This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • A great SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Still love the truck after 5 years owning it. Only 2nd set of tires with a lot of tread left after 75000 mi. 1st set of tired was replaced at 48000mi. Still original brake. Replaced battery at 70000mi. One annoying issue was airbag light lit after my wife adjusted driver seat. Check engine light was lit once for no reason but cleared after a visit to the dealer. didnt come back for 2yr but lit again last week. beautiful interior (better than my BMW 5 and MB E class), fit and finish is top notch. gas mileage is poor but not so bad for a performance SUV. feel very safe driving it, great road manner, very solid, no rattling, no loose parts. took to the beach played sand, a very fun SUV.

  • BEWARE!!! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Oh, to have the decision back on whether to buy this thing. Well, I got ripped on this one. The Touareg has to be the worst value out there. Let me start with the transmission. Press the pedal half way down and it doesnt move, press a tiny bit more and it throws you in the back seat. Its impossible to drive in stop and go situations. Besides the cheap brakes pads (unbelievable amounts of brake dust), stopping is an adventure as well. Both front seats squeak already and its very top heavy. I bought a 2004 that MSRP at 51,000 for 40,000 and I cannot get rid of it after 6 months. The value drops like a rock due to the recalls, electronic problems and engine. Many recalls. STAY AWAY from it.

THE RACKS ON THE TOP OF CAR MAKE NOISE SO BAD IT SOUNDS LIKE THE CAR IS ABOUT TO FALL APART. THE VIBRATIONS ARE OVERWHELMING. TAKE THE RACKS OFF AND THE TOUAREG LOOKS BAD. NO HELP FROM DEALERSHIP ON THIS MATTER. NAVIGATION SYSTEM PAID FOR BUT NO CDS.. ALL WE GET ARE EXCUSES.. HAD CAR SINCE DECEMBER 2003.

  • Love / Hate of a V10 TDI Touareg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

The 2004 Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI is an absolute blast to drive, the V10 engine can only be described as a torque monster. Throw in mid-20s for gas mileage and you have a great package. But...the thing has been back to the dealership every other month for a host of recurring and random problems ranging from repeated air bag faults to vibrations to interior trim that cracks in cold temperatures to power loss at speed. Needless to say, a great package has been marred by a dreadful reliability record. Unfortunately I cant tolerate the lack of reliability, so I must say goodbye to the torque monster.

  • Good Compromise - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I test drove the Aviator, FX35, and the Volvo all are comparably priced. The VW does not have as much power as the FX or Aviator but has more room than the FX. Aviator comes standard with 3rd row and I didnt need that. The Volvo has just got no pep and is very boring to drive. I am very happy with my choice.

After only a week---very quiet, comfortable ride. Superb interior appointments with extensive convience and comfort features. Power adequate, 6 speed auto is smooth. On the highway 2800 rpm=80mph. Basic sound system is of high quality and A/C is excellent. Reliability evaluation is only a guess since my car is brand new and the model has no history.

I was hesitant to trade in my 00 Discovery II but after I saw and drove my new Touareg I told them to take old yeller out back and get it over with. Awesome car, I havent been this excited about anything in years. Im even thinking of getting rid of my Boxster!

the gas mileage sucks but if what youre looking for is a brilliantly constructed luxury car with a big trunk, room for 4 and a convincing sport- ute visage,vw has done it........
