This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Great fun but suspect electronics - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

We love how this car handles and performs. The engine is responsive and the ride is quiet. The nav system is easy to use. Fabulous in the snow. Down sides: The flat tire sensor has been replaced twice because of persistent failures. The battery cable was replaced. Note that this car has a battery that cant be jump started or used to jump others. A stepper motor for the power steering was replaced because it was causing seize ups on tight turns. Overall Id say this will be a great short term car, but the reliability for this first year model is low and Im glad were leasing it just for the length of the warranty.

  • The Best SUV Ive Ever Seen - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I feel very sorry for the people who grossly overpaid for the Cayenne, X5, and ML 500. The Touareg is an incredible car for an even more incredible value. It features the chassis of Porsche and the engine and interior styling of Audi. Quite simply, it is the best SUV out there. This is just the beginning of great things to come from Volkswagen!

Ive had my Touareg for the last three weeks. This last weekend we took it up the side of a mountain in CO -- literally! This car is even more awesome than they make it look. I have the V6 at high altitude and it definelty has the power to do almost anything youll want it to do! I havent even began to push it near its limits and it keeps taking everthing I throw its way!

  • What a fun vehicle to drive! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

This vehicle is practically unbeatable - assuming you have the V8 and air suspension option. The ride is smooth and unbelievably quiet, and the V8 gives you TONS of power to accelerate. And its a 6 speed automatic so all the power is easily reachable when you hit the pedal. I test drove the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano, Buick Rendezvous, Lexus RX300, BMW X5, Mercedes M500, Volvo XC90 T6, Porsche Cayenne S, Range Rover, Cadilac SRX, Acura MDX and Infinty FX45 (as well as a bunch of 30- 50K sedans) and I love the Touareg the most.

  • Drivers Wanted - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

All VWs are cars for Drivers. Touareg is no exception. One needs a Driving skill and focus to appreciate this car. The V8 is so powerful that a gentle but precise push on gas in needed to roll it from stop (the so- called "hesitation" problem). The ride is so quiet that air is heard flowing off vents. And one needs to buckle up before switching the ignition and fix tire pressure between weather seasons. These pretty much cover for the "lemon" issues. Then just Drive! This Car is amazing to Drive!

Had this SUV for a month. Its been to the shop twice already. Ride is comfortable not enough power. Go with the V8. I was displeased with the sales staff at the location where I purchased the vehicle. I caught the sales staff in a few different lies. Lame, just sell the car.

The Touareg has an excellent feel for the road. It is comfortable and spacious. The car does offer a real offroad ability and easily manages city potholes and traffic. The negatives are that you must get use to the large rear headrest that seemingly block your rearview and the gas mileage. Also there is a little vibration sound from the sunroof. None of these factors are so bad that I would not have bought the car again. Though I may have bought the V8 or V10.

  • More than expected for the money - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

With all of the options that come with the Suv, I couldnt compare the price with all that I have on the Tourage verses with the BMW, Lexus & Volvo. Very Roomy in the front and backseat. Wish that it had a 3rd row option and better gas mileage, A in dash disk player would be nice as well! The interior and the drive of this SUV feels as if you had paid for a top dollar SUV and in fact, I didnt! Very eye catchy and I get alot of compliments!

We bought this T-reg with 7K miles from fleet use. We are very glad we bought the extended warranty, as this car has required over $6K in repairs over the last year. Finally traded it in this week with 97K miles on the odometer. This vehicle performed well in all weather and road conditions. We live in Minnesota where the snow and ice can come quick and strong, and the T-reg could handle all conditions, with good style and comfort. The V6 is a bit underpowered for a vehicle this heavy, but we did not do any towing, so we were OK. There was not enough room in the drivers seat for my 62" frame, so I would frequently get uncomfortable on long drives. Reliability problems are bad.
