This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, the New Beetle is no longer available in GLX trim. There's an improved TDI engine and restyled 16- and 17-inch wheels. Turbo S models get uniquely styled 17-inch wheels as a late-year addition. New safety features include head curtain airbags and upgraded head restraints. The Monsoon audio system is now standard on the GLS and new GDL headlights are optional. Later in the model year a fixed rear spoiler will replace the power-operated unit and a CD player with MP3 capability will be added. Convertibles get new exterior colors and color combinations. All Beetles get a new fuel cap warning light this year. TDI models can be equipped with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which is a six-speed manual transmission with electronic control of the clutch and gearshifting. It can be operated in full automatic mode, like a traditional automatic, or shifted manually like a Tiptronic.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, range of engine choices, long list of standard features, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Tight rear-seat accommodations, limited cargo room, high price of Turbo S model.

When I got my VW Beetle Convertable in September, I was a little skeptikal about having to go through a "Jersey Winter" which can be pretty harsh at times. This car performed great in the snow and ice! Now that the weather is nice, you cant keep me out of my bug! I used to be jealous seeing other people in convertables, now other people can be jealous of me in my Aquarius Blue "PUNCH" Bug Convertable!!! (and its a great color!)

Surprised how fun this car is to drive. Never dreamed that I would be driving a diesel. I have a long commute and this is the perfect fit for me.

  • I finally got one! - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

I have wanted a beetle for 19 yrs and I finally have it! It was worth the wait. I love the way it handles and the ease of just dropping the top. I think everyone should have one excellent de-stressing tool. : )

Great car for the money. I was driving a suburban for the last 6 years and decided I wanted a car. NOthing tickled my fancy quite like the convertible bug! Not quite impressed with the stereo though.

Great performing car...lots of pep. We drive up alot of mountain roads and do great. Im very comfortable in it and dont feel cramped like in the old beetles. I dont agree with Edmonds review.

We just bought this car and we love it. The ride is solid and smooth. The interior feels really spacious when your inside but when you look at it from the outside it looks smaller. Optical illusions....very cool.

I LOVE this car. More smiles per mile than any car I have ever owned. Solid, well built, top quality materials and NEARLY EVERYONE gives ya a thumbs up or a smile as you go by. Young kids call out to you and pretty women give you a smile. The rear seat is only for children or small adults but head room for this 6 2" driver is great with the top in place. The top goes down easily and back up just as well and it is as tight with the top up as many sedans. The car is wonderful. It handles well on the tristy country road, but a bit harsh over expension joints on the highway. The Short wheel base makes speed bumps tough.

After getting used to the auto tiptronic transmission I love the VW New Beetle TDI. Smooth, powerful, and fuel efficient. With all the traveling I do, I fill the tank every 7=8 days and thats not a complete refill mind you. Love it...its a keeper.
