This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • BEWARE: DO NOT BUY THIS SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I have had so many problems with this SUV. I had it for 8hrs and had to take it back into the shop. Since I bought it, it has been back to the shop 21 times. Now it is in the shop having the transmission replaced. Anything and everything that can break or go wrong with a vehicle has! The dealership refused to even try to fix it, saying that my imagination was running wild, that they could not find any problems. If you buy this SUV be prepared to fork out alot of cash for repairs because once the warranty goes out, then they will find enormous amounts of damage that you have to pay for, even if you have told them about the problems numerous times before. Please dont get suckered in like me!

  • A Joy To Drive - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I was initially hesitant to purchase a first year model, but I am very, very happy with this vehicle. VW has done an outstanding job with their first SUV. It is very well-built -- solid -- very comfortable to drive, and handles expceptionally well for a rather heavy mid-size. Negatives: In (D)rive, the trans shifting is a bit ragged at low speeds and slow acceleration; I drive in TripTronic or sport mode most of the time with no problem. (VW has already addressed the shifting issue with a softare upgrade that Ill have installed soon.)

superb handling and performance is easily forgotten considering the problems its had. 15 months and 18k miles later it has been in the shop at least 8 times for more than 30 days. Service department was friendly but inept at fixing any of the electric malfunctions that plague this vehicle. I bought early and should have expected problems with the new model, but now 15 months later there is no excuse for not being able to fix the same issues I brought it in for within days of driving it off the lot. Do not buy one of these unless you have a satisfaction or money back guarantee from the dealer and at least 30 days to drive it before you pay.

  • What a truck - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

A lot of truck for the price. My friend has the Porche model, and when I compared the two, my truck looked exactly the same with more features and a $30,000 lower price tag. This truck has everything you could want and more.

  • BEST SUV ON THE ROAD! LOVE IT! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I brought my 2001.5 Passat in for a minor repair and left with the Touareg! Though I miss my Passat, the Touareg was well worth the trade. Were the 1st in our town to have one, & we still only see another Touareg on the road every now and then- but I know this best kept secret will be out soon and others will realize what theyre missing! You get a lot of curious and approving stares in this car!

  • Dream Car - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

After hearing my wife go on and on about wanting to upgrade her Jetta to a Touareg, I finally purchased her a used 2004 model with only 14,000 miles on it. I have to say this is by far the neatest vehicle on the road. It feels lke a Sherman tank, but is nimble, fun to drive, and gets a lot of attention. I would honestly say there is not another vehicle on the road that I would prefer, even if spending twice as much. VW did a phenominal job with their entry into the SUV market.

  • The Poor Mans Porsche - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Overall the car is excellent, but whenever you purchase a Touareg make sure the maintenance agreement is one purchased in the area where it will be serviced. Not all dealerships honor these agreements. Believe Me!!!!!!! One more thing, Volkswagon is still working out the kinks with all the computer chips installed in the vehicle, so you might have to visit the dealership a few times until these small annoyances are resolved.

  • Burns too much gas, but l LOVE it - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Havent had it very long, but it is the best designed SUV that I have seen or driven. I drove a Toyota Landcruiser in Africa on several occasions and loved it, but would have liked to have had this T-Reg. Only question in my mind is reliability. All these behemoths get poor gas mileage. We all should have known this when we purchased these heavyweights! Navigation system could use some software changes to make it more like what I have seen in Toyota/Lexus vehicles. The dealer told me Navigation software upgrades are coming. Not many automobiles make me want to go out into the garage to get one last look before going to bed, but this one does!!

  • Love the Touareg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Researched and test drove all the other mid-sized SUVs. Touareg was by far the best deal. Much better fit, finish and interior design than BMW, Mercedes or Lexus. V-8 gets over 19mpg on the highway with a full load. Could be better, but not bad considering vehicles weight and power. Love being behind the wheel of this vehicle. Amount of features are unreal for the price. NAV coiud be better, but gets me where Im going. Fantastic ride and handling. Luxury car quiet. No problems at all with my vehicle. Dealer has been the best Ive ever dealt with. Everyone that sees my Touareg is amazed by the quality and ride and immediately want one!
