Make Overview:

Toyota is a Japanese brand whose refined, well-designed vehicles have earned it a great deal of popularity. Toyotas also have a superb record for reliability and durability, which goes a long way toward justifying their typically high purchase prices. For buyers who plan on owning their new vehicles for a long time, the Toyota marque is a very compelling choice.

The automaker's name is a variation of the surname of its founder, Kiichiro Toyoda. After years of research, Toyoda unveiled his first prototype, the A1, in 1935, marking the birth of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The '40s witnessed the launch of additional passenger cars and even a pickup. By the end of the decade, the automaker had produced more than 100,000 vehicles.

Toyota grew bigger in the '50s and expanded its roster with a slew of new small cars. The company also unveiled the utilitarian BJ truck; this vehicle was the precursor to the Land Cruiser. By the end of the decade, Toyota had commenced exports to the U.S. with the establishment of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. The first Toyota to be sold on American shores was the Crown; it held the distinction of being the first Japanese car to be sold Stateside.

The '60s witnessed even more growth for the emerging juggernaut. Toyota introduced the Corolla, an immensely popular model that is still in production today. Vehicles like the home-market Publica, the 2000GT, Hiace and Miniace were also launched. The decade closed with Toyota reporting annual domestic sales of 1 million units; cumulative exports also reached 1 million.

Japanese-market cars like the Carina, Light Ace and Publica Starlet were launched during the 1970s. In the States, the Corolla grew in popularity and the Corona and Mk II models debuted as well. The successful Celica sports coupe was also rolled out and would remain in production for more than 30 years. Toyota's shadow had spread far beyond Japan by this point. The decade's oil crisis had made the manufacturer's compact, fuel-efficient models more popular than ever in the United States. By the time the '70s drew to a close, the automaker had exported more than 10 million vehicles.

Toyota expanded its presence in the U.S. market during the '80s, with the introduction of popular models like the 4Runner SUV and the MR2 sports car. The true high point of these years, though, was the birth of the Toyota Camry sedan. Originally known as the Celica Camry in Japan, the car went on to be a hit of phenomenal proportions, earning kudos as America's best-selling car of the year time and time again.

During the '90s, Toyota rolled out the Avalon full-size sedan and expanded its selection of SUVs with the compact RAV4. By the end of the decade, more than 100 million Toyota vehicles had been produced in Japan. The company also proved itself on the cutting edge of new technology with the rollout of the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid. The car debuted in Japan in 1997; by 2001, the fuel-sipping sedan had made its way to American highways. Despite the presence of a growing number of competitors in its segment, the Prius continues to boast class-leading sales.

Toyota's current lineup is relatively extensive, including minivans, cars, trucks and SUVs. The brand remains extremely popular among savvy consumers who place a high value on quality and dependability.

  • Better Than Advertised - 2005 Toyota Prius
    By -

The Prius has been even better than expected. It has the gas mileage but it also has a great ride, better than the Civic, which I love. It is extremely comfortable and very roomy. The quality and innovations make this car a lot of fun to drive. The space age display that informs you of your immediate miles per gallon etc. brings out the competitive spirit in you to achieve even greater accomplishments in fuel ecconomy. This leads to safer driving etc. The car would be excellent without the gas mileage benefit. You certainly have enough pep when you need it. Reports indicate the gas mileage is less than the EPA numbers. However, so far Im getting 56 total mile per gallon.

  • Best SUV ever!!! - 2008 Toyota RAV4
    By -

We just bought our 1st SUV, and we are loving it! We bought it in white, Sport, 4X4. The RAV4 rides smooths on 18" alloys, and despite having great power, it is still a gas sipper. Our kids are loving it, too. With a high wheel base, and 4X4, I am looking forward to the snow. Love my snow white RAV4!

  • Redefined the old and set the standard - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I have owned both the Nissan and Toyota crew cab pickups in 4wd with automatic. I moved from the Nissan to the Toyota for power and left the Toyota for comfort but I have returned and I am not disappointed. The redisgned fixed the ride comfort (ride and seat). The interior looks classy and is very functional. I have put 590 miles so far and got 18.3mpg on my first tank with mixed driving. The more I drive the 2005 Tacoma 4wd the better I like it. Ride, handling, quality and attention to the "little things" make this the best midsize truck on the market - hands down.

  • MR2 - 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder
    By -

The MR2 has stopped my "must have a new car every 2yr itch!" It handles well, is excellent on gas and looks fabulous. Very limited cargo and passenger space will not limit the amount of time you will want to drive your Spyder, its never enough. If you want to have a least one person a day stop and ask "what kind of car is that?!", this is the car for you! With all that said, dont buy one because current owners enjoy the uniqueness of the MR2 Spyder!

  • Celi - 2000 Toyota Celica

  • Love at first sight - 2002 Toyota Camry Solara
    By -

I bought this car in March 2003. I love the way it looks, and drives. Great for highway driving.

  • 2003 avalon xls - 2003 Toyota Avalon
    By -

Test drive before you shop Lexus ES300 or Infiniti I35 sedan. Very Quiet and roomy, good acceleration, feels like a Lexus inside. Exterior Styling bland but functional. A Japanese Buick, with higher quality than its American counterpart. Low maintenance and insurance rates.

  • A very satisfied camry owner - 2000 Toyota Camry
    By -

I have owned a camry for about 4 years now. Its the most reliable, quiet, smoothe to handle car I have ever owned. The standard music system is also a pleasure to listen. Trunk is spacious, back seats are comfortable, folding the seats makes even more trunk space.

  • Great Car! - 2004 Toyota Corolla
    By -

Want to buy a CE with ABS, but dealer told me that CE is without ABS in our regions. Go for the LE. Not regret! Comfortable, quiet, affordable and stylish.

  • Very Happy! - 2003 Toyota Corolla
    By -

Did a lot of research for my first car and the new style Corolla won! I ended up being the winner in the end though. Only problems have been with some interior things... My friends cant drive it because theyre too tall (seat doesnt back up enough); I broke off a compartment door on the center panel within the first month - dealer replaced with no problems though. I added cruise control after market - its not the prettiest thing sticking out my steering wheel but it works!
