Overview & Reviews
Toyota is a Japanese brand whose refined, well-designed vehicles have earned it a great deal of popularity. Toyotas also have a superb record for reliability and durability, which goes a long way toward justifying their typically high purchase prices. For buyers who plan on owning their new vehicles for a long time, the Toyota marque is a very compelling choice.
The automaker's name is a variation of the surname of its founder, Kiichiro Toyoda. After years of research, Toyoda unveiled his first prototype, the A1, in 1935, marking the birth of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The '40s witnessed the launch of additional passenger cars and even a pickup. By the end of the decade, the automaker had produced more than 100,000 vehicles.
Toyota grew bigger in the '50s and expanded its roster with a slew of new small cars. The company also unveiled the utilitarian BJ truck; this vehicle was the precursor to the Land Cruiser. By the end of the decade, Toyota had commenced exports to the U.S. with the establishment of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. The first Toyota to be sold on American shores was the Crown; it held the distinction of being the first Japanese car to be sold Stateside.
The '60s witnessed even more growth for the emerging juggernaut. Toyota introduced the Corolla, an immensely popular model that is still in production today. Vehicles like the home-market Publica, the 2000GT, Hiace and Miniace were also launched. The decade closed with Toyota reporting annual domestic sales of 1 million units; cumulative exports also reached 1 million.
Japanese-market cars like the Carina, Light Ace and Publica Starlet were launched during the 1970s. In the States, the Corolla grew in popularity and the Corona and Mk II models debuted as well. The successful Celica sports coupe was also rolled out and would remain in production for more than 30 years. Toyota's shadow had spread far beyond Japan by this point. The decade's oil crisis had made the manufacturer's compact, fuel-efficient models more popular than ever in the United States. By the time the '70s drew to a close, the automaker had exported more than 10 million vehicles.
Toyota expanded its presence in the U.S. market during the '80s, with the introduction of popular models like the 4Runner SUV and the MR2 sports car. The true high point of these years, though, was the birth of the Toyota Camry sedan. Originally known as the Celica Camry in Japan, the car went on to be a hit of phenomenal proportions, earning kudos as America's best-selling car of the year time and time again.
During the '90s, Toyota rolled out the Avalon full-size sedan and expanded its selection of SUVs with the compact RAV4. By the end of the decade, more than 100 million Toyota vehicles had been produced in Japan. The company also proved itself on the cutting edge of new technology with the rollout of the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid. The car debuted in Japan in 1997; by 2001, the fuel-sipping sedan had made its way to American highways. Despite the presence of a growing number of competitors in its segment, the Prius continues to boast class-leading sales.
Toyota's current lineup is relatively extensive, including minivans, cars, trucks and SUVs. The brand remains extremely popular among savvy consumers who place a high value on quality and dependability.

So far, so good! - 2010 Toyota Tacoma
By CBinSantaCruz - July 20 - 6:40 pmI purchased a 2WD 4 cyl 4 speed auto Toyota Tacoma in June of 2010. Ive had this car for three months and have driven 7000 miles. I have two purposes for this truck. One is a daily commuter driving about 50 miles a day. The other is as my weekend warrior toy carrier mostly for car camping. As a commuter it works great. I get about 22 mpg in traffic going up a 4k ft mountain and back down the other side. As a weekend toy carrier it also performs well. I frequently drive on dirt roads and even with the 2wd it has performed well. I did get stuck in some sand once which made me want the 4wd. But I dont feel the extra money the 4wd costs is worth it for the type of driving I do.

Its a keeper - 2008 Toyota Tacoma
By 2mtech - July 20 - 2:53 pmAll around solid, dependable truck. Daily driver, 75 highway miles/day. Average 20-22 MPG. Traded an 03 Dodge Dakota for it, and what a difference. Not all good, sadly. As some have said here, the brakes are horrible and Toyota should be ashamed of them. The peppy 4.0L V6 makes the 3.9 in the Dakota seem like a 4 cylinder however, with excellent torque and high end power. Ride is good... its a truck, after all. Much more comfortable than the Dodge, and I love the dash/control layout. Once I wear out the atrocious stock Dunlop tires and replace with something decent handling will be great.

New 2017 Toyota Camry LE - 2017 Toyota Camry
By Stephanie - July 20 - 2:13 pmI owned a 2005 Toyota Camry LE. It was so reliable that my kids called it OLD FAITHFUL. Basicly it was maintenance free. I only did oil change, tire and battery change on it in the past 11.5 years. If it wasnt due to an accident that required expensive body work, I definately will keep it running. In comparison, the new 2017 Toyota LE did not change that much. Things I like better: back cemera, modern body shape, touch screen, roomy glove compartment with a lock, USB plug. Things I dont like: insulation is not good, wind sound louder; body construction feels not as solid as 2005 model, big gaps at all outside metal pieces; the car still moves a little without parking brake on when you switch to park (giving you scary feelings). Overall, it is a great car.

Best of the Compacts!!! - 2011 Toyota Corolla
By wheeler007 - July 19 - 4:14 amI recently purchased this car after conducting extensive research on it and test driving several of its competitors including the Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, and Volkswagen Jetta. Despite some nice features and futuristic design elements found on the other models particularly the Hyundai Elantra, I eventually opted for the Corolla S based on its smooth quiet ride, spacious interior, excellent reliability history, attractive exterior, and top-notch safety ratings. After owning the Corolla for a few weeks now, I couldnt be happier with my decision.

Great Basic Car - 2009 Toyota Corolla
By Pete Chapman - July 18 - 10:20 pmGreat car. Dont understand the steering problem with some people. At 80 miles per hour on the interstate car runs smoothly, very quiet and stays in line.

The best of its class - 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser
By Alex - July 18 - 7:56 amDespite the issues we have with our truck, it is the best track in its class as far as exterior design, power and the way it drives - there is no other vehicle that I could compare LC200 to; The issues we had/have are the drive shaft that had to be replaced because it was factory or design defect (even this particular vehicle was built in Japan). Secondly, I already replaced the belt: around 20,000 miles it started making a noise; thirdly every other time I lift this truck to rotate tires (I like to do a simple maintenance myself), after I need to take it to the dealer to recalibrate suspension as it starts lining to the right. Other than that its perfect!

Questioning Toyotas Reliability Reputation - 2011 Toyota Sienna
By az29okg - July 18 - 7:27 amI purchased the van new and it now has about 106,300 km. This van is now about 4.5 years old and in the last 7 month, Ive had the following problems; (1) air conditioner compress had to be replaced, (2) starter motor failed, (3) Driver power seat failed. Other than these problems, I really enjoyed driving this van.
