This Year's Model Updates:

A Turbo S model debuts, motivated by a 180-horsepower version of VW's1.8-liter turbo engine teamed with a six-speed manual gearbox. Other exclusives for the Turbo S include Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), a slightly stiffer suspension, 17-inch "Delta X" alloy wheels, revised turn signals and foglights, a front spoiler, a redesigned rear bumper with Turbo S badging and brushed alloy interior accents. Additionally, a rear spoiler will deploy from the hatch when these special Bugs reach 45 mph. Exterior paint for the S is limited to Reflex Silver, Black, Red and Platinum Gray. Later in the year, a Sport model debuts -- it's essentially a GLS 1.8T with a five-speed manual, 17-inch wheels, leather interior and a Sport badge on the deck lid. Changes for the rest of the lineup are minor: New colors such as limited-edition Snap Orange and Riviera Blue further enhance the Beetle's eye-candy appeal, and 16-inch wheels with 205/55 tires are now standard across the board. For 2002, all-new Volkswagen vehicles come standard with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. In addition, Volkswagen offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, excellent crash-test scores, affordably priced, turbo models are fun to drive, available six-speed manual and stability control with Turbo S model.
Cons:
  • Compromised rear seat/cargo capacity compared to Golf.

Ive had my Platinum Gray Turbo S for a few months now. I have never loved a car more. The 6-speed, the heated leather seats, Monsoon stereo, 17-inch wheels. Way too much fun. This is a "road trip" car. The headroom is excellent for my 64" hubby, he loves it. My first VW, traded 02 Explorer for it. VW from now on!

Third Beetle Ive owned, and all have been superb vehicles. All were bought brand new, and kept trading up. Have had this current Silver Turbo model for 8 years and have never had any serious problems with it. It is used over the last 4 years as a daily driver and between its traction in the winter and its speed/pickup in the summer, the vehicle is probably one of the best ones out there for the dollar. Maintenance is done on the vehicle per specs, and outside of a couple of door dings by jerks in parking lots, the car looks and runs as new. Probably the best value for the dollar car weve ever bought and owned.

Great vehicle. Since I no longer can afford a Porsche 911, this provides my driving fun. A superb engine and drive train.

  • Great Reliable Car - 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle

I saw all of the problems others were having and felt compelled to speak up. My experience with this car has been fantastic, a few small problems, but nothing to put the car out of service for more than a day and nothing requiring a tow. The car is fun to drive, has way more leg and head room than any other in its class, and is good on the pocket book. All these people that have problems have failed to mention the standard 4 year 50000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. The car is well designed and the company stands behind their product, not sure what else you could ask for.

I think it is a great car all around and very fun to drive. Cops never look at it because it is a beetle.

  • Wow - Its more than just a car! - 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle

This car has personality. It is a sheer delight to drive. Style, comfort, and power, it has it all and more! Handles well. Great engineering. It appears bigger on the inside than one would guess from the outside. Very safe as well. A real car for the new millennium!

  • Love my TDI - 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle

I just recently bought a 2002 TDI. It was very hard to find a diesel. After several months finding one that I wanted and was willing to trade in my Chevy "gas guzzler" Tahoe, I purchased my Beetle. Since owning it, I have done nothing but enjoy the ride and the gas price. It is nice to have a vehicle that gets great gas mileage. I just got 34 mpg in the city. I would recommend a diesel beetle to anyone. The noise is minimal and well worth it. If you really cant stand the diesel noise, which is a lot quieter than the trucks, crank up the radio.

Lots of looks, fun to drive with the turbo and ageless styling.

  • New Beetles ROCK! - 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle

Ok. So, when I first saw the New Beetle design on the market a few years back... I was first in line kvetching. It is NOTHING like the OLD Beetle. I thought it looked like a Techron car. But, it is not only cute... but a luxury vehicle in disguise. It drives smoothly... has every feature I wanted in a car... and is safe to boot.
