This Year's Model Updates:

New for 2006, the hybrid version of the Highlander pairs a gasoline-powered V6 with electric motors to improve fuel economy and acceleration.

Pros:
  • Real-world gas mileage in the 20s, terrific acceleration, smooth ride, comfortable cabin with simple controls and solid materials.
Cons:
  • Extra weight results in so-so handling, engine can be noisy, poor access to third-row seat.

  • So far so good - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Fun to drive, great pick up and is not as tippy as other SUVs. I can carry lots of kids and gear in a car that gets nearly 27 mpg (still not the epa 31 though) and Im emitting less carbon. Liked how it has "smart" air bags for passenger side. For a limited edition, it lacks amenities: seat warmers have only one temp; cooling system has only one zone vs. driver/passenger dual temp zone; sun visors seem plasticy; lack of AC outlets in 2nd row; doors dont auto lock. Also, the third row is really meant for small kids. Although I am glad it doesnt scream enviro-weenie, wish there was more "green" signage on car to help lessen the stares from non-SUV drivers - perhaps a small window decal?

My wife commutes to work in it daily and aveages 35 MPG per tank in combines city/hwy use. Plenty of room to pack all of out sailing gear fro a weekend, or even week long cruise on our boat. Very comfortable for extended trips of six to eight hours or so driving. We love it.

  • Lives up to expectations - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The best car that we have ever had. It has been fun to drive. Great acceleration at all speeds. Mileage has been steadily going up. The air conditioning greatly reduces mileage. We are now getting about 29mpg around town with air off. We are averaging about 27 overall. The highlander is a great road car (great acceleration, quiet and comfortable). Excellent controls and navigation with mileage screen is great. It teaches you how to get better mileage. Electric air conditioner is very powerful and cools the car down quickly.

  • Great SUV - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

I have been extremely pleased with my purchase. The vehicle accelerates wonderfully. I have been averaging 25- 26 mpg (mostly highway and AC on 100%). Which is a great thing since gas prices are hitting close to $3. I do wish it had power locks. The Nav package is very nice.

This car wasnt great. It is one of the first hybrid models out there and we bought this car new and it has about 50K on it now. Weve had some pricey problems with it though. At times it wont start and have had many recalls on it for steering! And if you spill even a little bit of water youll short out all the electronics in the car!!!! That was over $7500!!!! The car does drive pretty nice and does have a lot of power though. And I was in an accident in it and the engine did shift but luckily not onto us. I personally dont think it was that safe. The car is okay but not worth the money.

My husband and I traded in our Sequoia because we were impressed with information Toyota put out about the Highlander Hybrid. Toyota advertised the Hybrid as getting 33mpg city and 28mpg highway (much better than our Sequoia). We have owned this car for 4+months and are getting nowhere near what Toyota has advertised. We are dissatisfied with the gas mileage and the fact that there are no air vents in the back. Therefore when our kids sit in the back seats on a hot day, they nearly suffocate. We are very dissatisfied with our purchase and hold the Toyota Company completely at fault for false advertisement. We own 3 Toyota vehicles and have been very happy up until this purchase.

Overall this unit has it all (within reason). It drives nice and is very comfortable for the long hauls. Mileage so far as been impressive and it is extremely quiet. So far it has been a very positive purchase.

  • A Step In The Right Direction - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This is my second Highlander in a row and my first Hybrid. I LOVE IT! Sure, its not perfect, but kudos to Toyota for giving us an alternative to the gas guzzling SUV. Mileage at 10,000 km is apx. 28 hwy and 25 city (hilly). On the flats, mileage is closer to 30 mpg combined. So, its not perfect yet, but already I calculate Ive used over 600 litres (160 gallons) less than with my previous Highlander. The vehicle is a bit heavier and handling is not quite as sharp as the 01 but its comfortable and the acceleration is fantastic. This vehicle gets you thinking the right way about fuel consumption. Highly recommended to those who care.

  • Everything - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Ive wanted an AWD car that can pull my boat but be a hybrid. Finally it arrived and my expectations have been exceeded. Such comfort, quiet, smoothness, and luxury were not expected and definitely welcome. My other car is a 2003 Forester XS, and it seems like a different era compared to the Highlander.

  • Perfect Solution for a greeny w/ 3 kids! - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

We just had our 3rd child and this has been perfect for us! I was dreading getting a bigger vehicle but Ive fallen in love with this car! Such a smooth ride and we can fit an infant car seat, a 7 year old in a booster seat and a 9 year old all in the second row, but if they want more room one of the older kids can sit in the 3rd row! With the third row up its hard to fit other things in the back, but if we wanted more room we would have gotten a mini van! Its fun watching the gas mileage and I love when the engine shuts off because weve slowed down or stopped. Love how it charges the battery going down hill! I love the look of it. It would be nice if it was a little higher off the ground.
