Overview & Reviews
Optional 17-inch alloy wheels can be ordered on GLS 1.8T and GLX models. Exterior mirrors are larger, high-intensity discharge headlights and a Monsoon sound system are available, and all New Beetles benefit from redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. Rain-sensing wipers and a self-dimming rearview mirror now come on GLX models.
- Cute yet classic styling, excellent crash-test scores, affordably priced, turbo model is fun to drive.
- Compromised rear seat/cargo capacity compared to Golf, could use a stiffer suspension.

Art - evokes past, foretells future - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Bicho - October 23 - 10:00 amVW seemed to solve lots of early-model assembly glitches. This 2001 virtually problem-free, compared to first problem- prone 1999 model. Mileage great - too bad diesel fuel often priced same as premium gas.

Great fun, excellent performance - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Bob Ellenson - July 28 - 9:36 pmWe recently purchased our Volkswagen Beetle GLX having previously driven a GLS for only a few months. What a world of difference! The interior is much nicer (leather, etc) and car just feels tighter. The seats are very comfortable and come with individual heaters (not that we need them much in Florida). The controls are easy to use and there is plenty of headroom and legroom (I have to scoot the seat forward and I am 62). The GLS had some trim problems (door latch, light bulbs, etc) but the GLX has none of that. Last but not least is the performance with the turbo. The car flat gets out of the hole when you want it to. Add to all that the fluorescent green color and you have one fun car.

Fast easy riding and driving Fun Bug - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By zcarid - January 30 - 11:36 amEach year the GLX has pleased us with the performance on long trips averaging 2500 miles. Cruises easily at highway speeds between 80 and 100 mph. Will go a lot faster but so will the police. Quick responsive steering and at end of long days feel like we have been treated to an easy ride. Visibility is great all around. Acceleration with the Turbo is a real safety feature in itself. Have had a few problems all easily fixed by family mechanic. Not a fan of dealer maintenance who seem to be way too expensive and eager to replace assemblies when an adjustment or a minor part is all that is needed.

So fun its crazy... - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By BugBot - December 15 - 7:16 pmThis car is so fun to drive. The turbo rocks - people expect you to putter along because youre in a bug and you leave them in the dust every time. Its incredible in bad weather. Right after I bought it, I was driving in a downpour that was so bad that people were pulling over and I didnt even need the wipers! The windshield is like an airplane and all the water just blows off, and the wide wheel base is really stable. It corners like a BMW. I love it!

At 168k, heres hoping for 200k+ miles - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By ThunderBunny - January 8 - 1:26 amThis review is for an 01 1.8T New Beetle (Auto), GLS trim with 17" rims, sports suspension, leather (heated) seating, steering wheel & shifter, and sunroof. At 50k miles, the ECU was chipped to 1 BAR. Now at 168k miles I must say my NBs been an excellent vehicle. The only items fixed under warranty were coil-packs and a MAF sensor. I replaced the Cam Chain Tensioner, 2 Oxygen/1 MAF sensors, valve cover gasket and a few hoses at 154k miles. Otherwise, everything else works! (Knock on wood!) I guess Im lucky as the NB is not rated highly for reliability. But with my other cars, I do my own maintenance/repair and follow the scheduled maintenance very closely. Hope itll go beyond 200k miles!

Love my TDI Bug! - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By zilym - April 25 - 10:00 amHad it for over a year and still LOVE my bug. Its so much fun to drive! The power steering, power brakes, cruise control, fully adjustable seats, drive by wire accelerator, and everything just makes driving it effortless. The TDI engine is great for turning heads at stop lights (noisy diesel idle in a car!), and yet quieter than a gas engine while youre cruising at highway speeds (which is great for listening to classical music). Not to mention the incredible torque the TDI has for quickly accelerating from a stop or going up hills. Fun, fun, fun!

Im sold on the Beetle - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Ellen - November 1 - 4:36 amThe Beetle has been an unbeatable vehicle for me. As a college student, I needed something reliable and relatively inexpensive. The Beetle requires little maintenance and is fuel efficient. It even has enough space to move ALL my belongings between dorms/apartments, even running well hauling a UHaul across the country to move me to my first job after graduation. My Beetle now takes me around the city during the week and into the mountains with my bike on the weekends. I cant imagine driving any other vehicle.
