This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen makes the TDI and 150-horsepower 1.8T engines available on the base GL trim level. All GLs now come with power windows and cruise control, and the GL 1.8T and all GLS models get alloy wheels. Stability control (ESP), heated seats, and the Monsoon sound system will be available across the line. All models except the GL get a standard sunroof and a larger center console container, and the GL and GLS have new cloth upholstery. Note that last year's Sport model has been discontinued. All models have a more comfortable rear seat, a clock/temperature display on the rearview mirror and turn signals mounted on the outside mirrors. Finally, if you've been holding out for a Beetle convertible since 1998, your wait is almost over -- the first drop tops should arrive at the dealers just in time for, well, winter. The first ones will be 2.0 GL and GLS models in February 2003, 1.8T-equipped GLS and GLX models later in the spring.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, range of engine choices, long list of standard features, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Tight rear-seat accommodations, limited cargo room, high price of Turbo S model.

This car is perfect. Its sooo cute even after being on the market for like 5 or 6 years people still stop and ask me about it. This car is awesome!!!

  • Love it, but had a big problem - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

Amazing engineering and design for such a small car, lots of fun to drive. Turbo has a lot of power, but lags when starting from dead stop. I had a BMW 325is, and this car drives a lot like it. For the $, I dont think you can beat it, especially if youre looking for a four seater convertible. But.... I had a defective slave cylinder that caused the clutch to burn up after 3300 miles, and the car broke down on the NJ Turnpike. Warranty covered it, its all fixed and working great, but I have to question reliability when I break down so soon.

  • Horrible Car - Stay Away From This One!! - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

HORRIBLE CAR!!! Poor ride and handling (shakes violently above 50mph), annoying click-click-click sound when stopped, embarrassing pick-up speed, horendous gas mileage. Main reason to not buy this car is Volkswagon Credit. Sent in payment every month, every month they would cash my payment check and then call me to tell me I never paid. I would have to pay my bank to send me a copy of the check to fax to VW Credit to prove it to them. You say "simple mistake by VW, probobaly only happened once or twice" - try eight times and others have told me of similar experiences. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR - poorly designed by poor people.

  • Happy 2nd birthday to my Turbo S - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

Had the Turbo S for 2 years and havent gotten a speeding ticket yet. The mpg was what I expected, but the appointments came as a surprise. What a thrill to drive. (Wife hasnt driven it yet). The Monsoon w/ cd changer is an exceptional sound system. Quiet, stable and a real zoomer. The heated seats are great in the winter, and the AC blasts you out in the summer. The best VW Ive owned.

  • My dream car - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

I keep forgetting that those cute guys arent looking at me anymore, but the car!!! I use the car every day, and it got me through the blizzard and rain just fine. Now I am just waiting to use the best feature - skyline view, a little more often. The top goes up and down in a breeze (pardon the pun). Trunk space - there is enough for a trip to a shopping mall, but not much else. But thats what borrowing your friends SUV is for anyway.

  • Great Design, Bad Quality - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

The car looks great - inside and out, but it feels cheap. After 7k the window broke (supposedly fixed in this model year). After 10k the dash board started rattling. In General, the car does not handle or perform well. I long for my old celica.

I bought this car for my wife, and she just loves it. She likes how easy the top goes down. She says that its easy to close too. Now I like how it handles. My two girls just love it. Theyre already fighting hows going to get it.

  • tops with no top - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

Best car overall ever. fun reliable suprising roomy with the exception of the trunk which is just an extension to my pocketbook. Good pick-up great with the top down, easy to use. Poor visablility with the top up in the back left and right hand corners due to small rear window, but NO prob with top down!!!!!!! BeepBeep!

Rides beautifully, fast as a bullet, very roomy inside

  • I love my Bug! - 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle

My New Beetle has been absolutely wonderful. I have driven sports cars all my life, and I dont feel that they truly reflected who I am. They were fast, not very safe, and gas guzzlers. My new beetle however, is reliable, environmentally friendly, and very very cute.
