Overview & Reviews
Toyota is a Japanese brand whose refined, well-designed vehicles have earned it a great deal of popularity. Toyotas also have a superb record for reliability and durability, which goes a long way toward justifying their typically high purchase prices. For buyers who plan on owning their new vehicles for a long time, the Toyota marque is a very compelling choice.
The automaker's name is a variation of the surname of its founder, Kiichiro Toyoda. After years of research, Toyoda unveiled his first prototype, the A1, in 1935, marking the birth of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The '40s witnessed the launch of additional passenger cars and even a pickup. By the end of the decade, the automaker had produced more than 100,000 vehicles.
Toyota grew bigger in the '50s and expanded its roster with a slew of new small cars. The company also unveiled the utilitarian BJ truck; this vehicle was the precursor to the Land Cruiser. By the end of the decade, Toyota had commenced exports to the U.S. with the establishment of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. The first Toyota to be sold on American shores was the Crown; it held the distinction of being the first Japanese car to be sold Stateside.
The '60s witnessed even more growth for the emerging juggernaut. Toyota introduced the Corolla, an immensely popular model that is still in production today. Vehicles like the home-market Publica, the 2000GT, Hiace and Miniace were also launched. The decade closed with Toyota reporting annual domestic sales of 1 million units; cumulative exports also reached 1 million.
Japanese-market cars like the Carina, Light Ace and Publica Starlet were launched during the 1970s. In the States, the Corolla grew in popularity and the Corona and Mk II models debuted as well. The successful Celica sports coupe was also rolled out and would remain in production for more than 30 years. Toyota's shadow had spread far beyond Japan by this point. The decade's oil crisis had made the manufacturer's compact, fuel-efficient models more popular than ever in the United States. By the time the '70s drew to a close, the automaker had exported more than 10 million vehicles.
Toyota expanded its presence in the U.S. market during the '80s, with the introduction of popular models like the 4Runner SUV and the MR2 sports car. The true high point of these years, though, was the birth of the Toyota Camry sedan. Originally known as the Celica Camry in Japan, the car went on to be a hit of phenomenal proportions, earning kudos as America's best-selling car of the year time and time again.
During the '90s, Toyota rolled out the Avalon full-size sedan and expanded its selection of SUVs with the compact RAV4. By the end of the decade, more than 100 million Toyota vehicles had been produced in Japan. The company also proved itself on the cutting edge of new technology with the rollout of the Prius, the world's first mass-produced hybrid. The car debuted in Japan in 1997; by 2001, the fuel-sipping sedan had made its way to American highways. Despite the presence of a growing number of competitors in its segment, the Prius continues to boast class-leading sales.
Toyota's current lineup is relatively extensive, including minivans, cars, trucks and SUVs. The brand remains extremely popular among savvy consumers who place a high value on quality and dependability.

My kind of car for a family of 6 - 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser
By Heide - October 18 - 2:00 amLand Cruiser is the car everyone should own.It is fun to drive in the city or in the rocky roads of Joshua Tree National Park to the Snowy mountains of Big Bear. It handles the raod very well. We compared it to the Sequoia and other SUV`s there is just not any comparison. Yes, one has to pay for the safety and quality and if you have 4 precious little ones in it it is well worth every dollar. I am a proud, confident driver and owner of my Land Cruiser.

S-Runner Tacoma - 2003 Toyota Tacoma
By S-RunnerPete - October 18 - 2:00 amThe S-Runner is a truck that is difficult to acquire. It took me almost a year to finally get mine. Speaking with other S-Runner owners on- line, theyve had similar experiences. This truck is a real blast to drive, with its 190 horsepower 24 valve V-6. Front and rear sway bars, Tekico gas shocks, and 5-spead transmission, make this truck a "real sleeper". Fuel mileage isnt bad for all the performance one gets in this S-Runner package. I personally have gotten 26 mpg on a trip. The reliability is typical Toyota, and thats a good thing. I am very happy with this truck.

2004 Highlander - Fun To Drive - 2004 Toyota Highlander
By ssdepetris - October 18 - 2:00 amFor an SUV, the 2004 Toyota Highlander turned out to be an eye-opening experience. Fun to drive, comfortable, not at all like a truck. The new 3rd seat, while small, is hidden away until needed for two more kids (no adults need apply for this seat). The Highlander turns on a dime and, in fact, has a tighter turning circle than my new Maxima. In short, the amazing thing about the Highlander is that it handles like a Camry but carries people and cargo like a mid-size SUV.

What a great van - 2004 Toyota Sienna
By KatMay - October 18 - 2:00 amWeve had a 97 Windstar for 5 yrs now and have been pleased with that, but after looking at the new Freestar vs. the new Sienna....it was no comparison. Ive also driven the Honda minivan (my sister owns one) and I just couldnt stand the way it drove. The Sienna is family friendly. I have 4 children and they range in size from 59" teenager boys to almost 4 1st grader and they all are comfortable in all the seats of the passenger areas. Love the tri zone heat/air. Im always cold and my husband is always hot. We got the leather, DVD player (dealer threw in 2 more headsets for us), moonroof, spoiler, running boards....all cool options

Great Van - Keep an Eye on the Tires - 2006 Toyota Sienna
By Kid and Car x 2 - October 17 - 2:50 pmI love everything about it. AWD works great in the snow, we live in the mountains so having to replace the tires every 12,000 is something I am used to. Just bought a donut spare to throw in the back on long trips. The kids love it, the wife loves it, and I am happy to get at least 18 MPG. Better than the 11 MPG I got with an Expedition. Highly recommended. Just keep an eye on the tire pressure with the run flats. No biggie. Everyone should keep track of this stuff anyway. The gauges light up fantastic at night. Very satisfied.

Good Workhorse - 2006 Toyota Matrix
By Jordan - October 17 - 1:50 pmHave had this car for one month. Love it. Im a mobile computer service tech, its great for my job. Ive put 4k miles. Previous owner drove it 28k mi/yr (now has 84k mi on it). Drives/ looks new. Stores and accesses tools/equip. easily. I like the independent window and door hatches in back. Very roomy. Slept in back area seats folded down. 110volt power is handy for laptop. I just happen to have front ABS brakes with upgraded Toyota TRD pads and rotors (slotted and drilled). EXCELLENT STOPPING POWER!!! I live in CA and its saved me multiple times. My 97 accord did not stop like this. Also, if you want, this car can tow a 1,500lb. trailer, but havent tried it. Might be kinda slow.

3rd Camry, 1st New one! - 2005 Toyota Camry
By Melinda - October 17 - 1:13 pmI am totally pleased with the performance of this, my 3rd Camry. Its very smooth, very quiet, no squeeks. Has more than enough power entering freeways. Visibility is great, though I always add those little square mirrors on both side mirrors, on every car I have for extra safety. The car handles very well, Its simple to drive with intuitive controls. The premium sound CD player is very good. Im not in love with the looks of it, I DO know how dependable these cars tend to be, and I DO love that! My husband wanted a 6cyl. 4 would have done it for me. Ive had both. 1/3 less mpg. with the 6cyl. 4rs are good and safe, peppy enough. These days it matters more mpg = $$$.
