This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen makes the TDI and 150-horsepower 1.8T engines available on the base GL trim level. All GLs now come with power windows and cruise control, and the GL 1.8T and all GLS models get alloy wheels. Stability control (ESP), heated seats, and the Monsoon sound system will be available across the line. All models except the GL get a standard sunroof and a larger center console container, and the GL and GLS have new cloth upholstery. Note that last year's Sport model has been discontinued. All models have a more comfortable rear seat, a clock/temperature display on the rearview mirror and turn signals mounted on the outside mirrors. Finally, if you've been holding out for a Beetle convertible since 1998, your wait is almost over -- the first drop tops should arrive at the dealers just in time for, well, winter. The first ones will be 2.0 GL and GLS models in February 2003, 1.8T-equipped GLS and GLX models later in the spring.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, range of engine choices, long list of standard features, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Tight rear-seat accommodations, limited cargo room, high price of Turbo S model.

After the long wait for the Convertible Bug. You would think that they could get the top right! I mean afterall the car is approaching 30K and yes its a BUG! I purchased this car in April 03. Since then the car has been in for service 4 times. From the top jamming/breaking, to the Transmition and tiptronic failing. THis car has been a nightmare. VW service and parts is a total disaster. They dont even carry as much as a cigarette lighter that isnt on back order. It was so exciting to get this car only to be a great disappointment. you might spend more time with a service rental.. then your own vehicle.

A great car. Its my wifes main source of transportation and we have two kids. Its working out great. We just arent SUV people. Build quaility was great. Performance is impressive.

  • My second Beetle - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

Im now on my second New Beetle. Ive never had any problems with the car beyond a few minor complaints like the placement of the cup holders or the fact that the texture on the interior door handles tends to wear off. Both of mine have been the GLX trim. Plently of power and a lot of fun to drive. Ive heard of people having mechanical issues with New Beetles but I have to wonder if perhaps some of it isnt abuse.

  • Well Made, Fun to Drive, Reliable - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

2000 w/45k miles,2.0 motor, cloth interior, silver.Love it.Seats very comfortable.Steering&handling great.Feeling of quality.Love the curved window line.Has enough power, but just enough.Plenty of headroom.Only had minor problems. Switches for the window&the parking brake broke, the AC went out,&there was a minor electrical problem. All fixed under warranty quickly. The car comes with service&bumper to bumper coverage for 50,000 miles.I wouldnt worry about reliability.Think of how many old Volkswagens you see on the road.Even if you have some problems, what other car has this much style to offer.Ill take a few problems over driving an econo- box anyday.

This is by far the best car I have ever owned(my 10th). My first German car and loving it. It has plenty of room inside for my 6 foot frame and plenty more to spare. Have never had any problems, gas milage is great. Comes with features you can only find in Cadillacs, love the design, love the comfort. Excellent car!

We bought this car when a car of ours was stolen. It has been a really fun and reliable form of transportation. We are planning on keeping it in the family, since it has been so reliable. I would recommend this car and would make the same purchase again.

  • Poor Milage - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

I was told when I bought this car it would get 42/52 MPG because it is a deisel I have never even gotten 40 MPG ever! I felt ripped off! by the Dealer! They told me to write to VW, even though the salesman told me and repeatedly told me about the high MPG the best Ive ever gotten is 35 MPG city and highway, which isnt bad, but its not 42 or even 52 as promised by the salesman! I will never buy another car from this DEALER ever again! I feel ripped off every time I fill up.
