This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

My wife loves her Touareg. It has a great interior, is roomy and plenty of pep.

I would have chosen another ML 350 but for dealer attitude, they insist on navigation systems and third row seating! Well I know where I live and I don’t plan on having kids. My first 1000 plus miles in Mr. Toe Rags tell me it’s a very nice vehicle. Gas consumption is OK at 17 mpg overall for 1057 miles but it does dip into the sixteen’s and fifteens around my short country commute to work. Yes it’s thirstier than the Mercedes. Quiet and refined it does not get buzzy at speed and it goes fast enough to get expensive tickets. It is a smooth riding, fast performing easy to drive super utility vehicle.

  • Good Looking Manufacturer Buyback - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Factory Buyback. Our 2004 Touareg was great looking, great off-road (low-range rocks!) but was a miserable experience until the day VW (was forced) to buy it back: The V6 engine is weak and sucks down fuel. My new BMW X5 4.4i gets much better gas mileage. The Touareg had tire pressure monitoring failures from the day we bought it. We had trim and rattle problems, squealing rotors, remote lock/unlock issues, A/C windshield fogging problems, and a wiper blade that flew off in a rainstorm. 23 shops days in under 10,000 miles. After three repeat repair attempts and filing Lemon law, VW tried lawyering out of it until losing the arbitration. PS - I love my new BMW X5...Are you listening, Zieter?

Perfect vehicle for selling real estate in the mountains. Customers are comfortable and love it. Its a joy to drive. I chose the V6 even though the reviews said it would be sluggish. I havent found it to be sluggish at all. Has all the pick up and go that I need.

  • Touareg - Dont Buy It - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I have had the vehicle for approx 4 years. It has continuous problems. In the past 2 mos, I have driven it only 3 days, the remaining days it has been in the shop. The following has been "replaced" : the instrument control panel, cruise control system, back up sensor system, tire monitoring system, water reservoir & Drive Shaft. I have replaced brake pads & headlights. There is a noise the dealer cannot find. It has lost computer modules, so the entire computer system was erased and reloaded twice. If you are thinking about purchasing this vehicle do not do it. I have been paying for a Touareg and driving a loaner Jetta. This is one high priced Jetta.

  • Frequent Repairs - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

My SUV trinks! The dealership drives it more than I do. It is in the shop almost every month. I have had the front axle replaced, window shades replaced twice, cruise control, airbags repaired, air conditioner motor and fan replaced three times, all the keypads for controls on the dash have peeled off and on the door handle. The navigation is not touch screen, only dial. This is car definitely a LEMON!

  • A less expensive Cayenne - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

The Touareg rides like a dream, especially with the air suspension. Capable of going off-road, but built to comfortably navigate the concrete jungle of the real world. Adequate pick-up with smaller engine. Gas mileage is slightly better than advertised (still not great). The driving experience is fantastic! Fahrfenugen on and off road. The interior is extremely well designed. From the rear window shades to the driver and passenger visors - motoring concerns have been carefully examined and re-examined.
