This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • I hate my car - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Reading the other negative reviews before I started mine made me feel vindicated. The dealership made me feel like I was nuts. The transmission is terrible - going around curves slowly the car bucks like a bronco, and God forbid I have to take my foot off the gas pedal. Once in awhile for no reason, the transmission will make a loud "clunking" noise like Ive just run over something. It scares me to death and then of course makes me furious. I have had nothing but trouble with the electrical system; if I believed the displays Ive had braking problems, tire pressure issues, etc. FYI - dont expect the tires to last to 20K miles. Plus, this is the "beepiest" car Ive ever owned! YUCK!

Reliability of this car STINKS!Mine completely broke down after 2 weeks ownership.A friend had complete electrical failure after 1 month. They do not have the quality testing measures and facilities to make this car reliable! VW customer service is HORRENDOUS.The car has been stuck at an LA dealership for 2 weeks now!Not 1 customer service representative has contacted me after I have made 10 calls.Calls to headquarters, the dealership, etc have all been ignored.Trust me, pay a little more for a BMW 4.4. This car is not proven and will be plagued with unreliability and poor customer service- 2 traits you dont want together!

  • THINK TWICE - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

What a beautiful sporty suv that really hauls and is fun to drive. But be very wary, I have this car for almost 2 years and only have a little over 11,000 miles and I have had the suv in the shop more times than any other car I have owned. We have the 19" high performance sport tires, well at 8,000 miles we had to spend over $1,200 on new tires, the wood interior has cracked two times; the rear lights have been replaced twice due to condensation, the air suspension has gone twice leaving me with a $56,000 low rider. All in all I have been very displeased with the mechanical and lack of fuel efficiency. Once our lease is over we will never purchase another VW again. I am tired of loaners.

  • Poor Tire Performer - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I have been disappointed with my vehicle since I purchased it. The tire sensor is on regularly, even after numerous repairs. The tires wear quickly and are expensive. Rotating every three months is a most. The interior wears poorly also. The door panels, garage opener panel have rubbed off from use. The wood look panels have cracked. Not a good buy.

This truck has had frequent, repetitive breakdowns associated with the powertrain. The interior trim, though attractive is too fragile. The service is very poor and you should be prepared to wait many weeks for parts. I sure miss my Acura MDX.

  • Do Not Buy It! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

My Touareg has been the worst vehicle that Ive had ever. It has been a constant visitor to the service department for recalls, campaigns, alignments, all sorts of warning lights coming on, over 45 days in service - engine has been removed twice to replace parts gone bad. I am going for the Lemon Law - BAD BAD BAD - especially for the price! this truck has received many terrible reviews throughout the web. It gets terrible gas mileage. I cant imagine how much this truck would cost someone who owned it after the warranty had expired. I have heard that Volkswagen is buying back a lot of Touaregs.

  • bad decision - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Always drove BMW, fell in love with new Touareg design - big mistake to buy with emotion!!! 3 weeks and 528 miles later the car has been in the shop for cd player, alignment pulling to the right, gas gauge not registering correctly. I am horrified to read all these stories about the level of service. My rental car is a ford focus, with roll down windows!

  • Poor Quality - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

Purchased on a Sat. afternoon. Within the 20 mile home I already had problems. First the heated seats didnt work, the CD player broke, the head lights were not aligned correctly, the steering wheel was not top centered. The car had a bad shake at 70 MPH and pulled to the right. After I got home I noticed paint discoloration on the lift gate. I did more research online and found this to be a problematic vehicle. See club touareg.com. It is filled with horror stories of poor quality, numerous breakdowns, and little available parts to fix your vehicle. I brought it back to the dealer I bought mine from on Monday and got my money and trade-in back.

  • BEWARE!!! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Oh, to have the decision back on whether to buy this thing. Well, I got ripped on this one. The Touareg has to be the worst value out there. Let me start with the transmission. Press the pedal half way down and it doesnt move, press a tiny bit more and it throws you in the back seat. Its impossible to drive in stop and go situations. Besides the cheap brakes pads (unbelievable amounts of brake dust), stopping is an adventure as well. Both front seats squeak already and its very top heavy. I bought a 2004 that MSRP at 51,000 for 40,000 and I cannot get rid of it after 6 months. The value drops like a rock due to the recalls, electronic problems and engine. Many recalls. STAY AWAY from it.

  • BEWARE: DO NOT BUY THIS SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

I have had so many problems with this SUV. I had it for 8hrs and had to take it back into the shop. Since I bought it, it has been back to the shop 21 times. Now it is in the shop having the transmission replaced. Anything and everything that can break or go wrong with a vehicle has! The dealership refused to even try to fix it, saying that my imagination was running wild, that they could not find any problems. If you buy this SUV be prepared to fork out alot of cash for repairs because once the warranty goes out, then they will find enormous amounts of damage that you have to pay for, even if you have told them about the problems numerous times before. Please dont get suckered in like me!
