This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Superior SUV - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Its exterior styling and its towing capacity sealed my purchase, despite concern over Volkswagens reliability reputation. Now 2 mos. old with 2,000 miles - so far, no major problems. I do believe that there is significant room for improvement - The location of the cd changer is a joke, $850 for the towing package is a steep price, very poor control layout on the steering wheel, navagation system is terrible, climate control doesnt function well. My vehicle was delivered with a front license plate bracket riveted onto the front bumper and Im still arguing with the dealership on the removal and repair.

I love my new VW, the dealer Foreste & Brown VW, Noblesville, Fishers, Anderson, Muncie, Indiana was wonderful! They even delivered my Touareg to my home, they took care of everything, all I had to do was enjoy my new SUV!!!

  • WOW! Me in an SUV... - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Our V8 Touareg is amazing. As an ex SCCA road racer (National Level) I can testify that its brakes are as good as it gets. Handling is great and so is available power. We have covered 7K miles and since a "Check Engine" light issue early on the vehicles been perfect. Ive driven a second Touareg equipped with Dunlop tires (mine has Continentals) and my Touareg is far more well behaved (quieter, more comfortable, etc.)

  • As advertized! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I only had the vehicle for three days when I finally took it off-road. Nothing too extreme, just a bit of a test. It handled "as advetized". And it is a pleasure to drive on payment as well. Looks great and fun to drive.

  • Volkswagens First Audi - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I currently own an Audi A6 and need to buy a SUV that was over 6000lbs (GVW) for my business so I can take the Bush tax write-off. My Audi dealer tried to persuade me to go with the Porsche Cayenne, but I didnt like the interior. The Porches interior is awful, nothing like the Touareg which is nicer than my A6. I also looked at the BWW X5, but it was too small, and pricey once you load it up with the V8. I struggled with paying 48K for a VW, but this SUV is nearly perfect, its like driving an Audi (car). The build quality is impecible, the ride is much smoother than the Porsche and the cabin is very quiet. The safety features are great.

  • Great Car - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I think that this car is great because of its power and any SUV except for the Porche SUV doesnt compete with it.

  • After 15, Best vehicle owned! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

My wife and I each buy or lease a new vehicle every three years and after driving; BMW,SAAB,NISSAN,LEXUS,DODGE, FORD,ISUZU and HONDA, this is the best thing we have ever driven. The Design, build, fit, finish and reliability is among the best of any brand weve owned. Rock solid, a pleasure to drive and yes, we also get more comments, questions and compliments on the Touareg than on anything else we have owned because VW Managed to build something special in a world of boxes and "Me too" SUVs.

I fell in love with the Volkswagen Touareg after one test drive. Had I known the issues that were going to crop up I would have made another choice. I love the ride and handling of this SUV but Im reaching the point where that doesnt matter anymore. Ive had this truck in for service at least once a month since I bought it. Ive even had to take it in for service while on vacation. How much does that stink?! Many of the problems have been linked to the electrical system (which they know is bad and refuse to fix) but now its my transmission thats going wonky. Not only does it jerk while shifting gears, now its making a loud screaming noise. VWoA needs to get a clue and own up to the issues!

  • Poor Choice - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

After years of driving a Toyota Land Cruiser I opted for something different. Given the generally glowing reviews of this vehicle, I decided to try my first VW. Bad decision. The LC performed above expectations while this vehicle typically disappointed. Ive sold this vehicle after four months & bought a new LC (actually a Lexus LX470).
