This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Touareg destined for Offroad - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

We purchased our Touareg with the intent of using it as a true SUV/SAV. It was for my wife to haul the kids around town, for us to go camping with, and for me to take offroad with my Jeep Friends. The air suspension is AMAZING and the torque the V6 puts out has kept me up with the best of them. Fear of scratching the paint is the ONLY think that keeps me from going some places. Ive been offroad on SEVERAL Difficult rated course throughout southern Califonia and the TRex will NOT let you down. Many Pictures with two wheels in the air and still moveing forward in a straight line! And the BRAKES!!! DAMN!!!

Looks like the Porsche at 1/3 less.

  • Audi/Porsche luxury SUV for a bargain! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Buy one before the word gets out! Audi 4.2L 305HP engine (same as A8), Porsche 6 speed, Audi-grade interior, 10 air bags with safety cage, etc... This car with the same configuration in Germany sells for 68k Euro, which translates to $75-80k! You can pick one up for about $40k in the US! This SUV drives like a dream. The V8 with 6-speed is silky smooth and throws you back in your seat when you push it. If you want a super luxury SUV that should sell for $75k at the bargain price of the century, act now!!! And by the way, purchase a 100k warranty for around $1500, and have no reservations!

Spent the last week driving my folks new Touareg V8 and couldnt say enough to really do it justice. I ordered my own today with the V10 TDI scheduled for production early November and delivery for January. Went with the V10 TDI for better fuel economy (24 mpg on the HWY) and increased torque for pulling my boat. Besides, the V10 TDI has won several international awards for its engineering.

The doors on the car do not always close when shut and remain ajar about 50% of the time, unless slammed really hard. Some of the door handles are also remaining in the open position (or out) when released. This also causes the doors to not shut properly. The automatic shifting doesnt always shift into the 6th gear under all circumstances. It will shift into 6th gear if the shifter is moved ( to the right) into the shiftable transmission mode. Overall if the longterm relaibility is excellent Id buy another Touareg. Bob Mc Vermont

Saw several last year in Europe just as the model was being launched--love at first sight. I couldnt wait for it to hit these shores. Handsome exterior, flawless interior, outstanding build quality, superb handling, reasonable performance from the V6...this car is brilliantly executed in every way. I enjoy the looks I get from other drivers!

  • Best SUV for the $$$ - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

If you want a quality, power, quietness this car is for you...Do not get the V6, spend the money and get the V8...overall better return when you sell the car, and one of the fastest SUVs on the road...Considered LexusRX330, what a dog, if you are over 50 get a LEXUS, if you want great fun, power and luxury get a V8 Toureg..Also considered InfinitiFX45, what a bumpy ride, and a cheap build interior..finally, looked at CAYENNE V6 (base model), Toureg V8 has double the option and 15K cheaper...if you have the money and must get a CAYENNE than get the Turbo...best car I have ever owned and drived..job well done for VW.

  • Navi kills the CD Player - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I love the car, but VW swung and missed in regard to the CD player. No indash changer, no option to purchase XM or MP3 player, and if you use the Navi system, you can only listen to CDs via the cargo-area mounted 6-disk changer.

The only issue is xenon lights are very expensive. I had changed one recently and it was more than $230 . The car is wonderful to drive and comfortable, also safe.Gas mileage is good.
