This Year's Model Updates:

The Touareg's standard V6 engine goes from 220 hp to 240 hp. The optional navigation system will change from CD-based to DVD-based later in the model year. The formerly standard tire-pressure monitoring system is now optional, and satellite radio is available across the board. A self-dimming rearview mirror debuts this year, along with newly styled 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

I did a little research before purchase. The problems some people were experiencing were frightening. After a test drive I was hooked. The only problems Ive had was to replace windshield wipers and balance 19" tires. Oh, console squeaks a little when the cockpit is cold. Driven to Florida from Texas effortlessly at high rate of speed (two speeding tickets). Excellent vehicle 8600 miles and counting. If you are considering this vehicle invest in radar detector. The Touareg is a joy to drive.

I love my Touareg, this is the fifth VW that I have owned. I have moved up a little bit each time. I started out with a Beetle and now own a Touareg. I love to drive it. People stop me all the time and ask if they can look in it. They cant believe that VW makes a SUV that look that good and has so many options standard. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a SUV.

I was initially very pleased with my Touareg, but poor reliability, $99 oil changes, and many many invasive warnings are starting to wear me down. Recalls and expensive maintenance aside, its actually the overengineering thats causing me the most frustration. The warnings are loud and intrusive. Pull into a parking lot and undo your seat belt to prepare for a meeting, and the warning beeps for 5 minutes every 30 seconds or so. Outside temp drops below 40, ding, low fuel, ding, tire pressue drops, ding. The range on the remote is also very poor. Just another nit pick, but all of these collective items make it very difficult to recommend this vehicle

  • All Hype and Big Let Down - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I bought the 05 Touareg off a dealer lot thinking I was saving money on a loaded Luxury SUV with 6,000 miles on it. The first night in my garage the battery died and the key was stuck in the ignition. Then a couple of weeks later the sunroof leaked. Then I noticed moisture in the rear tail light. The SUVs engine sounds rough at low speeds and the disc brakes grab to a startling stop. Oh, and the tires, be ready to replace them at about 15,000 miles. Now for the worst part, the gas mileage, LOL. You better be prepared for a shock there. I averaged 10.75 mpg city and 14 Hwy! Now you ask, why did you buy it? All impulse and the ride is nice, but VW has a sub par product here for a lot of money.
