This Year's Model Updates:

The five-passenger Touareg is an all-new midsize SUV from Volkswagen. Designed to provide both excellent handling on pavement and a high level of off-road ability, the Touareg, despite its unibody design, is a real SUV, not a soft-roader. Alongside that, buyers can look forward to beautifully furnished cabins equipped with plenty of standard convenience and safety features.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, amazingly adept off-road, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Poor fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • VW Gets an "F" in Customer Service - LEMON - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

I purchased a 04 Touareg in 12/03 for $49,365. Finally two months ago, 28,420 miles later, I’d had enough and dumped it for a $26,865 loss. During the time that I owned it, it spent 46 days in for repairs, everything from trim/buttons falling off to major problems, too many to mention… I had to make countless trips back to dealer due to parts’ unavailability. I made countless calls to VW of North America trying to get it recalled under the lemon law. VW couldnt care less and pacified me by repeatedly saying: "Well continue to service your vehicle as outlined under the terms of the Warranty." Enough was enough. I will never, ever buy a VW again. The Touareg had a nice design, it was comfy, and fun to drive, if you don’t mind 10-13 MPG and weekly trips to the dealership! I hated it.

The Volkswagen Touareg is better than the SUVs being sold by other luxury automakers, including Infiniti, Lexus, etc.

This SUV incredible. Basically, this vehicle is OVER-engineerd and UNDER-priced.

I only drive a few miles to my studio daily, but about 12 times a year I go to the Mojave Desert to do landscape photography. I find the Touareg an excellent ORV for my purposes and consider it a unique vehicle for its combination of highway manners and off-road capability. The low MPG is understandable given the vehicles weight, but could be better.

  • premature infatuation - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Me thinks I bought too quickly. After 3 previous VW purchases (over the 7 cars in my past), and a nice test drive, I thought I was making a wise purchase. After less than 3K miles, and 90 days, I am regretting this selection. V-6 does NOT have enough power - shame on VW for thinking so, and asking 5K more for a V8. Quirky and tempermental electrical system (numerous warning lights coming and going w/ no resolve from the dealer - YET). Interior trim peeling on driver door (yuck, did I buy a KIA)?! Cant sell it for what I owe- feel I have a middle of the road car at a high-end price - as I expected much more from VW and much more in a 40K car. Hope VW is listening (this may be my last VW)

  • I love my egg - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I have the V8 Egg and it has been a wonderful vehicle. I have had two minor issues thus far. A plug was missed during assembly causing water to enter the cargo area. Fixed promptly by the dealership. I also have a problem with wind noise with the sunroof open. dealer installed a deflector to correct problem.

  • Underappreciated Volkswagen - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

This has been a great truck. It has lots of curb appeal, a good ride, and handling for an SUV. It has the best interior of them all. Poor radio reception is my only gripe.

  • Best Vehicle ever Conceived - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

I have had my Touareg for 2 week and put app 2,000 miles on including a vaction trip. I am simply speechless. Its an SUV when you want it be. Its a performance sportscar when you want it to be. Its a highway cruiser when you want it to be. And all of this without compromising. I have had several dozen people wave at me (or the car) and even more stangers begging me for a test- drive. This car beats my three previous Jeep Gr. Ch. and my wifes Audi Allroad

  • Almost Bought the Porshe! - 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

I would never believe a VW could be this nice without driving it. We drove all of the models in this price range. The Benz was a true let down. The Japanese cars are too plastic and too dated looking two years later. The VW Touareg is truly amazing. I have been a Benz owner for 20 year, this reminds me of when Benz was a true high end vehicle builder.
