.60 of repairs in 10 months. Plus the gas milage was about 10 mpg in town and about 15 mpg on the highway. I would never recommend a VW to anyone and would do my best to discourage anyone from buying one. Absolutely the worst car I have ever owned in my 55 years of driving. Replacing anything costs a fortune.

Been driving the V8 w/ air suspension since new. After 75K miles I still love it. Electrical/computer issues at the beginning, but dealership fixed them and no problems since. Yes it eats a lot premium gas, tires and brakes, but it is a high performance vehicle. The trim is a little too VWish and wearing out too quickly. Carving mountain roads with the air susp and Pirelli tires is very impressive. Handles winter weather better than Audi A6. If you are comfortable with high operating costs and not having the finest interior trim, this is great high performance value when compared to the Porche, Audi, BMW products.

  • taureg reliability very poor - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

We purchased this vehicle because we wanted an excellent SUV for the hilly terrain of Southern Vermont. While it handles well in the flats, it is underpowered for steep hills and has had many many electrical problems. It is very complex and VW has not handled these issues well and the dealers do not have trained technicians to support the complex systems onboard. The tires were shot at 20,000 miles, the car spent many many days in the shop working out electrical problems. I reccomend that if you must have the Taureg, then buy the V8 as it has sufficient power and seems to have had less issues thn the six. I would not buy it again. The GPS does not perform well in back roads or off road.

  • Fun to drive - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

This is a strong entry into the SUV segment for VW. I have my concerns about the long term quality considering the amount and complexity of the deployed electronics. Very fun to drive. Previously owned BMW X5 and the VW beats it in appeal both on-road and off-road
